1 July 2008 Top to Toe: Fashion for Kids New exhibition at V&A Museum of Childhood relives 300 years of fashion for children 4 October 2008 - 19 April 2009 This autumn, the V&A Museum of Childhood will present a major exhibition exploring the history of children’s fashion, reliving iconic and defining moments from the past 300 years of children's clothing, vintage fashions, rare objects and photography. Top to Toe: Fashion for Kids will profile the changing attitudes, themes and fads of one of fashion’s most intriguing and enduring demographics, and promises to provide nostalgic moments for all generations. Visitors may recall evocative brands like Ladybird and Clothkits, or encounter classic memories from their own wardrobes such as parkas, knitted woollen swimsuits, leg warmers and ponchos. The Museum holds one of the most significant collections of children’s clothing in the world with over 6,000 outstanding items ranging from the 1700s to the present day, over 100 of which will be featured in the exhibition. Other objects, including a group of paintings depicting historical outfits from the V&A’s main collections, will complement the clothing on display. The exhibition will demonstrate how children’s clothing has changed over time, covering four broad themes: Milestones, Changing Fashions, Fashion Drivers and Practical Fashions. It will consider how materials, colours, shapes and styles have developed but will also show how many classic garments have remained unchanged or have been revived, due to practical design or enduring appeal. -

Some Remarks on Urartian Horse Harnesses Manuel Castelluccia and Roberto Dan 1. Introduction1 There is no doubt that metalwork production is the most distinguished aspect of Urartian art. This circumstance was certainly favoured by the presence in Urartian territory of rich deposits of metal ores (generally lacking in Mesopotamia), as well as important trade routes running from the Iranian plateau and the Cauca- sus. Ambition regarding the direct ownership and exploitation of these mineral deposits was certainly one of the main reasons for the conflict between Assyria and Urartu. The purpose of this study is to analyse the series of metal objects which can be considered components of horse harnesses. Items belonging to war-chariots are not included, since they will be the subject of a further specific study. This article —after a series of detailed studies— is devoted to a general review of Urartian metalwork production.2 The kingdom of Urartu expanded greatly in a rather brief period, between the 9th and 7th centuries BC. Notwithstanding this limited chronological span, the amount of metal artifacts ascribed to the Urartian culture is far larger than any other cultural sphere of the Ancient Near East, except probably the well-known and much discussed corpus of the “Luristan Bronzes”. Numerous studies have been devoted over the years to metalwork production and its artistic features; today this constitutes the most developed field of Urartian studies.3 Despite the richness of this specific literature, several problems still limit our understanding of Urartian metalwork production. These problems mainly depend on the lack of a sufficient number of well doc- umented excavation reports regarding Urartian sites. -

One of the goals was also to examine the current status of equestrian tourism in Finland, as well as the use of the Finn- horse in equestrian tourism services. Improvement suggestions were created based on research about Irish equestrian tourism as well as the Irish Draught Horse and the Irish Sport Horse. There was no commissioner for the thesis. The topic arose from personal interest in equestrian tourism and the growing importance of the Finnhorse as part of the industry. The first part of the thesis comprises the theoretical background. It includes different aspects of eques- trian tourism in Finland and in Ireland. The current status of equestrian tourism in Finland and the safety guidelines created by the Finnish Consumer Agency are discussed in detail. The history, current status, and different usages of the Finnhorse are discussed. Also the Irish Draught Horse and the Irish Sport Horse as Irish horse breeds are elaborated. The second part is the empirical part. It gives suggestions for improving equestrian tourism in Finland and increasing the use of the Finnhorse in tourism related services. The suggestions are based on strat- egies and actions implemented by different organizations in Ireland. -

