  • Chapter 3 – Affected Environment
Glen Canyon Dam Long-Term Experimental and Management Plan October 2016 Final Environmental Impact Statement 3 AFFECTED ENVIRONMENT Chapter 3 describes the environmental resources (physical, biological, cultural, recreational, and socioeconomic) that could be affected by the range of alternatives for implementing the Glen Canyon Dam Long-Term Experimental and Management Plan (LTEMP), as described in Chapters 1 and 2. The extent to which each specific resource may be affected by each alternative is discussed in Chapter 4, Environmental Consequences.1 3.1 PROJECT AREA The project area includes the area potentially affected by implementation of the LTEMP (including normal management and experimental operations of Glen Canyon Dam and non-flow actions). This area includes Lake Powell, Glen Canyon Dam, and the river downstream to Lake Mead (Figure 3.1-1). More specifically, the scope primarily encompasses the Colorado River Ecosystem, which includes the Colorado River mainstream corridor and interacting resources in associated riparian and terrace zones, located primarily from the forebay of Glen Canyon Dam to the western boundary of Grand Canyon National Park (GCNP). It includes the area where dam operations impact physical, biological, recreational, cultural, and other resources. This section of the river runs through Glen, Marble, and Grand Canyons in Coconino and Mohave Counties in northwestern Arizona. Although this EIS focuses primarily on the Colorado River Ecosystem, the affected area varies by resources and extends outside of the immediate river corridor for some resources and cumulative impacts. Portions of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (GCNRA), GCNP, and Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA) outside the Colorado River Ecosystem are also included in the affected region for certain resources due to the potential effects of LTEMP operations.

  • Selling Marvel's Cinematic Superheroes
Stream: Culture/Politics/Technology 2016, Vol 8(2), 23-35 © The Author(s), 2016 http://journals.sfu.ca/stream Selling Marvel’s Cinematic Superheroes through Militarization Brett Pardy School of Communication Simon Fraser University Abstract The Marvel comics film adaptations have been some of the most successful Hollywood products of the post 9/11 period, bringing formerly obscure cultural texts into the mainstream. Through an analysis of the adaptation process of Marvel Entertainment’s superhero franchise from comics to film, I argue that militarization has been used by Hollywood as a discursive formation with which to transform niche properties into mass market products. I consider the locations of narrative ambiguities in two key comics texts, The Ultimates (2002-2007) and The New Avengers (2005-2012), as well as in the film The Avengers (2011), and demonstrate the significant reorientation towards the military of the film franchise. While Marvel had attempted to produce film adaptations for decades, only under the new “militainment” discursive formation was it finally successful. I argue that superheroes are malleable icons, known largely by the public by their image and perhaps general character traits rather than their narratives. Militainment is introduced through a discourse of realism provided by Marvel Studios as an indicator that the property is not just for children. Keywords: militarization, popular film, comic books, adaptation 1. Introduction Nick Fury, head of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division (S.H.I.E.L.D) tells his team of assembled superheroes: “there was an idea… called the Avengers Initiative. The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people, see if they could become something more.

  • The Gospel According to Marvel
CHRISTIAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE PO Box 8500, Charlotte, NC 28271 Feature Article: JAF1383 THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARVEL by John McAteer This article first appeared in the CHRISTIAN RESEARCH JOURNAL, volume 38, number 03 (2015). For further information or to subscribe to the CHRISTIAN RESEARCH JOURNAL, go to: http://www.equip.org/christian-research-journal/. SYNOPSIS Over the past decade, there has been a revival of interest in comic book superheroes, driven in large part by the Disney-owned Marvel Comics brand, publishers of such characters as Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Avengers, and more. Every culture has had its own heroes, from Hercules to King Arthur to the Lone Ranger, but the phenomenal popularity of Marvel superheroes in recent years suggests that Marvel’s unique approach to envisioning heroism is, for better or worse, feeding some sort of spiritual hunger in American culture. In the 1960s, Marvel transformed the entire comic book industry by introducing heroes who were ordinary people that found themselves with unique abilities and struggled to overcome personal weaknesses to use those abilities for the benefit of those in need. Marvel’s attempt to ground their heroes in a more realistic world than other superheroes led to at least two questionable results. First, the Marvel universe tends to avoid genuinely supernatural phenomena, instead explaining unusual events in science fiction terms. Second, as popular culture has coarsened in the decades since the 1960s, Marvel’s flawed heroes have had to become more violent to maintain their apparent psychological realism. This means that comic books are now less appropriate for children than they were in the past.

