Ron Day …. Material needed for Symposium Tools and blanks Normal turning tools (partng tool, 3/8 or ½ bowl gouge, round nose scraper, skew, etc.) Four jaw chuck with worm screw (ok if they don’t have the worm screw)

Wood blanks: 6” to 8” in diameter (or Square) by 3” to 4” thick. I will plan to have enough blanks for all partcipants to have two blanks. If they want to bring their own blanks, that is fne; however, no exotc and avoid black walnut and cedar (folks maybe allergic).

Trent Bosch …. Material needed for Symposium Hands on informaton Green/wet hollow form blanks, 5- 6" in diameter, 6-7" long end grain, preferably without the pith but we can work with it if they are small diameter trees each person will want to bring 1 piece maybe 2. The following is from Alice Berning and was writen by her late husband Norbert Berning. Alice is will- ing to share this with all and wants to express her Thankfulness for all the support she has received during the passing of Norbert.

KUDOS TO THE DWT MEMBERS FROM NORBERT BERNING A small or large number of members do not of itself a meaningful, efcient, or productve organizaton make. Generally, a club or similar organizaton is designed to primarily beneft its members, and then, by ex- tension, some elements in the community. But before the “extension” benefts can be realized, the internal content and process of the club must be well defned and efectvely implemented. The following is a brief assessment of the internal workings of the Dakota Woodturners club………… Afer several years of swimming in the D.W.T. acculturaton atmosphere some refectons seem to be in order regardless of whether they appear shallow, trivial, or on target to whomever. Being primarily a non-turner member might qualify one to see the structure and functon from the “botom- up.” Per- haps that provides for a basic substance and appreciaton commentary rather than a view, ofen of the supercilious kind, from the “top- down.” So, generally, the following is one person’s bias----“refectons in the dust from the back of the herd:”---- Our club merits applause in its totality. It is not organized specifcally for one level of competency. Membership is open to those with the highest quality of turning to anyone who has not the vaguest idea about the functon of lathing. No member, regardless of how deeply he/she is in the shadow of turning knowledge or competency is embarrassed, ridiculed, or despised by the afcionados of turning. The willingness and readiness of the veterans of the lathe are unreserved in assistng fellow members whose need of help is small or great. Pragmatcally, provision is made to beneft members’ growth in turning in all related circumstances. There are no “politcal divisions” or sub-divisions of favorite or non-favorite “sons” on our membership roster. Unselfsh sharing appears to be the medallion feature of our members.

And so the list can go on ------Dakota Woodturners

Our treasurer, Mark Kielpinski, approaches life with enthusiasm. His present feelings regarding Dakota Woodturners are “I absolutely love the group and turning!” Some years ago, when he was a 6th grade math teacher, his involvement with the North Dakota Coun- cil of Teachers of Mathematcs demonstrated that same enthusi- asm. Mark presently is Mandan School’s “Technology Training Co- ordinator-Assistve Technology Specialist”. Mark has been turning for 2 ½ years. His hobby is producing wood- en puzzles of which he has produced hundreds (probably thou- sands). Mark likes turning any species of wood, as long as it fts on his lathe. He has yet to decide what is his favorite object to turn. Mark’s love of wood has rubbed of on his family. His wife Nancy and eldest daughter Rebecca are showing a lot of interest in turning. His other two children are Jessica and Bryan.

A special THANKS to each member of the Dakota

Woodturner Club for the sharing, caring, teaching and willingness to help and pitch in, no mater what the cause! Whether a long term member or

When making the fnal cut or sanding the inside or outside botom of a bowl or plater we ofen have difculty getng a smooth , even contour. With the lathe stopped, a method that I found to work, and have more success is to “feel” the uneven surface or contour, is by closing my eyes, and turning of my imagina- ton. In other words only let only your sense of touch feel the surface. This seems to take the “visual” sense of the or color of the wood out of the picture which can ofen deceive what we are feeling. When a high is felt, (high spots are easier to fx), stop moving your fnger and mark the high place with a pencil. This is the locaton that needs atenton with the lathe tool or . How many tmes have we heard from members, “I’ve learned so much since I joined the club.?” Steve Hamar feels this as well. Although Steve has done woodworking since high school, it was only a few years ago that he started woodturning. Woodturning caught his atenton through friends Alan and Dolly Erickson. Steve bought his wood lathe afer seeing one of the DWT demonstratons at Acme Tools.

