The Redvers Activity Centre is very lucky to have a long-term participant and employee at the Centre. The attached picture spotlights two of the people who have been with the Centre for many years. Joanne Mills will have been with the Centre for 49 years in August. Joanne has been attending the Day Program and living with the support of Redvers Activity Centre throughout this entire time. Shelley Raymond will have been with the Centre for 31 years in August. Both Joanne and Shelley are an integral part of our program. With rich experience like they have, they are a wealth of knowledge for those of us who haven’t been around as long. It’s rare to have people who are so loyal, dedicated and committed to an Agency and we are fortunate to have them both! LEMON TREE, VERY PRETTY Submitted by Jocelyn Hainsworth

In an effort to control my urge to plant approximately a hundred different things at a time when it is way too early to do such a silly thing (trust me, I’ve have made this mistake once or twice) I have allowed myself just a few very slow growing babies to soak up the sunlight in my south window. It’s a kind of an inoculation against the raging lunacy that Spring Fever can bring on if I let it get even a toe-hold in my life.

Biggest, and most impressive, is the amaryllis that took last year off and was way late this year but has finally treated me to blooms. At the other end of the shelf is an orchid that is sending out a full stem of buds even though the leaves all look dead. The poor thing fell off its perch a few months ago and lost the entire growing medium the roots were in. As best as I could, I put it all back together and now I have this dead plant obviously planning on going out with a bang. It’s a strange world.

Off to the side I have my surprise morning glory that treats me to a new blossom every once in a while. It’s only here because at Christmas time I planted a whole bunch of lemon seeds to see if they would germinate. The morning glory came up immediately – on the shortest day of the year. You’ve got to love a plant with that kind of chutzpah!

But the main space on the shelf is lemon tree territory. The Internet had warned me that lemons take a month to germinate, and sure enough toward the end of January skinny green poles started poking through. I planted 32 seeds and got 22 seedlings. I am pretty pleased with my success and have absolutely no idea what I`m going to do with them.

That didn’t stop me from transplanting them into bigger homes, though. They grew for me; I owe them the space they need to flourish. One consequence of years of gardening is owning all sorts of containers to put plants in... luckily in many sizes. I had never grown trees from seeds before – their roots are probably triple the length of whatever appears above the ground. No wonder they took so long to come up, there was a lot going on out of sight.

Since getting re-homed they have sprouted even more leaves – dark, shiny, green leaves on strong stems. My plan to counter Spring Fever with something that grows well, but in slow motion, is working beautifully.

A week or two ago I decided if one perennial was good for me, two would be better. I had saved some seeds out of my Concord Grapes so I planted a batch of those as well. There’s no action yet but it gives me something to check every morning.

The daylight hours are lengthening out and the temperatures are creeping upward. Very soon it will not be ridiculous to get out the annual seeds and go my usual kind of crazy. Meanwhile I have my little lemon grove and the words of a song from the 1960s ringing in my head...“Lemon tree, very pretty! And the lemon flower is sweet. But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat!”

If you’re prone to earworms, you’re welcome. Have a great March! HAVEN HAPPENINGS MARCH 2020 Submitted by Barbara Dennis

February – Valentines – flowers – Jeremy proved himself a real ladies man when he went above and beyond his cook duties by delivering flowers to all the ladies on Valentine’s Day. Photographed above, Jeremy with Margaret, Carolyn, Pat and Aileen with their single flower bouquets. Way to win the hearts of the ladies Jeremy!

One of the favorite activities at the Haven is Bat Ball. What is Bat Ball, you ask? Participants, (from 3 to 12) sit around a table height playing surface, weald a styrofoam bat and hit a balloon around. It is fun, (I know because they laugh and joke), improves hand eye co-ordination, and is great exercise!

It is beginning to look a little like Hawaii around the Haven. Grass skirts, pineapples, palm trees and scantily clad ladies are being seen round about. The residents are tracking their miles and counting down the distance prior to our Hawaiian themed party taking place in about 3 weeks time. Aloha – here we come!!

Speaking of party – a crew from the condos is coming to host the March monthly birthday party on the 19th. Fred’s Friends will be providing the entertainment- looking forward to a great afternoon! Other entertainers this month are Keith Olsen on the 3rd, the Singing Seniors ( based group under the leadership of Marie Vail – formerly the Kitchen Utensils), Lyon’s Country Band will return on the 10th, and the Happy Wanderers will round out the month on the 27th.

The Activity Department is treating the residents to a dinner meal of Kentucky Fried Chicken: something that many of them truly look forward to. The cost of delivery is the same if we feed 24 or 44 so… if YOU would like to treat YOURSELF to Kentucky Fried Chicken – act quickly – come to reception and place your name on the list and pay for your meal by March 9 by 4 o’clock and on Wednesday March 11 come to the Haven and pick up your meal. For $12.00 you will receive 2 to 3 pieces of chicken, a baked potato, KFC coleslaw and an ice cream dickie cup. You don’t need to travel very far to get your KFC and you will be helping to defray our costs – thank you! See you on the 11th.

You may be familiar with this bit of folklore about March: If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb.

Is there any truth to this saying? Weather folklore sayings are as colorful as our imagination. While many sayings are based on careful observations and turn out to be accurate, others are merely rhymes or beliefs of the people who came before us.

Ancestral Beliefs—Balance Those people often believed that bad spirits could affect the weather adversely, so they were cautious as to what they did or did not do in certain situations.

Those beliefs often included ideas that there should be a balance in weather and life. So, if a month came in bad (roaring like a lion), it should go out good and calm (docile, like a lamb).

With March being such a changeable month, in which we can see warm spring-like temperatures or late-season snowstorms, you can understand how this saying might hold true in some instances.

We can only hope that if March starts off stormy it will end on a calm note, but the key word is hope. However, this saying seems to be simply a rhyme rather than a true weather predictor.

Snowmobilers are always welcome!

The Redvers & District Recreation Centre has been the place to be over the last couple of weeks. With playoffs and provincials well on their way it has been very busy and by the looks of our teams it’s not going to slow down anytime soon… The initiation teams have finished up their season this past weekend; these little people sure have improved form the start of the season wow!! We had 2 Novice teams this season and both made it to the playoff tournament that will be held here March 7th – be sure to watch for times. The Atom, Bantam and Midget 1 team have games this week to finish up their first round of playoffs! Good luck to them this week! PeeWee and Midget 2 both swept their first round of playoffs beating and Wolves. The Peewee’s will be playing off against Carlyle next and the Midgets will be headed back to either Estevan or for round 2.

What a weekend……. This past weekend was one for the books. The Recreation Centre was packed to the brim. The Redvers Rockets played off Saturday and Sunday against the Davidson Cyclones and brought the entire town together to support them! After going to Davidson they were down the first game so they had to win Saturday to push through to game 3 and that’s exactly what they did. It was an intense game with a final score of 4-3. Sunday the crowd came back to watch the Rockets and again they did not disappoint. It was a nail biter of a game with Redvers pulling the 5-4 win out in overtime! Next on the provincial list for the Rockets will be .

The Bantams also played Davidson in their 2nd round of provincials unfortunately it was not the outcome we were hoping for losing both games knocking them out of provincials. Midget 2 faced off against Milestone for their 2nd round of provincials taking that series 2-0. They will be headed to Maple Creek next! Good Luck boys!

A couple of things to make note of on your calendar – March 6&7 is the Farms and Friends Bonspiel be sure to give brad a call to enter your team. Moccasin Lock-up is getting close as well April 3 & 4 so be sure to give Alicia a call, teams are filling up quick.
