HON JUDITH COLLINS | Working hard for Papakura Authorised by Hon Judith Collins MP, Roselands Shopping Centre, 98 Great South Road, Papakura St John Op Shop opening

I hope that everyone has had a chance to visit the new St John Op Shop in Papakura that opened in December last year.

St John staff and volunteers do an excellent job of helping our communities keep healthy and safe. St John are obviously most well known for providing ambulance services throughout New Zealand. They also provide first aid training courses, support people in independent living and provide medical services at various events nationwide.

This Op Shop is a good way for St John to generate income to fund their great work. All profits directly benefit the Papakura area to build stronger communities and support people’s wellbeing. With lots of locals joining me in buying goods within the first minutes of the shop opening, I can see that this will be a very popular store to visit.

I encourage everyone to pop down to the Op Shop which is on 138 Great South Road, next to KiwiBank.

I was privileged to co-open the 30th Wild Foods Festival in Hokitika in March. There was a variety of exotic foods on offer. Thank you to Westland District Council Mayor, Bruce Smith for the invitation. It was quite a ‘wild’ start with my plane being delayed but the excellent hospitality from the people of the West Coast made the trip worthwhile. The Southern Corridor motorway expansion is continuing to make progress, although slower than hoped. The new northbound on-ramp on State Highway 1 is a magnificent piece of infrastructure. When it opened on Monday 11 February, it immediately improved traffic flows on the Southern Motorway northbound and on the Great South Road between Papakura and Manurewa.

I have been hearing from my constituents that since the opening of the new on-ramp there is definitely less congestion and shorter travel times. It was a privilege to be invited to the Women’s Royal NZ Air Force Reunion held at the Papakura RSA in November last year. I was honoured to be the guest speaker and to present the New Zealand Defence Force Medal to 10 of the women present.

It was particularly poignant for me as I had vigorously supported the issuing of the New Zealand Defence Force Medal when I was Minister of Veterans’ Affairs in 2008 - 2011. I saw how proud these women were to receive recognition of their service.

It was lovely to see the joy of old friends meeting after not seeing each other, in some cases, for many years. I congratulate them again on finally being acknowledged for their hard work.
