7 A bit of the Bible ……. ‘Many people will come and say: Come let us go up to the mountain of Yahweh to the house of God ' Isaiah 2:3

What is the church? A building? A distinct organization with agreed forms and norms? People who come on a Sunday? In just a few wonderful verses in chapter 2 Isaiah teaches us that the church is a worldwide company from every nation and people drawn together by the magnetic power of the Word of God. There is a magnetic quality about God’s word as the Spirit of God opens our hearts and minds to it. Without pushing the analogy too far the Old Testament stresses ‘ingathering’ while the New stresses ‘outreach’. The New Testament sends out missionaries the old thinks of a magnet. Do you see your local church as a magnet? Is the word of God so active amongst us through his spirit that people are drawn to meet with us? We have all inherited from our past our cherished ‘traditions’, our received preferences. While not undervaluing them, we need to regularly review them. Have they become more important than the word of God? Do they present what the Bible teaches today? In some cases are they scriptural at all? Is our church known primarily as a place where God’s word reigns supreme? If asked would non members describe us as those who love the Bible? Isaiah so to speak overhears people talking. They express their desire to learn God’s word. ‘ So that He may teach us his ways that we may walk in his paths’ . It is only as we each yearn for the Word that the whole company will bear the mark of the Word, and experience its power to draw others in. Read v. 4 and discover the thought that when we cherish his Word the Lord will teach us Christ like ways of peace and reconciliation.

GAP This stands for GROWTH ACTION PLAN. Each parish has been asked by the Bishop to produce one. The PCC considered our strong points and last year, with the Rev Alex Sanders we decided that we could concentrate on strengthening our links with the school and developing our work with couples coming to St Oswald's to be married. Both would contribute to our growth.

This year we will build on this and also try to:

* improve the magazine with colour * maintain and improve communications using our excellent web-site * encourage members of the congregation to lead the intercessions * make the vestry space more efficient and user-friendly

It becomes obvious that this is a way to make us think about how we can be of service to the church and community and thereby spread the good news of the gospel.

If you have any comments or questions then please ask the Wardens and PCC members.
