  • Michael Jackson: Was He the Man in the Mirror?
Brunner 18.07.13 02:03 Journal of Integrated Studies, Vol 4, No 1 (2013) Michael Jackson: Was He the Man in the Mirror? Stephanie Brunner Stephanie Brunner will complete her MA of Integrated Studies through Athabasca University this winter. Her interests include mental health, particularly the social constructs of mental illness and, more particularly, the separation of mind/body. Abstract Michael Jackson did not like his reflection in the mirror. He was obsessed with it, changing it many times in an effort to love his image. In analyzing Michael Jackson’s responses given in various interviews regarding his appearance and personal history, it becomes increasingly evident the impact childhood trauma and loneliness has on mental well-being. It emerged that Michael Jackson should have been diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and that had the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, a diagnostic tool used by the medical profession, been more clear as to the importance of etiology, and the diagnostic features more concise and encompassing rather than fuzzy and overlapping, Michael Jackson may have been effectively diagnosed and treated, avoiding becoming the man in the mirror. Keywords: NPD, narcissism, celebrity, Michael Jackson, childhood trauma “The repression of childhood pain influences not only the life of an individual but also the taboos of the whole society.” Alice Miller Imagine looking out into a crowd and having your idealized self reflected back at you. Michael Jackson spent most of his life transforming himself to mirror his idealized reflection; he morphed into something that was unlike his appearance as a child, seemingly assimilating a Peter Pan-like world into his reality – even naming his estate Neverland Ranch.

Foreword At times, I ask the man in the mirror a question: “Do you remember when the course of your (my) life was decided?” * * * When I was a child, I just followed the path my parents had set for me, like many people do. While some people might only follow that early path, I suppose the majority must follow intently the other path that they later choose for themselves. At least in my case, this was true. Then, I wonder, when did I choose this path for my life? * * * There was definitely a big sign. Yeah ... I remember it well. A sign that can change the path of your life often turns out to be an encounter with a particular person. Of course, an encounter with a book can also change your life. * * * A moving reading experience is similar to an encounter with that special person. Introduction: The Mystery of a Gift To the south of Lake Michigan lies Gary, Indiana. Smoke rising from the chimneys of steel mills clouds the vision of this city, which has the highest African American population in the United States.

  • Unmistakable Mo- Ment When Michael Jackson Entered the American Mind As an Embodied Possb Bility of Not Just Our Pleasures but Also Our Ideals
perPormers michae mm Jackson Bv [moreMikal HERE WAS ONE unmistakable mo- ment when Michael Jackson entered the American mind as an embodied possb bility of not just our pleasures but also our ideals. ammmaam hat moment came in early 1983. Jackson’s music was al ready in the air by that time - in fact, it was transforming the air. Everywhere you turned, you would hear an ani mating sound. It began with taut, maddened, funk-infused guitar lines that scrambled against the upsweeping curve of a string section in a heady depiction of emotional panic. Then a high-end, sensually imploring voice entered the fray and imposed elegance and resolution upon the panic: “What do you mean?” the singer moaned breathtakingly. “I the Who will dance on the floor in the round.” The song was Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” and it had suddenly, surely become one of the most ubiquitous - and excit ing - breakthrough singles in recent pop history. Whenever a song becomes as madly popular as “Billie Jean,” it can be fun to examine the rea sons why: Was it simply the appeal of the music’s exacting but impelling sound? The fine phrasing and tremulous emotion at play against each oth er in the singer’s voice? The allure of the artist’s personality or celebrity? In the case of “Billie Jean,” it was a bit of all those things. Clearly, since a string of brilliant childhood triumphs with the Jackson 5, Jackson - who was twenty-five in 1983 - had long been one of soul and rock’s most stir ring singers.

  • Tableaux Main Character
TABLEAUX MAIN CHARACTER Michael Jackson A living presence in the show through video, whispers, laughter, urging, spoken and projected narrative, screaming, silhouettes, elemental forces, etc. Michael’s spirit is guiding the performers and the audience on the journey, culminating with the release from the grip of Mephisto, which leads everyone to reconnect with Michael’s spirit and his child-like heart. Michael is also represented through certain of his visual iconography – his iconic glove, hat, shoes and glasses – which are transformed into talismans meant to represent certain qualities possessed by Michael. He is the primary protagonist, our Guide. And through his music, lyrics and words, he is also our narrator. TABLEAUX The Vortex – Inspired by the first four verses of Beat It The four misfits who are referred to as the Heroes – Clumsy (slackliner), Shy (martial artist), Smarty Pants (juggler), and Sneaky (manipulation specialist) – get sucked into a Vortex after sneaking into the show. Time Tripping – Beat It Time goes crazy as we cross the metaphoric threshold into a magical world inspired by Michael’s imagination. High above the audience, rotating bungees churn to the funk- infused, drum and guitar-driven rhythms of Beat It. Hide & Seek – Leave Me Alone/Tabloid Junkie/Too Bad Mephisto, a malevolent machine made of radios, microphones, tungsten bulbs, televisions, cameras, and surveillance equipment, makes his first appearance along with the Tabloid Junkies, his dance corps and guards. Lost and Alone – Stranger in Moscow This scene is the Spanish web lament to loneliness of the Beggar Boy, a character in the song “Stranger in Moscow”, while Ngame, the Mother Moon character, watches over.
