7168 LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY Wednesday 9 November 2011 __________ The Speaker (The Hon. Shelley Elizabeth Hancock) took the chair at 10.00 a.m. The Speaker read the Prayer and acknowledgement of country. AUDITOR-GENERAL'S REPORT The Clerk announced the receipt, pursuant to section 63C of the Public Finance and Audit Act 1983, of the report of the Auditor-General for 2011, volume five, received 9 November 2011. SPORTING VENUES AUTHORITIES AMENDMENT (VENUES NSW) BILL 2011 Agreement in Principle Debate resumed from 19 October 2011. Mr TIM OWEN (Newcastle) [10.02 a.m.]: I support the Sporting Venues Authorities (Venues NSW) Amendment Bill 2011, which was introduced by the great Minister for Sport and Recreation, who is seated at the table. The bill delivers key elements of the Government's policy agenda for building stronger, healthier and more engaged communities. Quite simply, the bill makes sense. Sport and entertainment are at the forefront of bringing regional communities together in good times and in bad. Sporting and entertainment venues—at which one cheers on the local under sevens, has the chance to see a major international performer without having to travel to Sydney, or watches the local footy team beat the opposing side—are the lifeblood of regional communities. The government-owned venues in my electorate that will come under Venues NSW include Ausgrid Stadium, the Newcastle Entertainment Centre and Newcastle Showground, as well as a number of other venues currently managed by the Hunter Region Sporting Venues Authority. The bill is focused on achieving the best performance of these venues for the people of Newcastle.

23031 LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY Wednesday 19 May 2010 __________ The Speaker (The Hon. George Richard Torbay) took the chair at 10.00 a.m. The Speaker read the Prayer and acknowledgement of country. BUSINESS OF THE HOUSE Notices of Motions General Business Notices of Motions (General Notices) given. PRIVATE MEMBERS' STATEMENTS __________ ILLEGAL BOARDING HOUSES Mr VICTOR DOMINELLO (Ryde) [10.03 a.m.]: About 11 weeks ago, on 25 February 2010, I addressed this Chamber about the problems associated with the proliferation of illegal boarding houses in Ryde. At that time a residents' action group today known as Marsfield Against Residential Suffocation [MARS] was in its infancy. Today MARS is a well-organised and passionate group led by local Marsfield resident Alan Patrick. I would like to make special mention of Peter Groenestyn, Gloria Dartnell, Neil Yakalis, Sylvain Flore, and Rodney and Helen Simmons, who are just some of the hardworking members of the MARS team. The MARS action group is calling on all governments to work together to provide increased student housing capacity in the short term and to plan innovatively for the long-term housing needs of the increasing number of international students at Macquarie University and international workers employed by businesses within the Macquarie Park business precinct. In addition, the group wants to see unscrupulous boarding house operators punished with significant financial penalties and enforcement orders brought against them. Shortly I will be presented with a petition from the MARS action group spokesman Alan Patrick on the steps of the Parliament. The petition contains, I am led to believe, over 1,000 signatures from concerned residents calling on Premier Kristina Keneally and her State Labor Government to act immediately to get rid of the boarding house provisions of the Affordable Rental Housing State Environmental Planning Policy, and to take decisive action to give local councils the power they need to inspect illegal boarding houses and make enforcement orders against their proprietors.

This might have something to do with his love of mullet! Last month, Tim Love (then Manager of Red Spot) noticed that poor Knobbly had a fishing line stuck in his throat. What happened next is an amazing chain of events that eventually resulted in a recovered Knobbly being released into the channel a few weeks later in front of all his rescuers. On that day, the 11th of May 2021, Tim saw at once that help was needed if Knobbly was to survive. He called the Sweet Pea Vet Clinic who gave him good advice on how to capture a pelican. Tim used a mullet to distract Knobbly while his colleague covered the pelican up with a sheet. Tim then scooped Knobbly up and took Below: Tim Love with Knobbly the Pelican.
