Page  2010 UTSA Roadrunners Volleyball Match Notes UTSA HEAD COACH - LAURA NEUGEBAUER-GROFF A highly-respected coach and player who is legendary locally, Laura Neugebauer- Groff is in her ninth season at the helm of UTSA’s volleyball program.

She has tutored 31 All-Southland Conference players (10 first-team selections) and 16 all-academic honorees, including 2005 Southland Student-Athlete of the Year Meagan Daniel. Under her guidance, UTSA also has advanced to eight con- secutive conference tournaments and the program was honored with the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Team Academic Award in Spring 2008.

The Roadrunners won 22 matches in 2010, the most under Neugebauer-Groff’s direction. She guided UTSA to the program’s second Southland Conference Tour- nament Championship after outlasting top-seed Central Arkansas in five frames. UTSA tied Central Arkansas for the most All-Southland players with five, including 2010 Southland Conference Final Standings junior Kelsey Jewasko, who was named Libero of the Year. Senior Kendra Rowland and redshirt-sophomore Kelsey Schwirtlich also garnered First Team All- EAST DIVISION Southland honors and senior Briana Mason and sophomore Whitney Walls were LAURA NEUGEBAUER-GROFF Team Conf. Ovr. named honorable mention. Central Arkansas 15-1 28-8 Playing arguably the most difficult schedule in school annals, she led the Roadrunners to a dozen wins in 2009. Neuge- Lamar 8-8 13-16 bauer-Groff became the winningest coach in program history when the Birds defeated Cal State Bakersfield on Sept. 8, McNeese State 8-8 14-18 2009 and her career ledger now stands at 402-203 (.664), including 146 victories at UTSA. Nicholls 6-10 14-16 UTSA posted 19 wins, tied for the most during her tenure, in 2008. Rowland and Jewasko both earned first-team Northwestern State 4-12 13-16 All-Southland accolades and Jewasko was named the league’s Libero of the Year, the first honoree in school history. Southeastern Louisiana 1-15 10-23 Stefanie Robbins was tabbed the conference’s Newcomer of the Year and she joined Amber Brooks as an All-Southland honorable mention selection. WEST DIVISION Neugebauer-Groff posted her 300th career victory in the 2005 season opener against Delaware and led the Roadrun- Team Conf. Texas State 12-4 19-12 UT Arlington 10-6 17-15 In 2003, Neugebauer-Groff led UTSA to a remarkable turnaround, winning more than twice as many matches than the previous season en route to a 19-14 record and a 13-7 mark in SLC play. Austin 5-11 12-19 A former All-American at the University of Texas, Neugebauer-Groff captained the Longhorns to four Southwest Confer- ence Championships from 1982-85. In 1992, she was named to the league’s All-Decade team, and in 2002, the San Antonio Express-News named her one of its most-influential people in women’s sports. 2010 Southland Conference Tournament Neugebauer-Groff was a member of the National Sports Festival squad in 1983 and also participated at the 1995 World Nov. 19-21 in Huntsville, Texas University Games in Japan. From 1986-87, she played professionally for the West German Volleyball League before joining the Chicago Breeze a year later. Neugebauer-Groff has been an annual participant in the United States Vol- leyball Association National Tournament since 1987. QUARTERFINALS #2 UTSA def. #5 McNeese State, 3-2 Her playing days behind her, Neugebauer-Groff was not done with the game and certainly was not done with winning. #6 Lamar def. #3 Texas State, 3-2 After brief stints at Hondo High School (1988-90) and as an assistant coach at Texas A&M (1990-92), she accepted #1 Central Arkansas def. #8 Nicholls, 3-0 the head coaching position locally at St. Mary’s University. It was there that she put together a sparkling 256-62 (.805) record and three national tournament appearances during her eight-year tenure. Neugebauer-Groff finished her stay #4 UT Arlington def. #5 Sam Houston State, 3-1 with a 35-5 mark, the 2000 Heartland Conference Championship and league Coach of the Year honors for the fifth time.

SEMIFINALS When she began her tenure at St. Mary’s, Neugebauer-Groff signed on as the Director of the Alamo Volleyball Club. #2 UTSA def. #6 Lamar, 3-0 She held that position from 1993-2006 and continues to be an active participant in developing volleyball in South Texas. Her local contributions have not gone unnoticed, as she was one of five recipients of the 2006 Robert L. Lindsay #1 Central Arkansas def. #4 UT Arlington, 3-0 Meritorious Service Award (presented annually to USA Volleyball members who make outstanding contributions in the area of regional operations). Neugebauer-Groff also was a part of Jefferson High School’s inaugural Hall of Fame and FINALS Distinguished Alumni Class in May 2007 and a member of the UIL’s All-Century third team in 2009. #2 UTSA def. #1 Central Arkansas, 3-2 “I feel like I’ve come full circle,” Neugebauer-Groff said when she was hired in 2002. “As a former Texas player to be back in the University of Texas system and also in San Antonio is like a dream come true.”
