Dear Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for showing an interest in our school. We hope that this brochure will provide you with the information you need and give you some idea of the school’s special character.

We are a successful and rapidly expanding establishment which has full authorisation from both the British and the Spanish authorities. Our aim is to provide an excellent all-round for pupils in a secure and stimulating environment. We have a team of dedicated, well-qualified teachers and able support staff. The school also benefits from a splendid setting and comfortable, attractive facilities.

Since the school was founded in 1989 much has been achieved. The school population has now reached over 250 pupils. Our maximum capacity is around 350. We continually strive to improve the quality of what we offer.. In addition to bright, airy classrooms with computer facilities and several with audio-visual equipment, facilities include Primary and Secondary libraries, outdoor sports areas ,two secondary computer rooms, Primary computer facilities, three Science laboratories, a Sixth Form study area and a kitchen and dining hall. For a relatively small school we offer a wide range of optional subjects for pupils to choose from at GCSE and A-level.

As a member of the National Association of British Schools in this school is authorised to deliver the National Curriculum and all these lessons, with the obvious exception of Modern Languages, are delivered in English. We also have authorisation from the Spanish education authorities to teach the core subjects of the Spanish curriculum (Lengua and Sociales/ Conocimiento del Medio) and these with the National Curriculum subjects meet the legal requirements for compulsory education in Spain. At the end of their education our students can apply with confidence to universities in England, Spain and worldwide.

This brochure can only afford you a brief glimpse of the school’s life. If you would like to know more, I strongly recommend that you visit the school and see the staff and pupils at work. A telephone call is all that is required to arrange a conducted tour of the school.

We are an all-ability school, with a selection policy based primarily on interview and a satisfactory behavioural record. We do have a minimum requirement for the Sixth Form of 5A*-C with Grade B in all subjects to be taken as AS and A Levels.

Yours sincerely,

Dawn Harris Headteacher

Almuñécar International School

Introduction

Almuñecar International School was founded in 1989 by a small group of highly motivated Spanish parents who wanted a distinct form of education for their children, and an alternative to the limited options available in the area. Since then the school has grown rapidly and gained full authorisation as a Primary and Secondary school offering education in English and Spanish to pupils in the 3 – 18 age range.

At Almuñécar International School students are prepared, at 16 for the A.Q.A. G.C.S.E. examinations and, at 18, for the G.C.E. Advanced Level examinations. As the school is an authorised centre, our pupils´ studies are fully recognised by the Spanish and British authorities through a system of “homologacion”. This enables pupils at the school to learn in an international context and the education they receive prepares them for adult life in a rapidly changing world. Although the pupil population comprises many different nationalities and backgrounds we pride ourselves on forming a cohesive community. Great emphasis is placed on mutual understanding and communication. For that reason, the teaching of English and Spanish is of paramount importance.

ALMUÑECAR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Curriculum

The pupils of Almuñécar International School follow, in general terms, the English National Curriculum. The curriculum covers the major areas of English, Mathematics, Science, the Humanities, the Arts and Physical education. In the Upper Primary school pupils also begin the study of a third language, French or German. Due to the special nature of the school, the pupils follow Spanish and Social Studies according to the objectives of the Spanish National Curriculum.

The Primary Curriculum The main emphasis in the primary curriculum, especially during the early years of school, is on the teaching of Numeracy, Oracy and Literacy. In both mathematics and reading, the staff make use of well-known teaching schemes, supplemented by other materials and activities. Similarly, in Spanish the pupils follow well-established courses which provide a structured approach to language learning. Several other subject areas are integrated within the topics studied by the children. As the pupils become older, greater emphasis is placed on individual subjects in order to prepare them fully for secondary education and the examination system.

All subjects, except for languages, are taught in English, this intensive experience enabling non-English children to learn the language quickly. Non Spanish pupils are taught Spanish as a Foreign Language during the five lessons a week when Lengua y Sociales are being taught.

Planning, Assessment. Monitoring and Reporting

The teachers carefully plan the children’s work according to the school’s curriculum objectives and the needs of each individual child. Every unit of work is designed to help children acquire particular knowledge and skills and experience a broad range of activities and teaching approaches. Teachers respond to pupils´ individual learning needs and are sensitive to personal and social concerns. Older students also receive advice and support relating to university study and careers.

Careful monitoring and regular assessment by staff help to ensure that pupils make appropriate progress and learn effectively. Parents are encouraged to visit the school and are kept informed through formal consultation meetings and pupil reports. Progress reports are issued every half-term. Teachers keep their own records of pupils’ progress using National Curriculum levels and we use SATs at the end of Key Stages for our own school purposes. In Secondary we are introducing the NFER Cognitive Achievement tests and the University of Durham YELLIS tests to determine potential and aptitude. On an individual basis, significant concerns over either academic progress or behaviour are immediately communicated to parents. In the secondary school we encourage each pupil to assess his/her own progress, maintain records and negotiate targets with the subject teachers. Each class tutor supports the pupils in this programme. Secondary pupils have a homework diary which helps them organise their studies effectively and gives parents an opportunity to oversee their homework and pass on comments to staff. This partnership between home and school is vital to the school’s success, helping both to create a happy, secure environment for the children and a high level of academic achievement .

