    EMKE Group Unveils Dh1.5b Expansion Plan in Abu Dhabi EMKE Group, one of the largest retail chains in the Gulf region, has finalised its plans to expand its customer reach across Abu Dhabi by investing Dh1.5 billion in the next 18-months. The next phase of expansion involves opening of seven new shopping malls and hypermarkets in the emirate of Abu Dhabi alone — a plan which will be completed by the end of 2010, In an interview with Khaleej Times, Yusuffali MA, Managing Director of Abu Dhabi-based EMKE Group, who is also on the board of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that he had strong faith in the economic vision of Abu Dhabi government and does not see any need to slow down or rethink on th group’s expansion plans. He termed the current market turmoil as a temporary economic phenomena. “A strong group like us will become ever more stronger during these tough times,” he said. The group recently opened Lulu Express Supermarket and Mazyad Mall in Mohammed Bbin Zayed City ?in Abu Dhabi. According to GRC, a market research consultancy, Lulu Hypermarket has 32 per cent market share in GCC region’s organised grocery retail sector. In the UAE, the group has 43 per cent market share with a $2.1 billion sales turnover at the end of 2008. “We are also looking for new locations to expand our Lulu Express concept, especially in upcoming residential suburbs,” Yusuffali said. The group, which already has strong market presence in the capital, operates popular shopping malls Khalidiya Mall, Al Wahda Mall, Al Raha Mall and Madinat Zayed Shopping Center.

Abstract The retailing sector of Kerala is gradually marching its way towards becoming the next boom industry. The whole concept of shopping has altered in terms of format and consumer buying behaviour, ushering a revolution of shopping. The growth of integrated shopping malls, retail chains and multi-brand outlets is evidence of consumer behaviour being favourable to the growing organized segment of the business. Modern retail has entered Kerala as seen in sprawling shopping centres, multi stored malls and huge complexes offer shopping, entertainment and food courts. Due to these factors, the meaning of shopping has changed. It is not just a mere necessity, as it was earlier, but much more than that. The factors that affect store choice and draw customers to the shopping centre include space, ambience, and convenience and moreover an array of choice under same roof. Space, ambience and convenience are beginning to play an important role in drawing customers. This paper would concentrate on the consumer response towards the large retail outlet, behaviour the consumer exhibits while visiting or making purchases in the Lulu Mall. It would explore the purpose and motive behind the Kerala consumers ‘visit to this well-established shopping mall, the values they derive from the shopping trip and their shopping behaviour in terms of impulse purchases, time and money spent at the Lulu Mall.

The closest way to describe its customer loyalty is "cult following". However, at Emke Group, loyalty is a two-way street. "Loyalty is the key to our success. We have a strong loyal customer base. However, we are also loyal to them," Yusuffali MA, Managing Director of Emke Group, said. "We have been investing in constantly upgrading services and standards. This comes from our loyalty to the customers," he said. "Also, we have invested in the supply chain to directly source better products from farms and producers at cheaper price, cutting the middleman. This helps us to offer products at a cheaper price to customers." Although the group's strength derives from its origins - rooted in Kerala - and from the strong community bond that also generates hefty cash for community-linked businesses, the company's customer base is quite diverse. Many Emiratis and Gulf Cooperation Council nationals shop regularly at LuLu. Non-resident Keralites (NRKs) probably form the largest ethnic community in the UAE. Their choice of shopping destination could make a retailer or supplier rich or bankrupt. However, in Abu Dhabi, 60 per cent of the company's customers are UAE nationals, he said.     EMKE Group Plans Dh4.3b Expansion DUBAI - UAE-based EMKE Group, one of the largest retail chains in the Middle East, plans to invest Dh4.3 billion by the end of next year for its retail stores across the Gulf region and one multi-purpose property in Cochin, India, a top official of the company said. The group has planned to open 14 new hypermarkets and shopping malls in the Gulf region by the end of 2010, with a total investment of Dh3.2 billion. Abu Dhabi alone will have seven more stores by next year with an investment of Dh1.5 billion. The company has also planned an investment of Dh1.1 billion for its maiden project in India. The four-decade old group operates retail chain stores that include Lulu chain of supermarkets, department stores, hypermarkets and now shopping malls. Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, the group will inaugurate its 75th LuLu Hypermarket in Al Ain on Sunday, the biggest hypermarket in Al Ain. Lulu Hypermarkets is a retail division of EMKE Group, which has 74 stores across the Middle East and the company plans to open its 100th store by the end of 2011. “Opening of the 75th LuLu Hypermarket in Al Ain will be a turning point for us as we are targeting to reach 100 stores by the end of 2011,” Yusuffali M.A., Managing Director of the group, told Khaleej Times. Over the years, EMKE Group has ventured into varied businesses operating in the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, Kenya, Tanzania and Benin.

    First LuLu Hypermarket Opens in Saudi Arabia Emke Group, the largest chain of retail stores in the Gulf, has opened its first shopping outlet in Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia, with plans to invest Dh600 million in the next 12-months to expand its business. The retail group, which runs a chain of 75 hypermarkets across the region, opened doors in the kingdom on Wednesday, as part of its aggressive expansion drive, under which 24 more outlets would be opened in the UAE and in the region by the year-end. Elaborating on the future plans for the largest Arab economy, Yusuffali MA, Managing Director of the Emke Group, described the kingdom as crucial to its expansion drive outside of the UAE, as its economy is mammoth-sized with an affluent and growing population. “We have to expand aggressively there, as the oil rich nation is investing in its industries that mean more jobs and business,” Yusuffali MA said on the occasion of the inauguration. In the course of next 12-months, Dh600 million would be spent to roll-out four more hypermarkets in the kingdom, he added. The Emke Group spent Dh140 million to set up the hypermarket in Al Khobar, which is spread over an area of 250,000 square feet. Located on King Fahd street, it gives easy access for the residents of Dammam region and also for the visitors from Bahrain. On the impact of ongoing financial crisis, Yusuffali said the group is going ahead with its planned projects. It already opened five stores this year, which many analysts have describe as a turbulent year.
