Broadland Northway A1270: temporary lane closures and speed limits with Sunday closures on various adjoining roads

Proactive planned maintenance will be taking place over a number of days this summer along the route of the Broadland Northway. The road is set to receive a specialist treatment to maintain the existing surface in its as new condition.

The quick to apply treatment is cost effective as it cuts any long-term maintenance costs and has been chosen as it’s suitable for roads that are already in a good condition. The technique has successfully been used in a number of locations in Norfolk including in 2020 on the new A47/A143 link road near Gorleston.

The fast-moving works, which will only be carried out at off peak times, are able to treat and reopen sections of the route within a few hours, which means any traffic disruption can be kept to an absolute minimum. While the traffic management is in place crews will also carry out any necessary routine maintenance including sign repairs and gully cleaning along the route.

The weather dependent work will be carried out between 19 July to 22 August.

The Broadland Northway will remain open at all times with lane closures and 10mph limits in place only on the section of road that crews are working on. Some junction closures will be necessary at weekends to allow for the junctions and some sections of nearby roads to be treated too. Fully signed official diversion routes will be in place.

Work will be starting at the eastern end of the route, near to the Poppy Way roundabout, from 9.30am on Monday 19 July.

The following junctions will be closed on the dates below – meaning that there will be no access from the junction onto the Broadland Northway for a number of hours while work is underway (the Broadland Northway itself will remain open at all times):

1. Sunday 25 July and Sunday 1 August - Thorpe End Drive and parts of Plumstead Road 2. Sunday 1 and Sunday 8 August - B1149 Brewery Lane and Holt Road 3. Sunday 8 and Sunday 15 August - C261 Reepham Road & C282 Brewery Lane/ Drayton Lane 4. Sunday 15 and Sunday 22 August - C258 Green Lane West (temporary traffic lights will be in place on the A1151 Road while work is underway)

The County Council thanks people for their patience while these proactive planned maintenance works are carried out.

The specialist treatment that the Broadland Northway will be getting is using Reclamite – this is a treatment that is applied to the surface of a road to maintain its as new condition. The spray penetrates and rejuvenates the bitumen that binds the road surface together keeping it in an as new condition for longer, cutting long term maintenance costs. The treatment also has a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to other surfacing techniques which involve the quarrying and transportation of aggregates.

The treatment is expected to cost approximately £800,000, and work will be carried out by ’s Community and Environmental Services Department and their contractors.
