[St.] Raymond Pettibon[E] : 1978 - 1986 June 16 - September 26, 2008 specific object / david platzker presents [St.] Raymond Pettibon[e] : 1978 - 1986 June 16 - September 26, 2008 Specific Object / David Platzker is pleased to announce the opening of [St.] Raymond Pettibon[e] : 1978 - 1986. The exhibition will be on view at Specific Object from June 16 though September 26, 2008. Between the years 1978 and 1986 Raymond Pettibon [a.k.a. Raymond Pettibone; St. Pettibone; Chuck Higby; Ray Dylan; Raymond Ginn] produced an aggressive trove of graphic works for the seminal Southern California punk band Black Flag as well as for Red Cross, The Minutemen, Nig Heist, and others. Published predominately by SST Records -- which was founded by Pettibon's brother and Black Flag guitarist, Greg Ginn -- the exhibition features over two hundred gig flyers, artists' books, album covers, posters, T-shirts, stickers, skateboard decks, and the first five editioned prints by Pettibon. "The flyers were one of the best things about working with SST," recalls the lanky Pettibon at his Redondo Beach studio. "It's more of a general audience when it goes on a telephone pole. It's not something that you can buy in a store or see on TV. You see it at a glance and you can't switch it off." And make no mistake -- some of Pettibon's pen-and-ink drawings are strong enough to make you reach for the off button: Themes include castration, dismemberment, suicide, murder. Working in a style reminiscent of religious tract handouts, Pettibon shows one-shot images of disturbed pockets of humanity that are at times humorous, violent and macabre: A panel with a pair of men fighting with knives is headed with the caption "Your girlfriend called me chicken." A skeleton standing on a stage tells an audience, "Life is a joke" with a caption underneath that says, "This is the punch line." "(My drawings) are violent," Pettibon, 24, admits. "And that's dictated by the medium, in that I just use one frame. You can't tell a whole story with all kinds of exposition. It's like taking one frame out of a movie or one crucial scene out of a book at a critical point. You can't really be subtle." -- from "Black Flag Cover is Pure Pettibon," by Jeff Spurrier, Los Angeles Times, July 1, 1984 Many of the images for the gig flyers were drawn from the pages of the 47 artists' books by Pettibon that were published by SST. In addition to flyers for Black Flag's gigs, Pettibon's artwork graces flyers for bands such as Angst, specific object / david platzker 601 west 26 street room m285・new york, ny・10001 1 212.242.6253・www.specificobject.com Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Descendents, D.O.A., Fear, Flipper, Germs, Go-Go's, Hüsker Dü, Meat Puppets, Minutemen, Ramones, Redd Kross, Saccharine Trust, Stains, Subhumans, Throbbing Gristle, TSOL, Wasted Youth, Youth Gone Mad and others. Pettibon is also credited with both conceiving the band's name -- a riff on the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath and the legendary Black Flag insecticide -- as well as designing Black Flag's iconic four black bar "flag" logo. Post 1986 Pettibon was commissioned to produce covers for the Sonic Youth, Foo Fighters and various bands that have included Pettibon himself as a musician such as Blank, Super Session, and Sür Drone. Beginning with Raymond Pettibon's first artists' book "Captive Chains," published in 1978, the exhibition contains a myriad body of explicit, graphic, sexual and violent material not suitable for children or those faint of mind. The show concludes with the announcement card for Pettibon's first New York City one-man exhibition held at the Semaphone Gallery in March 1986, on which the text reads: "I am the wrench in people's lives, really fixing them up." In addition to the artworks, the exhibition documents the eight year period with newspaper clippings; additional ephemera; books that provide context by rock historian Joe Carducci [Rock and the Pop Narcotic : Testament for the Electronic Church], and Black Flag's vocalist, Henry Rollins [Get in the Van : On the Road with Black Flag]; as well as books about Raymond Pettibon himself. Pettibon's cult-like following began soon after the appearance of his earliest album covers, artists' books, and flyers. Specific Object's exhibition reflects this history and proves Jeff Spurrier's and Pettibon's predictions from twenty-four years ago: ... There are already a number of "serious" Pettibon collectors, and it's inevitable that when punk is history, the art of Raymond Pettibon will be considered an essential chapter. "It'll happen like it did in the '60s with the psychedelic posters," he predicts. "Once these kids start growing up and making money it'll be a way of recapturing their past. But at that point the art becomes dead. It's just artifacts." -- from "Black Flag Cover is Pure Pettibon," by Jeff Spurrier, Los Angeles Times, July 1, 1984 Specific Object is located at 601 West 26th Street / Floor 2M / Room M285, New York, New York 10001. • SST Defies Industry, Defines New Music
Page 1 The San Diego Union-Tribune October 1, 1995 Sunday SST Defies Industry, Defines New Music By Daniel de Vise KNIGHT-RIDDER NEWSPAPERS DATELINE: LOS ALAMITOS, CALIF. Ten years ago, when SST Records spun at the creative center of rock music, founder Greg Ginn was living with six other people in a one-room rehearsal studio. SST music was whipping like a sonic cyclone through every college campus in the country. SST bands criss-crossed the nation, luring young people away from arenas and corporate rock like no other force since the dawn of punk. But Greg Ginn had no shower and no car. He lived on a few thousand dollars a year, and relied on public transportation. "The reality is not only different, it's extremely, shockingly different than what people imagine," Ginn said. "We basically had one place where we rehearsed and lived and worked." SST, based in the Los Angeles suburb of Los Alamitos, is the quintessential in- dependent record label. For 17 years it has existed squarely outside the corporate rock industry, releasing music and spoken-word performances by artists who are not much interested in making money. When an SST band grows restless for earnings or for broader success, it simply leaves the label. Founded in 1978 in Hermosa Beach, Calif., SST Records has arguably produced more great rock bands than any other label of its era. Black Flag, fast, loud and socially aware, was probably the world's first hardcore punk band. Sonic Youth, a blend of white noise and pop, is a contender for best alternative-rock band ever.

