Western Michigan University, 1999 This investigation explored the underlying constructs of Clarke’s Educational Affirmations, a set of 54 statements designed to support the development of healthy self-esteem and the accomplishment of the developmental tasks of the psychosocial stages theorized by Erikson. The Preliminary Educational Affirmations Scale (PEAS), a transformed version of the Educational Affirmations, was devised and administered to 520 community college students. A principal components factor analysis of the results indicates the presence of two main factors that accounted for 28% of the total variance in the data, and offers partial support for the hypothesized factors of worthiness (Being) and competence (Doing). The scientific literature concerning affirmations, the technique of using intentional positive thoughts or statements to bring about or reinforce change in oneself or others, was reviewed and discussed, and suggestions for further research on affirmations in general, and Educational Affirmations in particular, were offered. • Sobriety Or Recovery?
Sobriety or Recovery? By Jean Kirkpatrick, Ph.D., WFS Founder This year the WFS “New Life” Program is 20 years old. That's so hard for me to believe. However, during those 20 years, many women have recovered; have gone on to fulfilling lives. Drinking -- sobriety . Problems of gender -- recovery To have a fulfilling life requires 2 stages. The first stage is to overcome drinking. This is a period of sobriety. It is possible to stop at this stage but it does not produce a fulfilling life. Just being sober has little back up when something drastic happens. The immediate response is to go back to drinking because there is no solid basis for the sobriety. Probably the sobriety is a day-by-day management of life. The sobriety is tenuous. It can be upset by troubling news. Its maintenance is always a sometimes thing. And what of the “New Life” Program? Maintaining sobriety is merely practicing the First Statement. Going beyond the First Statement, going beyond just the maintenance of sobriety, is the beginning of your pursuit of a full recovery. The “New Life” Program differs from many others because it is a comprehensive program; it asks its users to make a total change in life to affect a recovery. It asks for a new way of thinking about life and a way of unlocking the key to individual strengths. When I laid out the program 20 years ago, I saw it as Thirteen Statements of Recovery, with each Statement dealing with one aspect of recovery. In the early years, when I was making speeches, I began to layout a life plan; to illustrate, I’d discuss the different levels of recovery as I saw them.

  • Psychiana: a 20Th Century Revitalization Movement?
LAMBDA ALPHA JOURNAL PAGE 39 PSYCHIANA: A 20TH CENTURY REVITALIZATION MOVEMENT? M. Lynne Thompson Department of Anthropology Wichita State University - Alpha of Kansas During the first half of the 20th century, a new and unusual religion called Psychiana reached millions of people around the world. Its founder claimed to be a prophet who talked with God. With no churches and minimal organization, Psy- chiana was said to be the world’s seventh largest religion. Unlike any other before or since, this religion was almost entirely conducted through mail order – with a money-back guarantee. One might well ask why, if this religion was so popular and influential, is there little knowledge of its existence. One also may wonder why and how it found such a widespread audience. Finally, the question must be asked how other religions with similar messages succeeded and still survive while Pyschiana virtu- ally vanished less than 25 years after its inception. From an anthropological perspective, Psychiana and its founder, Frank B. Robinson, bear many of the marks of a revitalization movement and the charis- matic personality who leads one. This paper will examine and compare the char- acteristics of Psychiana, from its inception to its demise, with the typology of re- vitalization movements provided by Anthony F.C. Wallace. It will include infor- mation from Robinson’s personal manuscript collection (now housed at the Uni- versity of Idaho and compiled by Judith Nielsen), as well as excerpts from a book by Charles S. Braden, professor of History and Literature of Religions at North- western University, who personally interviewed Robinson.

Please do not distribute it without authorization. Preface. t frequently has been said that presentations of the New Thought are Imade in terms not readily intelligible to beginners. In the nature of the case, it is not easy to set forth a psychological and idealistic system so that it shall be lucid to all. It is also true that there is a decided though often unconscious inclination among the exponents of any movement to fall into a mannerism which is distinctive. Writers upon the New Thought are no exception to this rule. In this volume, the author does not claim to be exempt from such a tendency, but simplicity is his earnest aim. It is hoped that many who heretofore have been prevented from a careful investigation of the New Thought may be able to grasp much of its inner spirit and substance through an attentive perusal of these pages. A plain rehearsal of the foundation principles is followed by some comments upon their relation to other systems. An appendix is added containing a few suggestive lessons in the most practical and experimental form.

This has been expressed through the secularization thesis, which describes a “disenchantment” of western culture. Over the last ten years, however, there has been a growing movement seeking to re-enchant this culture by exploring and reconsidering religion, myth and spirituality. One of the most powerful expressions of this is popularly referred to as the New Age Movement.
