  • THE HISTORY of SPEEDWAY in EDINBURGH : Part 3 the Provincial League Years
THE HISTORY OF SPEEDWAY IN EDINBURGH : Part 3 The Provincial League Years 1964: CHAMPIONSHIP CHALLENGE WRECKED BY INJURIES 1964 was the year the Provincial League went "black", following demands for reorganisation of the sport by the National League bosses which the PL felt were unreasonable. They decided to go their own way and there was a complete split for a year. From a spectator's viewpoint it made little difference other than the loss of the usual World Championship round (Pl men no longer being eligible). It also meant the calling-up of some new and untried referees, though they seemed no better or worse than the previous lot. Ex-Tiger Tommy Miller was amongst the new group. The team contained no surprises, and as usual they took time to find their feet. Even though Clive Featherby didn't arrive Sheffield won the opening Northern League match in spite of a Doug Templeton maximum. The first three away matches in the competition were all lost, and this included the first match against the re-born Glasgow Tigers for a decade. The Tigers had a top-heavy team and were thrashed 56-21 at Old Meadowbank, full maximums were scored by George Hunter, Wayne Briggs and Doug Templeton. Finally the away win bogey (they hadn't won since 1962) was cracked with two-in-row, a challenge at Middlesbrough, and a 47-30 triumph at Sunderland, and in both these matches Doug Templeton and George Hunter scored full maximums. They were matching each other point- for-point and giving a great lead, but after backing from Wayne Briggs and Willie Templeton the tail was as poor as ever.

The Speedway Researcher Promoting Research into the History of Speedway and Dirt Track Racing Volume 14 No.4 March 2012 Edition No.56 Yet another Volume End Well, the earth has spun round the sun once more and it is time to look forward to another Volume of the magazine. Yet again we have thought about the future and we have agreed we can continue on run with Volume 15. Yet again we put out a call for articles which allows us to share information of interest to we speedway historians. There is a massive range of topics out there and there is no restriction on the era you can write about. The subscription for Volume 15 will be £5 yet again so not cost of living busting rise to add to inflationary pressures (whatever that means.) We are still in the black and there is no need to bump up prices to our loyal band of subscribers. The renewal slip is included with this edition and we look forward to hearing from you yet again. Graham and Jim Wartime Speedway at Belle Vue Barry Stephenson lives nearnWorkington but is a great fan of Belle Vue with an equally great interest in the history of the Manchester team. Barry has penned the following article. As a keen programme collector of Belle Vue and Workington memorabilia I hoped someday to be able to collect all the wartime Belle Vue programmes. There were 168 Belle Vue programmes issued between 23 September 1939 and the end of the 1945 season encompassing 174 meetings.

  • 1965 Pub.Xlsx
Season 1965 Version 1.22 Notes – season files The full season files we have compiled have been collated from Speedway Publications, magazines, books and programmes. These files list the heat details of every (known) UK official meeting raced during that particular season and also attempt to correct the many errors that have been published in the Speedway press and various publications for that season. The points scorers in the official league and KO Cup fixtures should (in the vast majority of cases) correspond with the official averages published at the end of the season, together with any fixture(s) where the result was amended following an appeal to the SCB. We tried to remove as many errors as possible and of course some will remain. The authors will be delighted to hear of any “genuine” mistakes and/or any missing information such as race times, christian names, etc. Steve Wilkes/Gary Done E-mail: [email protected] Coventry v Cradley Heath Saturday 27th March 1965 (British League) coventry 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 pts bpts tpts 1. • The Only New Signings for the Season Were New Zealanders Bill Andrew Who Returned After a Year’S Absence and Goog Allan
1964 The only new signings for the season were New Zealanders Bill Andrew who returned after a year’s absence and Goog Allan. Ivan Crozier and Bob Duckworth both returned to that country. On the closure of the Sunderland track Ken Sharples was signed. This signing gave the side the extra strength they needed to win the league title. In the meeting at Exeter on 31 August objects from the crowd were thrown at Ivan Mauger after he had defeated Jimmy Squibb in the Silver Sash. Mauger dived into the crowd and threw punches at all and sundry. In the eighth heat of the same meeting Russ Dent’s machine threw him on to the terraces with bits of engine striking and injuring a seventeen-year old Exeter fan. On 26 September Ivan Mauger won the Provincial League Riders’ Championship at Belle Vue with thirteen points after winning a run-off for the title. In qualifying he had won the qualifying rounds at Long Eaton on 4 August, Middlesbrough on 6 August and Poole on 26 August, all with fifteen-point maximums. He also won the Semi-Final at Edinburgh on 12 September scoring thirteen points. Peter Kelly also rode in the final and scored twelve points to finish fourth after he lost a run-off for third position to Roy Trigg. In qualifying he had scored a fifteen point maximum to win the round at Newcastle on 10 August. Ken Sharples and Bill Andrew were also qualifiers for the final at Belle Vue scoring nine and eight points respectively.
