Clark Frazier presented a visual tour of the electric suburban Key System Transbay lines from San Francisco (connecting to the surviving Municipal Railway streetcar lines) to Oakland and Berkeley from 1956 to 1958, and then the freight-only electrified Sacramento Northern during the same time period. Most of these slides were from a Winterail show in California in 2002, but we got to see additional slides after the Winterail slides.. We started with a map of the Key System, which was a privately owned company formed from consolidating several streetcar systems and a realty company (Realty Syndicate of Francis "Borax" Smith and Frank C. Havens, which built and ran such properties as the Claremont Hotel which survives today as Claremont Resort), and then taken over by National City Lines in 1948. Before seeing the Key System itself, we saw some photos of the Bridge Terminal area, including Bridge Terminal itself (eventually named Transbay Terminal, and finally closed in 2010 for replacement with a new facility), which was the San Francisco terminal of the Key System and for a short period also the Southern Pacific (by way of its subsidiary East Bay Electric) and the Sacramento Northern, and then some modern photos of some of the San Francisco Municipal Railway's heritage streetcars running on the Market Street (Muni F) line, followed by some views of Muni streetcar service from the time period we would see covered for the Key System: 1956 to 1958. -

Next Meeting E‐Update: October 23, 2014 In‐person: November 20, 2014 at 6:00pm Memorandum Date: September 25, 2014 To: CalMod Local Policy Maker Group (LPMG) From: Marian Lee, CalMod Executive Officer Re: Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) Procurement Process _________________________________________________ At the August JPB meeting, CalMod staff provided an update on the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) procurement process and shared information learned from the Request for Information (RFI) meetings, which were completed in June. The LPMG will receive a similar presentation, which is attached. The RFI is a critical step in the procurement process and provides up-to-date information about the EMU industry. With this information, staff can begin to more clearly understand the availability of “off-the-shelf” EMUs that can be best utilized for electrified Caltrain service. There are two phases of public outreach related to the design of the EMUs. The first phase, which kicked-off at the August Board meeting, involves soliciting input on key structural and capacity elements such as bathrooms, seats and standees, and bike capacity. Public feedback during the Phase I outreach will be coupled with technical analysis to inform staff recommendations to the Board for the EMU Request for Proposal, scheduled to be released in early 2015. -

The in a modern world. Stab-Lok products are no longer manufactured, but millions had been installed in residential and commercial buildings between 1950 and 1985. The purpose of the breaker is to protect the building from fire in the event of an electrical circuit abnormality. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) investigated many reports in 1982 of Stab-Lok breakers failing to trip as required by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) testing standards. The CPSC did not have the funding to further investigate this problem or arrive at a definitive conclusion. Tests by the CPSC and independent consulting engineers concluded that certain Stab-Lok breakers do not trip according to UL requirements and in some cases, can jam in the “on” position. In addition, overheating problems have been found within the panelboard internal bus connections. Unfortunately, this information surfaced after many Stab-Lokinstallations were completed and had been in service for years. In 2002, a New Jersey class-action lawsuit decided that the manufacturer of the Stab-Lok breakers committed fraud over many years in issuing UL labels to products they knew did not meet the UL testing requirements. Unless proper erosion prevention and sediment control Best Management Practices (BMP’s) are used for construction activities, silt transport to a local waterbody is likely. Excessive silt causes adverse impacts due to biological alterations, reduced passage in rivers and streams, higher drinking water treatment costs for removing the sediment, and the alteration of water’s physical/chemical properties, resulting in degradation of its quality. This degradation process is known as “siltation”. Silt is one of the most frequently cited pollutants in Tennessee waterways. The division has experimented with multiple ways to determine if a stream, river, or reservoir is impaired due to silt.