Steve works in the area he loves. He is the longest practcing surgeon in the Bismarck area. He has cut back to half tme, however. That is 45 to 50 hours a week. In comparing medical practce with woodturning, he says that both have developed safer equipment, but it is our ability to pay atenton to and take care in what we’re doing that really helps keep us from injury.

When asked which woods he prefers to work with, he said all kinds. His favorite turned items are bowls and platers.

Steve’s family consists of wife Donna, seven children, and thirteen grandchildren with one more on the way. His ninth grade grandson has already turned a bat. Steve will have to nourish that interest. He leaves us with the quote, “Isn’t life grand!”. SAWDUST & SHAVINGS Issue 201 Page 5

This month we feature enthusiastc father and son members. Both Neal and Ben Nie- muth joined the club about two years ago. Like some of us, Neal had his frst experience with tuning quite some tme ago. Family and job became priorites, and there wasn’t tme for turning. Ten years ago Neal and Ben saw the DWT demonstraton in the mall where the interest was rekindled. Ben received a top that was turned while they watched.

Neal works for the US Fish and Wildlife Service. His work consists of feld surveys and data analysis. His early career was in teaching high school English and wild life pro- grams. Ben is in junior high.

Ben and Neal share their favorite wood. They both like walnut. For objects to turn, Ben likes mushrooms, and Neal prefers bowls. They both credit the club with their improvement in turning skills.

Family, huntng, fshing, biking, and woodworking take up Neal’s extra tme. Ben likes to draw, turn, play video games, cook, and read. Since the family has one dog, one cat, two horses, and eleven chickens, Ben also spends tme taking care of animals.

Their family consists of Neal, wife Leanne, and Ben.

They stll have that top which was turned for them years ago. SAWDUST & SHAVINGS Issue 202 Page 5

Editor’s note:

Regarding the Freedom Pen project; There are currently 40 pens that have been donated to this worthwhile club project. The goal was established at he beginning to donate a modest quantity of 100 pens. To date, only 40% of this goal has been achieved. I don’t believe the troops care about how “fancy” the pens are, I believe what will speak to them is that there is a group of very fine people who have thought of them in a small measure by taking the time to turn a pen and give it away. The current deadline is that Dolly and Alan will have all pens by the Decem- ber 2014 club meeting. Thanks for all of your efforts. Larry N.

Monthly Member Profile

While atending a DWT symposium several years ago , Jason Geigle said that he was blown away by the talent and the quality of the projects. Since he loved woodworking, it was nat- ural that he wanted to learn a new craf.

For the last 15 years Jason has worked as a project manager for a commercial roofng com- pany. Before college he was a welder for two years. His welding experience has contnued as one of his hobbies. Others are metal working, drafing, woodworking, and watching col- lege football.

When it comes to woodturning, he says he’s new to the craf but is learning more with eve- ry meetng. His tme turning is limited due to the fact that his garage is full of building mate- rials used in working on his house. He is looking forward to clearing out his garage as work on his house progresses. Jason needs a clean garage so that he can turn. That is something our members can relate to.

Cherry, Walnut, Ebony, and Maple are Jason’s favorite woods. He likes to turn segmented bowls, vessels, and ring box- es.

Jason must have found tme and room to do some turning because he has turned several ring boxes. He explained that he used these to become engaged recently. We all congratulate Jason and his fancée. SAWDUST & SHAVINGS Issue 203 Page 5