  • California Noise: Tinkering with Hardcore and Heavy Metal in Southern California Steve Waksman
ABSTRACT Tinkering has long figured prominently in the history of the electric guitar. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, two guitarists based in the burgeoning Southern California hard rock scene adapted technological tinkering to their musical endeavors. Edward Van Halen, lead guitarist for Van Halen, became the most celebrated rock guitar virtuoso of the 1980s, but was just as noted amongst guitar aficionados for his tinkering with the electric guitar, designing his own instruments out of the remains of guitars that he had dismembered in his own workshop. Greg Ginn, guitarist for Black Flag, ran his own amateur radio supply shop before forming the band, and named his noted independent record label, SST, after the solid state transistors that he used in his own tinkering. This paper explores the ways in which music-based tinkering played a part in the construction of virtuosity around the figure of Van Halen, and the definition of artistic ‘independence’ for the more confrontational Black Flag. It further posits that tinkering in popular music cuts across musical genres, and joins music to broader cultural currents around technology, such as technological enthusiasm, the do-it-yourself (DIY) ethos, and the use of technology for the purposes of fortifying masculinity. Keywords do-it-yourself, electric guitar, masculinity, popular music, technology, sound California Noise: Tinkering with Hardcore and Heavy Metal in Southern California Steve Waksman Tinkering has long been a part of the history of the electric guitar. Indeed, much of the work of electric guitar design, from refinements in body shape to alterations in electronics, could be loosely classified as tinkering.

  • Album of the Week: Descendents’ Hypercaffium
Album Of The Week: Descendents’ Hypercaffium Spazzinate In this crazy year we need punk rock more than ever. We need to listen to some amplified, angst-filled, guitar-driven music that ignites the rambunctiousness in all of us. Seems like the perfect time for the Descendents to put out their first album in 12 years, right? The punk legends from Manhattan Beach, California, have their seventh album, Hypercaffium Spazzinate, out and the fearsome foursome have gone back to what they do best. That’s unleashing feverish riffs, pristine drumming and lyrics that come straight from the heart. The title is an ode to frontman Milo Aukerman’s former career as a research biochemist while the album itself harks back to the Descendents’ earlier material in tone and style. When the band’s previous album Cool To Be You came out in 2004, polished pop punk was all over the place. Being a band that are considered to be pioneers of pop punk (which I find to be weird), the Descendents went with the times with Cool To Be You and put out a clean sounding album. Hypercaffium Spazzinate brings back the band’s edge that they had in the ’80s. The album’s production quality has a little bit of grit and that’s what a punk band should sound like. Pop punk is a bit of an oxymoron in my opinion. Punk started out as a genre that counteracted what pop music was in the ’70s and then punk bands started bringing melody. That’s what makes it pop? Maybe that’s why we have crappy bands like All Time Low and The Maine corrupting the youth, though that’s not the Descendents’ fault.

MUSIC FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MASSES: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY, THE RECORDING INDUSTRY, AND PUNK ROCK IN THE COLD WAR by MINDY CLEGG Under the Direction of ALEX SAYF CUMMINGS, PhD ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the connections between US foreign policy initiatives, the global expansion of the American recording industry, and the rise of punk in the 1970s and 1980s. The material support of the US government contributed to the globalization of the recording industry and functioned as a facet American-style consumerism. As American culture spread, so did questions about the Cold War and consumerism. As young people began to question the Cold War order they still consumed American mass culture as a way of rebelling against the establishment. But corporations complicit in the Cold War produced this mass culture. Punks embraced cultural rebellion like hippies.

Generic Flipper Gone Fishin' Live Target Video 1980-81 DVD Blow'N Chunks Live Public Flipper Limited Live 1980-1985 Sex Bomb Baby! American Grafishy Flipper were one of the leading punk rock bands over in San Francisco in the early- to mid-80s, giving a big "frig you" to the rest of the punker scene by playing a louder SLOWER mess of the blues that relied wholly on attitude and bass line. See, the guitarist just played a bunch of scraggly noise. So the drummer would play his little rhythm and if they weren't too doped up, one of the two bass players (Will Shatter or Bruce Lose) would try to keep in time enough to play a catchy four-note bass line for you to tap your toe to. Then the OTHER of the two bassists (whichever one wasn't playing bass at the time) would yell some words that would seem nihilistic but would also occasionally make a statement about how important it is to rise above all the garbage that life throws at you and SURVIVE. They also had a great sense of humor (sample lyric: "Who cares anyway/who it is or what I say?/This song rhymes/And we play it in time!). Unfortunately drug habits have "dogged" the band since day one, resulting in one premature death and one immature reunion. Great ass band though, giving us more catchy bass lines than any band since The Tarney Spencer Group or whatever that band was that did that Run For Your Life album that my dad used to have.
