Describe your idea for social change in one single sentence. (150 characters)

1) Cultivate a popular trans-political movement to adapt Defense to defend nature as superpower for a just, sustainable global economy within 20 years. (148/150)

Describe your idea for social change in one single paragraph. (500 characters)

2) A massively ambitious focused expression can perpetuate a uniform natural strategy for social justice and capitalize opinion to circumvent politics. Through a large-scale performing arts strategy, Intelligent Future will unite artists, organizations, communities, and schools to advocate co-opting Defense to fully fund free lifelong education, green employment and healthcare for every person on Earth, and the application of its research to the merging of humankind with nature’s civilization. (495/500)

If you have previously applied for an Echoing Green Fellowship for this or any similar idea, what has changed since you last applied? (500 characters)

3) An expert on the Department of Defense—an economic engine requiring constant enemies, preparation for war, and insincere public service since 1947—I turned to nature’s forces of time, growth, and innate identity in search of resolution. My thesis A Theory of Quantum Identity and Natural Civilization enjoys daily validation by nature’s increasingly bankable momentum. 30 years as a composer-activist provide basis for popularizing and pursuing the global priority to unite all in defense of nature. (499/500)

What specific problem in are you trying to solve? Where possible, use statistics and references to identify the size and scope of the problem. (500 characters)

4) Conservationists in the journal Science advocate the defense of nature as a public good across all sectors of government, seeing biodiversity loss as often a result of unregulated human actions “as no single body has jurisdiction over the world’s biodiversity.” Meanwhile, humankind is born an instrument of nature beyond nationalism open to its orchestration and a reallocation of Defense taxes (65% of budget) from for-profit nationalism to natural socioeconomic justice—from killing to caretaking. (500/500)

What, specifically, will be your programs or products? Who will you work with? (1000 characters)

5) IF will begin as a sing-along recording enterprise (own giant TelePrompTer) working with Western Washington University, Mt. Baker Theatre, and the community of Bellingham to produce, with students and members, a peace anthem—centerpiece of a Broadway-worthy folk-rock opera of 16 songs. Composition of the opera began the night of John Lennon’s death in 1980 and ends my thesis project (degree 2009). During the first year, I will perform and record all music and lyrics for viewing while pursuing relationships with likeminded artists and organizations for production and promotion of the opera in the second year, including development of tour and/or global video-event capability and inclusion of such artists as David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and Bellingham native Hillary Swank. While producing further entertainment works on natural civilization including an epic novel and screenplay trilogy, IF will serve to unite all worthy charities and causes in obtaining resolution via Defense funding. (997/1000)

Describe the impact you hope to achieve. In what time frame? What specific metrics will help you determine whether your work is making a difference? (1000 characters)

6) Baseline metrics from Pentagon statistics: DOD agreements with 1200 universities in 35 countries (wherein a majority of students desire a free education and future) and DOD contracts with millions of firms in all states and 198 countries and territories (comprising the technology needed to make the defense of nature and future our global economic engine). These entities currently serve the National Defense Strategy of “Full Spectrum Dominance.” Conceived in 1947 as economic stimulus and thereafter abused at massive expense, NDS is on collision course with nature’s strategy of full spectrum diversity, diversity the US claims to represent. More public and palpable are poor federal budget allocations for education, healthcare, employment other than military, and state industries other than Defense. Reaction will be reflected in attention similar to but less than Avatar, prompting perpetual discussion of the definition of defense, human priorities, and the adoption of nature as superpower. (1000/1000)

How does this approach represent bold innovation versus the status quo? (1000 characters)

7) This peace strategy does not yet exist for comparison: defense and diversity have not been strategically defined. The market for injustice is unjustly strong: defense against terror is as lucrative as it is destructive in its misdirection. At war with a man no one proves is alive, we elect presidents of this market for injustice, not of a viable economy, and as they come and go only Defense gets more funding, 65% of taxes while 0.5% provides for education. Thankfully, we require a wealthy defense, nature is by definition a defensive revolution, and proper defense is our right. The industry is in place needing only a natural perspective driven by global opinion from a clear choice between nature and nationalism. As a constituent of nature innately capable of total commitment, we are not multicultural but multi-dysfunctional, ripe for productive unification wherein education is defense, taxes defend the environment and transform our economy, and caretaking is the occupation of humankind. (1000/1000)

How much money will this organization need in the next 12 months? In the year after? How much have you raised so far? From whom? How do you plan to get the rest? (500 characters)

8) IF Productions needs $30,000 the first year, $60,000 the second, and exponentially more thereafter. For the startup phase, IF is perfectly situated on the bay beneath campus, has equipment for early rehearsal/recording, and reached this point thanks to $200,000 in federal student loans and $80,000 in scholarships; bankruptcy declared after graduation. The simplicity and attractiveness of the solution—of inviting charities and the public to define defense—and my charming skills will raise funds. (499/500)

Your interest in starting this organization makes you unlike most people. What in your personal, academic, and/or work history compels you to dedicate your life to this idea at this time? (1000 characters)

9) I chose good governance because it covers all categories. I have pondered the necessary steps to transcend politics for 50 years, knowing from childhood exposure to Pete Seeger and Dr. King and later experiences with Carl Sagan and Noam Chomsky that time would come when nature provides in daily news the persuasive force for comprehensive social change. As a physicist in Silicon Valley, few jobs existed not tied to Defense, with most tied to weaponry sales and none to the defense of biodiversity. From moral conviction, the death of John Lennon ignited my artistic ambition to seek civilizational resolution even while essentially building better bombs; I wrote 500 songs within six months. In 1991, having refused DOD clearance at each job, I quit to pursue resolution in school after an employer cited war and terrorism as “very good for us” at a quarterly meeting. His viewpoint explained perpetual war and bad governance. Only nature will deliver just governance, and always more so each day. (1000/1000)

What skills or experiences demonstrate that you will be able to attract money, people, and other resources to your idea? (1000 characters)

10) As a graduate research project on the first day of fall term 2005, I began a cordial strike in a large discussion tent opposite the administration building at University of after giving a speech at noon, the same time activist Medea Benjamin was delivering my Petition for Peaceful Priorities to the White House. In summer, with help from Noam Chomsky, I’d gathered tens of thousands of signatures from around the world, had televised locally a weekly five-part series, America Programmed for War, and raised more than $6,000 via my Intelligent Future email group. I also met with UO administrators and public safety officials to elucidate the purpose and meaning of the strike as my refusal to study inside classrooms until the faculty senate addressed DOD funding, not a call for others to join. I then met with each faculty senator to discuss the unilateral nature of the funding process. Hearings took place within two months, continued through spring, and delivered my predicted results. (999/1000)

What evidence do you have of your ability to overcome challenges and adversity? (1000 characters)

11) This project and its awards are evidence, beginning in childhood, continuing improved by tragic family circumstance because the civilizational equation pursued remained constant. Living alone from age 13 due to divorce and illness of mother and brother, each Defense job I took was necessary for survival. But amid stood a clear conflict of interest, and eventually, again through loss—of John Lennon—my artistic resolve grew as constant as the equation. I applied for school and passionately developed all necessary skills. Publications this decade from In Search of a Prime Directive to A Theory of Quantum Identity and Natural Civilization evidence my success and evolution of an ability to articulate and persuade via simplicity. Natural civilization, the fullness of diversity, improves all things as caretakers and does not long tolerate separation. It is a 14-billion-year-old trans-partisan revolution with an innate identity reflected within us; a superpower humankind knows it must embrace. (1000/1000)
