We hope that this brochure will provide you with the information you need and give you some idea of the school’s special character. We are a successful and rapidly expanding establishment which has full authorisation from both the British and the Spanish authorities. Our aim is to provide an excellent all-round education for pupils in a secure and stimulating environment. We have a team of dedicated, well-qualified teachers and able support staff. The school also benefits from a splendid setting and comfortable, attractive facilities. Since the school was founded in 1989 much has been achieved. The school population has now reached over 250 pupils. Our maximum capacity is around 350. We continually strive to improve the quality of what we offer.. In addition to bright, airy classrooms with computer facilities and several with audio-visual equipment, facilities include Primary and Secondary libraries, outdoor sports areas ,two secondary computer rooms, Primary computer facilities, three Science laboratories, a Sixth Form study area and a kitchen and dining hall. For a relatively small school we offer a wide range of optional subjects for pupils to choose from at GCSE and A-level. As a member of the National Association of British Schools in Spain this school is authorised to deliver the National Curriculum and all these lessons, with the obvious exception of Modern Languages, are delivered in English. We also have authorisation from the Spanish education authorities to teach the core subjects of the Spanish curriculum (Lengua and Sociales/ Conocimiento del Medio) and these with the National Curriculum subjects meet the legal requirements for compulsory education in Spain. At the end of their education our students can apply with confidence to universities in England, Spain and worldwide. This brochure can only afford you a brief glimpse of the school’s life. If you would like to know more, I strongly recommend that you visit the school and see the staff and pupils at work. A telephone call is all that is required to arrange a conducted tour of the school. We are an all-ability school, with a selection policy based primarily on interview and a satisfactory behavioural record. We do have a minimum requirement for the Sixth Form of 5A*-C with Grade B in all subjects to be taken as AS and A Levels. Yours sincerely, Dawn Harris Headteacher ALMUÑECAR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL IS FULLY RECOGNISED ACCORDING TO THE ROYAL DECREE 80611993 AND BY THE GOVERNMENT OF ANDALUCIA (BOJA Nº 133, 19th OCTOBER, 1995, FOR AGES 3-16, 24th MAY, 1997, FOR AGES 3-18) THE SCHOOL IS A MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH SCHOOLS IN SPAIN (NABBS) AND IS AUTHORIZED BY THE BRITISH COUNCIL TO OPERATE AS A BRITISH SCHOOL IN SPAIN. D.Harris (Director) Sra. Fiona Jacobs (Head of Primary) Almuñécar International School Introduction Almuñecar International School was founded in 1989 by a small group of highly motivated Spanish parents who wanted a distinct form of education for their children, and an alternative to the limited options available in the area. Since then the school has grown rapidly and gained full authorisation as a Primary and Secondary school offering education in English and Spanish to pupils in the 3 – 18 age range. At Almuñécar International School students are prepared, at 16 for the A.Q.A. G.C.S.E. examinations and, at 18, for the G.C.E. Advanced Level examinations. As the school is an authorised centre, our pupils´ studies are fully recognised by the Spanish and British authorities through a system of “homologacion”. This enables pupils at the school to learn in an international context and the education they receive prepares them for adult life in a rapidly changing world. Although the pupil population comprises many different nationalities and backgrounds we pride ourselves on forming a cohesive community. Great emphasis is placed on mutual understanding and communication. For that reason, the teaching of English and Spanish is of paramount importance. Aims and Objectives of the School “ We aim to provide a happy learning environment where pupils and teachers are proud of their achievements” By : Providing a happy, stimulating, secure and calm environment for children and everyone involved with the school. Fostering consideration and respect for others within a multicultural context. Providing a broad and balanced dual curriculum, leading to internationally recognised examination courses. Promoting varied and appropriate approaches to teaching and learning. Maintaining a code of good behaviour and a disciplined approach to learning. Encouraging self-reliance. Creating a cohesive school community. So that: Students are motivated and learn happily and effectively. Students are self-disciplined, courteous and considerate. Students make appropriate progress and fulfil their potential. Students are equipped to live successfully in a rapidly changing society. Students develop a life-long interest in learning and culture. ALMUÑECAR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Curriculum The pupils of Almuñécar International School follow, in general terms, the English National Curriculum. The curriculum covers the major areas of English, Mathematics, Science, the Humanities, the Arts and Physical education. In the Upper Primary school pupils also begin the study of a third language, French or German. Due to the special nature of the school, the pupils follow Spanish and Social Studies according to the objectives of the Spanish National Curriculum. The Primary Curriculum The main emphasis in the primary curriculum, especially during the early years of school, is on the teaching of Numeracy, Oracy and Literacy. In both mathematics and reading, the staff make use of well-known teaching schemes, supplemented by other materials and activities. Similarly, in Spanish the pupils follow well-established courses which provide a structured approach to language learning. Several other subject areas are integrated within the topics studied by the children. As the pupils become older, greater emphasis is placed on individual subjects in order to prepare them fully for secondary education and the examination system. All subjects, except for languages, are taught in English, this intensive experience enabling non-English children to learn the language quickly. Non Spanish pupils are taught Spanish as a Foreign Language during the five lessons a week when Lengua y Sociales are being taught. Planning, Assessment. Monitoring and Reporting The teachers carefully plan the children’s work according to the school’s curriculum objectives and the needs of each individual child. Every unit of work is designed to help children acquire particular knowledge and skills and experience a broad range of activities and teaching approaches. Teachers respond to pupils´ individual learning needs and are sensitive to personal and social concerns. Older students also receive advice and support relating to university study and careers. Careful monitoring and regular assessment by staff help to ensure that pupils make appropriate progress and learn effectively. Parents are encouraged to visit the school and are kept informed through formal consultation meetings and pupil reports. Progress reports are issued every half-term. Teachers keep their own records of pupils’ progress using National Curriculum levels and we use SATs at the end of Key Stages for our own school purposes. In Secondary we are introducing the NFER Cognitive Achievement tests and the University of Durham YELLIS tests to determine potential and aptitude. On an individual basis, significant concerns over either academic progress or behaviour are immediately communicated to parents. In the secondary school we encourage each pupil to assess his/her own progress, maintain records and negotiate targets with the subject teachers. Each class tutor supports the pupils in this programme. Secondary pupils have a homework diary which helps them organise their studies effectively and gives parents an opportunity to oversee their homework and pass on comments to staff. This partnership between home and school is vital to the school’s success, helping both to create a happy, secure environment for the children and a high level of academic achievement . The Head of Primary oversees progress in the lower school but in Secondary, responsibility is divided between 3 Keystage Heads, in charge of Years 7 to 9 10 to 11 and the Sixth Form. The Technical Director is responsible for the Spanish Department two levels and once students meet the Spanish educational requirements she will proceed to make arrangements so their British studies are recognised by Spanish Ministry of Education. Examination Courses Almuñecar International School is authorised as an examination centre by the main English Examination Boards and we enter students for examinations

