e said he needed a whisky to calm his nerves and no one can blame him for wanting a belt or two. “Just got down to the corner and I saw blue smokeH and I figured a belt was burning somewhere. So I turned and the field was on fire,” said Norman Fenning who was driving the combine on his sister’s land being rented by his son James. The combine had caught fire, and subsequently the field with approximately 30 acres of peas went up in flames. In typical hard-core farmer fashion, Norman tried to put the fire out with harvested peas. When he found that didn’t work, and the fire started to burn farther afield, he then ran to move two grain trucks out of the way of the blaze. He had checked the combine that morning before heading out to the field and had given it a once over last night when he parked it. “I leave for 20 minutes…” soot smeared James Fenning said of the fire. All three members of the Fenning family were shaken, but no one was injured. Sheldon, son to James and grandson to Norman, was also there. “We had three of our units, two pumps and called Pilot Butte in,” Balgonie Fire Chief Dave Campbell said. The estimated value on the combine is $20,000 to $30,000 dollars. “Probably what happened, there was probably some metal that produced a spark as it went through the cylin- der at the front of the combine. By the time it gets back here it is burning,” guessed Campbell at the fire’s cause and pointed out some scorched metal at the back of the machine, still steaming from the water the fire teams had put on it. Above: The August 19 fire off of Ladysmith Road was put out quickly, leaving behind a scorched combine and some roasted Campbell said the fire call came in around 10:30 peas. Below right: Fire Chief Dave Campbell. Photos: Michelle Nicholson minutes later the combine and field fire had been extin- guished. A few members of the Balgonie fire crew stayed on scene to look over and hose the combine to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. An RCMP officer came out to the fire on land just off of Ladysmith Road, as did the Rural Municipality (RM) of Edenwold’s Community Safety Officers. CSO Ron Roteliuk said he and fellow officer Rod Ash saw the flames from their office within the nearby RM of Edenwold maintenance shop. They made their way over to the fire and arrived just before the fire crews got there. “I’ll phone around and see if we can find another com- bine,” James said of his next steps. Photo: Michelle A“I’ve never had that before,” he said, “it’s gotta be one time in a Nicholson lifetime that you’d ever get one like that.” Nielsen was on his way out to supper and then on to holidays. The trophy presentation from Club President Don Leir was a great way to kick off his time away. Although Nielsen has been playing crib “off and on for probably the last 20 or 30 years,” he has only been a member of the club since Christmas of 2014. Along with a trophy, Nielsen was given a framed picture of himself holding his winning hand and was honoured to be the first listed on the new 29-hand plaque that will hang in the club. Club members sang, “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” before saying grace and enjoying a barbecue supper. Don Leir pointed out that there was room for 12 names on the plaque and he wants to see all of them filled: “before I join that big cribbage game in the sky,” Leir said. Playing with Nielsen July 28, the day he made the 29-hand, were Bob Champion, Don Leir and Barry Leibel. Leir believes this may be the first 29-hand win of a Golden Sunset Club member at a Pilot Butte club game. In February of this year the Golden Sunset Seniors Club recognized the Village of Edenwold Golden Age Senior’s Club member Lorraine Sauer for her 29-hand.
