Premier League, 2018–2019 “The Premier League is one of the most difficult in the world. There's five, six, or seven clubs that can be the champions. Only one can win, and all the others are disappointed and live in the middle of disaster.” —Jurgen Klopp Hello Delegates! My name is Matthew McDermut and I will be directing the Premier League during WUMUNS 2018. I grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey, a town not far from New York City. I am currently in my junior year at Washington University, where I am studying psychology within the pre-med track. This is my third year involved in Model UN at college and my first time directing. Ever since I was a kid I have been a huge soccer fan; I’ve often dreamed of coaching a real Premier League team someday. I cannot wait to see how this committee plays out. In this committee, each of you will be taking the helm of an English Football team at the beginning of the 2018-2019 season. Your mission is simple: climb to the top of the world’s most prestigious football league, managing cutthroat competition on and off the pitch, all while debating pressing topics that face the Premier League today. Some of the main issues you will be discussing are player and fan safety, competition with the world’s other top leagues, new rules and regulations, and many more. If you have any questions regarding how the committee will run or how to prepare feel free to email me at [email protected].

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 2017 SPORTS Promoted Brighton in full Bloom LONDON: Tony Bloom is a feared presence at any poker table but on Monday the biggest wager of this renowned gambler, the £200 million invest- ment in Brighton, paid off with their promotion to the Premier League. The Seagulls have truly taken flight rising to a level that 20 years ago would have been deemed fantastical as they found themselves in dire straits like a character out of Charles Dickens novels, without a home and penniless. They only avoided relegation from the Football League on the last day of the 1996-97 season and were forced to play in Gillingham, 70 miles away from their home town, for the next two years after their old Goldstone Ground was sold to pay off debts. However, having reached their nadir they wal- lowed in lower league mediocrity until Bloom came along in 2009, and with a wave of his cheque book he transformed the then League One club’s fortunes on and off the pitch. Bloom, despite his reputation as a poker player, is also a keen busi- nessman and bears strong ties to the club histori- cally-his family were involved with Brighton dating back to the 1970s when his grandfather Harry was vice-chairman. The property investor nicknamed the “Lizard” by a rival poker player used his money to engineer a state-of-the-art stadium just outside Brighton- roughly a 10-minute rail journey-and whose repu- tation is such that it hosted matches at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, including the epic Japanese win over two-time world champions South Africa.

Signed: Candidate ID No. 14210010 Date: 26th June 2020. i Abstract This thesis is a study of the development of the management function in professional association football in England from the earliest days of codified and organised football to the present day. I have deployed the theoretical lens of figurational sociology, as formulated and described by Norbert Elias and his followers, notably Eric Dunning. This requires identification and analysis of the interdependencies and power relationships between the emergent function of football management and others forming the broader football figuration. As the game became a professional sport, the manager figure did not exist. Administrators eventually had their title changed from secretary to secretary-manager. In time this became simply ‘manager.’ The primary interdependencies were those of the manager with owners/directors and also with players.