  • La Alhambra in Granada, One of the Most Beautiful and Admired Monuments in the Wold
La Alhambra in Granada, one of the most beautiful and admired monuments in the wold. An old legend says that the Alhambra was built by night, in the light of torches. Its reddish dawn did believe the people of Grenada that the color was like the strength of the blood. The Alhambra, a monument of Granada for Spain and the world. La Alhambra was so called because of its reddish walls (in Arabic, («qa'lat al-Hamra'» means Red Castle ). It is located on top of the hill al-Sabika, on the left bank of the river Darro, to the west of the city of Granada and in front of the neighbourhoods of the Albaicin and of the Alcazaba. The Alhambra is one of the most serenely sensual and beautiful buildings in the world, a place where Moorish art and architecture reached their pinnacle. A masterpiece for you to admire, and it is in Granada, a city full of culture and history. Experience the beauty and admire this marvel of our architectural heritage. Let it touch your heart. Granada is the Alhambra and the gardens, the Cathedral, the Royal Chapel, convents and monasteries, the old islamic district Albayzin where the sunset is famous in the world or the Sacromonte where the gypsies perform flamenco shows in the caves where they used to live...Granada is this and many more things. The Alhambra is located on a strategic point in Granada city, with a view over the whole city and the meadow ( la Vega ), and this fact leads to believe that other buildings were already on that site before the Muslims arrived.

  • Granada Syllabus
Ethnic Studies 190 Summer Session A (Granada, Spain) University of California, Berkeley Al-Andalus: Islam in Spain and Construction of Otherness From 711 to 1492 and Beyond Professor Hatem Bazian ( [email protected] ) and Professor Ramon Grosfoguel ([email protected] ) Summer Travel Course Units: 6 Units Course Description: Spain’s relationship with Islam is extremely important to the development of Spanish and European culture in general. It is accurate to state that what we think of as typically “Spanish” has its roots in Islam and in the early history of Muslim arrival into the Iberian Peninsula beginning in 711 and lasting, in many different ways, to the present. Europe’s construction of Muslim otherness can be traced to this formative period with emphasis on difference in belief, social and ethical norms as well as the emergence of racial theory. Tracing the developments from the early 8th century to the 15th century and beyond through an examination of a variety of sources as well as hands-on exploration of elements dating to this formative period and beyond. For some 700 years, the Iberian Peninsula (today Spain and Portugal) was a Muslim country, called al-Andalus, where a uniquely sophisticated and luxurious culture flourished when the rest of Europe was living in relative poverty and ignorance. Although the Muslim political presence in Spain came to an end in 1492 with the defeat of the Kingdom of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand, the last Muslims did not leave Spain until 1614. The course will introduce the students to Islam and the ideas that shaped the early development in the Iberian Peninsula around 711 and continuing with a systematic presentation of unfolding political, social, intellectual, economic, architectural, and cultural events that made al-Andalus, which continue to cast a profound shadow on the present.

1908 Puerto de Motril A.I.E. Recinto Portuario s/n 18613 Motril (Granada) Motril - Granada In just 45 minutes, we will go from 0 meters above sea level in Motril to 800 meters in Granada, using the ancient Arab track that is nowadays a modern highway. In our journey we will be able to see cliffs and natural passes between water and mountains. We will have a panoramic view of Sierra Nevada and at its slopes La Alpujarra on one side and Lecrin Valley on the other, all emblematic places with typical Andalusian charm. A perfect journey start … The inland monumental city of Granada, one of the cities with the richest history and culture in the world, offers many interesting places to visit, among which we cannot forget the Alhambra Palace, which is Spain’s most visited attraction. Motril enjoys a microclimate that allows the growth of tropical fruits; in fact, average temperature is above 20 degrees Celsius more than 300 days per year! The history of the sugar cane is very connected with the city of Motril, not just because the sugar production has been really important in the past (it was called the sweet gold), but also because Motril and its area have seen the sugar brought by the Arabs from the far east, and have then helped this cultivation to move towards the Canary Islands and the New World: the Americas. Given its proximity to so many inviting places and the rich gastronomy of the area, the range of options at a relatively short distance is immense … admire the landscape of the Alpujarras, with picturesque villages such as Lanjarón, Orgiva, Pampaneira, Bubión or Trevélez, all of extreme beauty and with great gastronomical tradition.