Historic Southern Indiana Interpretation Workshop, March 2-4, 1998 Historic Costuming Presented By Jill Harrison IMPRESSIONS Each of us makes an impression before ever saying a word. We size up visitors all the time, anticipating behavior from their age, clothing, and demeanor. What do they think of interpreters, disguised as we are in the threads of another time? While stressing the importance of historically accurate costuming (outfits) and accoutrements for first- person interpreters, there are many reasons compromises are made - perhaps a tight budget or lack of skilled construction personnel. Items such as shoes and eyeglasses are usually a sticking point when assembling a truly accurate outfit. It has been suggested that when visitors spot inaccurate details, interpreter credibility is downgraded and visitors launch into a frame of mind to find other inaccuracies. This may be true of visitors who are historical reenactors, buffs, or other interpreters. Most visitors, though, lack the heightened awareness to recognize the difference between authentic period detailing and the less-than-perfect substitutions. But everyone will notice a wristwatch, sunglasses, or tennis shoes. We have a responsibility to the public not to misrepresent the past; otherwise we are not preserving history but instead creating our own fiction and calling it the truth. Realistically, the appearance of the interpreter, our information base, our techniques, and our environment all affect the first-person experience. Historically accurate costuming perfection is laudable and reinforces academic credence. The minute details can be a springboard to important educational concepts; but the outfit is not the linchpin on which successful interpretation hangs. -

Meet Jan Dobson of Foggy Valley Farms Hi: My name is Jan Dobson. I am proud to be the ICAA Representative for District 2 which includes Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Delaware, and Maryland. My husband Stan and I own Foggy Valley Farms located in the beautiful rolling hills about 60 miles East of Nashville, Tennessee. Stan and I are native Tennesseans who went to high school together and married on February 12, 1965. It’s hard to believe we will be married 50 years in February, 2015. A good portion of those 50 years we have spent loving and raising not only our children but also Appaloosa Horses. Stan grew up on a dairy farm and soon after we married we bought our first farm. One day at a local sale we purchased a chestnut roan - sparse mane and tail Appaloosa mare. Her name was Belle and she became the best all-round family horse ever. Stan could work cows with her; we could go for trail rides, take her to the local Saddle Club on Saturday nights and win at barrel racing and western pleasure. Our kids learned to ride on Belle and refused to have a pony - they wanted to ride “Daddy’s horse”. We decided that if this was what Appaloosas were like then, of course, we wanted more of them. Later we were able to purchase a great Appaloosa Stallion named Cajun’s Vantes. Cajun came from the country music star Jimmy C. Newman’s program and he was the beginning of our registered Appaloosas. -

There is more traffic going much faster than ever before and we must do what we can to assure our own safety as well as that of motorists with whom we must share the road. We’ve created a horse and buggy driver safety manual to assist in this effort. Proper operation of your horse and buggy on these busy roads can greatly reduce crashes. The manual is intended for horse and buggy drivers operating on public roadways. However, this manual can also be useful for motor vehicle drivers, especially out-of-town visitors and tourists, not familiar with encountering horse and buggies traveling on the road. RULES FOR JUDGING A. GENERAL To rein a horse is not only to guide him, but also to control his every movement. The best reined horse should be willingly guided or controlled with little or no apparent re- sistance and dictated to completely. Any movement on his own must be considered a lack of control. All deviations from the exact written pattern must be considered a lack of/or temporary loss of control and therefore a fault that must be marked down according to severity of deviation. RULES FOR JUDGING RULES After deducting all faults, set here within, against execution of the pattern and the horse’s overall performance, credit should be given for smoothness, finesse, attitude, quickness and authority of performing various maneuvers, while using controlled speed which raises the difficulty level and makes him more exciting and pleasing to watch to an audience. The official guideline for the application for the rules for judging shall be as specified in the NRHA Judges Guide. B. SCORING (1) The scoring will be on a basis of zero (0) to Infinity, with seventy (70) denoting an average performance. The individual 1 maneuvers are scored in one-half ( ⁄2) point increments from 1 a low of -1½ (one and one-half to a high of +1 ⁄2 (one and one-half) with a score of zero (0) denoting a maneuver that is correct with no degree of difficulty. Scores will be announced after each horse works. (2) TIES All ties for 1st place will be worked off if the tied exhibitors agree to participate in a run-off.
