Share Heavy rains over the state of due to a low pressure area built over West

India: Situation report - Assam floods, 11 Oct 2004

Bengal region on 7th October’04 had triggered flash floods in the districts of , Karbi Anglong, , and landslides in Kamrup Metropolitan district. The situation worsened in as 50,000 people were reported to be affected. Army and Air force were called in for rescue operations and 2 helicopters were engaged in Krishnai and Bolbola in Goalpara district for the same. Buses and trucks have been used to transport the affected people to safer places. The situation is improving in Karbi Anglong and Kamrup Metropolitan districts with receding of water in the rivers.

112 people have been reported killed so far, in different flash flood related incidents in Goalpara district. Three deaths due to drowning have been reported from South Salmara subdivision in . In two separate landslides in city on 7th and 8th October,04- seventeen deaths have taken place and two more people died due to electrocution. Five persons are feared dead in Mangaldoi district, as a boat capsized in the swelling river Jia Dhansiri. One body was recovered by the District Administration and rest two is missing. The death toll in the state due to flash floods and landslides has reached to 135.

DAMAGES: National Highway no-37 connecting Upper Assam and has been disrupted due to over flow of flood waters since 10th October, 04. In district, Doboka - road connecting with , has been submerged, thus disrupting vehicular movement. GOVERNMENT MEASURES: 21 relief camps have been opened by District Administration in Karbi Anglong with 15065 inmates, taking shelter. Affected people of Marigaon district have been shifted to safer places In Kamrup metropolitan district,15 relief camps have been opened since 7th October’04 and about 7000 inmates have taken shelter.

In Goalpara District -two medical teams along with emergency medicines, ORS, Phenyl, bleaching powder have been dispatched to Goalpara on 10th October’04. Honorable Revenue Minister and Additional Chief Secretary are camping at Goalpara and reviewing the rescue operations.