The Head of Primary oversees progress in the lower school but in Secondary, responsibility is divided between 3 Keystage Heads, in charge of Years 7 to 9 10 to 11 and the Sixth Form. The Technical Director is responsible for the Spanish Department two levels and once students meet the Spanish educational requirements she will proceed to make arrangements so their British studies are recognised by Spanish Ministry of Education.

Extra-Curricular Activities at AIS

We believe it is important for the students to have learning experiences which go well beyond the everyday curriculum. Staff organise visits to local places or events of interest in order to give the pupils direct experience of history, culture, geographical features or local industry. Recent examples include visits to London, Paris, Malaga, Granada and Benalmádena. In Spring a ski week is organised in .

Sport and leisure activities are playing an increasingly important part in the school’s life. Our sports area provides space for basketball, hockey, volleyball and football. We also have close contact with several local clubs and recent initiatives include after-school Tennis, basketball, football and rugby coaching, music, dance and drama. These are sometimes dependent on outside specialists being available.

Pupils are encouraged to be sensitive to the needs of other people and take part in activities which have provided money and educational materials for a school in Cuba, Cancer Care in Spain, and local poor children at Christmas. The Sixth Form have ongoing fund-raising activities for various charities and recently helped to furnish a school for children with cerebral palsy in Nepal.

Pupils from year 10 upward participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme at Bronze, and levels. They have walked and done expeditions in the Sierra behind , the peaks of Sierra Nevada and the Pilgrims´ route in the north of Spain. Their Service activities have included helping in Primary and various organizations outside school. Social events to raise funds for the school and to provide opportunities for parents to meet in a relaxed environment are organized once or twice a year.

Discipline The school aims to provide a happy, safe and caring environment in which students can learn effectively and develop as individuals. In return we expect high standards of work and behaviour from our pupils. They are encouraged to accept responsibility, to understand other people’s points of view and to look after others. To achieve these aims, students are required to follow a code of conduct, which is published in the school. The disciplinary system is clearly defined and made known to parents and pupils. Students are expected to be helpful and polite to everyone in the school and visitors. They must always show respect to members of staff and to each other. They must look after the building, the environment and one another’s property. Fighting, swearing and hurtful behaviour of any kind are not acceptable at the school. Students are expected to behave in a quiet and orderly manner during lessons, as they move around the school and at lunchtime. They are not allowed into the building before 10:00 a.m. and can only enter the school during break-times with the permission of teachers. Students must not bring any dangerous items to school, for example knives and matches. They should not bring items of value, mobile telephones, toys or money to school. Any items brought to school are the responsibility of parents. Sweets and chewing gum are not allowed in school. Students may bring fruit or a few biscuits for the morning break. The appearance of students should not be made particularly noticeable through hair colour/style, jewellery or piercing. Judgement of this is at the discretion of the director. In the playground, which is always under teachers’ supervision, students are expected to play sensibly and to avoid dangerous games or activities. Serious breaches of discipline will lead to pupils being excluded from school. Smoking, leaving school without permission or bullying will be punished with temporary suspension. Pupils bringing drugs into school or threatening staff will be excluded permanently.

We expect parents to support us in implementing this code, as we believe that discipline is the joint responsibility of parents and teachers. The Director will inform parents of any disciplinary problems. Through courtesy, kindness and respect we can all help to maintain a successful and happy community.

Facilities

The school enjoys a beautiful setting with extensive views overlooking the sea, the mountains with their terraced hillsides, and the town of Almuñécar. The school building has an attractive interior which has been significantly adapted and tailored to suit the children’s needs. There are, at present, thirteen secondary and eight primary classrooms, which are bright and well furnished, seminar rooms for study and practical work, an Art-room, two Information Technology rooms, three newly furnished laboratories and a Library each for Primary and Secondary.

The school library contains an increasing range of both fiction and non-fiction in Spanish and English, while the I.T. room has a range of modern computer and media facilities. There is an all-weather sports pitch for football and hockey and basket-ball and volley-ball courts.

In the school’s short history the facilities have been skilfully extended and further building expansion is planned for the near future. These pleasant surroundings, together with the small teaching groups, help to create a calm yet stimulating learning environment for the children.

The School Calendar

The school calendar follows the European pattern of long summer holidays of two months and breaks at Christmas, Easter and at half-terms. The school day for pupils is from 10 a.m. to 5 p. m. There is a twenty minute break in the morning, and an hour for lunch. After school activities are organised during the week, but do not go beyond 6.00 p.m.

Lunch is provided for all pupils at the school. The three-course meals, which are prepared in our own kitchen, are varied and well balanced and include a vegetarian option. Students eat communally under staff supervision in the dining hall. Packed lunches are not allowed.

Transport is available, on designated school bus routes, to and from school. Coach services are provided from Almuñécar, , Nerja, Torrox-Costa, Salobreña and with regular stopping points along the route.
