3 TraditionalSong l3-9 Traditional Song Week realizes a dream of a comprehensive program completely devoted to traditional styles of singing. Unlike programs where singing takes a back seat to the instrumentalists, it is the entire focus of this week, which aims to help restore the power of songs within the larger traditional music scene. Here, finally, is a place where you can develop and grow in confidence about your singing, and have lots of fun with other folks devoted to their own song journeys. Come gather with us to explore various traditional song genres under the guidance of experienced, top-notch instructors. When singers gather together, magical moments are bound to happen! For Traditional Song Week’s ninth year and our celebration of The Swannanoa Gathering’s 25th Anniversary, we are proud to present a gathering of highly influential singers and musicians who have remained devoted over the years to preserving and promoting traditional song. Tuesday evening will be our big Hoedown for a Traditional Country, Honk-Tonk, Western Swing Song and Dance Night. Imagine singing to a house band of Josh Goforth, Robin and Linda Williams and Ranger Doug or Tim May, Tim O’Brien, and Mark Weems! So, bring your boots and hats, your voices and instruments, and get ready to bring on the fun! Our Community Gathering Time each day just after lunch affords us the opportunity to experience together, as one group, diverse topics concerning our shared love of traditional song. VOICES IN THE HALL: SAM BUSH (PART 1) EPISODE TRANSCRIPT PETER COOPER Welcome to Voices in the Hall, presented by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. I’m Peter Cooper. Today’s guest is a pioneer of New-grass music, Sam Bush. SAM BUSH When I first started playing, my dad had these fiddle albums. And I loved to listen to them. And then realized that one of the things I liked about them was the sound of the fiddle and the mandolin playing in unison together. And that’s when it occurred to me that I was trying on the mandolin to note it like a fiddle player notes. Then I discovered Bluegrass and the great players like Bill Monroe of course. You can specifically trace Bluegrass music to the origins. That it was started by Bill Monroe after he and his brother had a duet of mandolin and guitar for so many years, the Monroe Brothers. And then when he started his band, we're just fortunate that he was from the state of Kentucky, the Bluegrass State. And that's why they called them The Bluegrass Boys. And lo and behold we got Bluegrass music out of it. That song was a prime influence on Garth Brooks, who later recorded it. Now, New Grass Revival’s founding member, Sam Bush, is a mandolin revolutionary whose virtuosity and broad- minded approach to music has changed a bunch of things for the better. -

Red Allen & Frank Wakefield WDON Recordings 1963is a collection of 22 tracks featuring Red Allan on guitar and vocals, Frank Wakefield on mandolin and vocals, Pete Kuykendall on banjo and vocals and Tom Morgan on bass and vocals. The liner notes tell the story... Red Allen, Frank Wakefield, Pete Kuykendall and Tom Morgan. These names epitomize all that is meaningful in the world of bluegrass music. The pedigrees of Harley "Red" Allen and Franklin Delano Wakefield have been well documented. Red is justly regarded as the quintessential bluegrass singer. Raw, emotive, tender when necessary; he ranks as one of the most powerful singers this music has produced. Frank Wakefield remains the true preserver of Bill Monroe's definitive understanding of how bluegrass mandolin ought to be played and has furthered his unequalled knowledge of the Monroe doctrine with an enriched vocabulary of Baroque and Classical explorations. But what has not been fully documented were the significant contributions of band mates Pete Kuykendall and Tom Morgan. Collectively. this outstanding ensemble contributed some ofthe most lasting and memorable testaments within the bluegrass idiom. Theirs was a music of passion and conviction. The availability of only one commercial recording of this band has now been addressed and serves to illuminate the prominence of these gifted performers. In 1963, Red, Frank. Pete and Tom gathered in Mr. Kuykendall's Falls Church, Virginia home studio for what turned out to be a successful relationship with radio station WDON - 1540 AM in Wheaton, Maryland. -

Bluegrass Music Association of Maine Winter 2020 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF BLUEGRASS BOOKS ABOUT BLUEGRASS MUSIC by Stan Keach I can think of three reasons why writing a short article covering books about bluegrass music might be a good idea for the winter newsletter: 1. There’s just not much current “news” about bluegrass music — not here in Maine, and not anywhere. Bands are mostly pretty inactive; there are no jams. 2. Some people have more time to read than usual, because there are no live concerts right now, no festivals, no jams. And, though I think a lot of bluegrass fans don’t realize this, there are many excellent books available about our fa- vorite subject. 3. If we can get this edition of The Bluegrass Express out early enough, it may spur a few Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs on the Grand Ole Opry, Dec. 8, 1945 people to buy a book or 2 for their favorite blue- grass music fans for a holiday gift. WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly pay tribute to those icons of Tennessee bluegrass music who have earned the admiration and respect of both their audiences and their fellow musical artists; and WHEREAS, Clyde Bradley Nokes is most assuredly one such bluegrass icon, who is loved and respected in his community, not only for his musical talent, but also for his random acts of kindness to help those in need; and WHEREAS, born at his parents' home on December 13, 1928, Clyde Nokes is the second of four children born to Shelah and Gertrude Nokes, who were sharecroppers in the Gassaway community; and WHEREAS, Mr. Nokes grew up farming and selling produce on the side of the road, before he and his father opened a general store in the Sycamore community; and WHEREAS, his father bought Clyde his first guitar, a Stella from Sears and Roebuck that arrived by mail in a cardboard box, when he was six, and the Roberson sisters taught him his first guitar chords; and WHEREAS, before long Mr. Nokes started playing at the general store and pie suppers, and when his brother, Rayburn, began playing banjo, they formed the Nokes Brothers' Band along with David Watts; and WHEREAS, Clyde Nokes then married a Short Mountain girl, Maxine Hale, and they had four sons, Gerry, Nick, Bill, and Jeff, each of whom learned to play an instrument by the time he reached his teens; and HJR0587 011544 -1- WHEREAS, Mr. -