  • Superheroes & Stereotypes: a Critical Analysis of Race, Gender, And
SUPERHEROES & STEREOTYPES: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF RACE, GENDER, AND SOCIAL ISSUES WITHIN COMIC BOOK MATERIAL Gabriel Arnoldo Cruz A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2018 Committee: Alberto González, Advisor Eric Worch Graduate Faculty Representative Joshua Atkinson Frederick Busselle Christina Knopf © 2018 Gabriel Arnoldo Cruz All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Alberto González, Advisor The popularity of modern comic books has fluctuated since their creation and mass production in the early 20th century, experiencing periods of growth as well as decline. While commercial success is not always consistent from one decade to the next it is clear that the medium has been and will continue to be a cultural staple in the society of the United States. I have selected this type of popular culture for analysis precisely because of the longevity of the medium and the recent commercial success of film and television adaptations of comic book material. In this project I apply a Critical lens to selected comic book materials and apply Critical theories related to race, class, and gender in order to understand how the materials function as vehicles for ideological messages. For the project I selected five Marvel comic book characters and examined materials featuring those characters in the form of comic books, film, and television adaptations. The selected characters are Steve Rogers/Captain America, Luke Cage, Miles Morales/Spider-Man, Jean Grey, and Raven Darkholme/Mystique. Methodologically I interrogated the selected texts through the application of visual and narrative rhetorical criticism.

It was submitted to the faculty of The Honors College and was accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences. SUPERVISORY COMMITTEE: ___________________________ Dr. Christopher B. Dr. Chris Strain, for consistently telling me that all of my drafts needed more work, that my research was scant, and that I needed to re-work everything, thank you. If you’d told me I was doing fine, I probably would have taken a nacho break for a semester and been in serious trouble. To Dr. Laura Barrett, for reading over the final draft and adding a layer of polish that would have otherwise been absent. And to the entire staff of the Honors College, for making me so nervous that all I’ve ever tried to do is not look silly in your eyes… hopefully accomplishing something in the process.

  • Debating the Sokovia Accords
Debating the Sokovia Accords Five College Model United Nations Mach 6th-8th, 2020 Letter from the Director Dear Delegates, I am very excited to welcome you to the 13th annual Five College Model United Nations conference. My name is Emma Stoll, and I will be your Crisis Director for the committee devoted to Debating the Sokovia Accords. For introduction purposes, I am a sophomore at Mount Holyoke College who is originally from Hampden, Massachusetts. I have participated in Model UN for three years during high school, in which I was a part of the Legal Committee, Human Rights Council, and Security Council. I am currently majoring in Psychology with a minor in Sociology, but I have a depth of other interests that includes Art, Film, and International Relations. Outside of Model UN, I am passionate about comic books, musicals, and all types of music. The concept for this crisis committee emerged due to details that had vexed me personally ever since watching Captain America: Civil War. The Sokovia Accords in this movie are the cinematic universe’s adaptation of the Superhero Registration Act, which was a comic premise about regulating enhanced individuals that originated in Uncanny X-Men #181. However, as an avid fan of the United Nations and it’s principles, I was annoyed that such an unjust and blatant violation of the Declaration of Human Rights could exist. The accords permit any and all enhanced individuals to be detained without trial, and subjected to a number of human rights violations which are justified under the pretense of ensuring security.

  • A Brief History of Superheroes on TV – Broadening and Diversifying Appeal by Steve Sternberg
September 2021 #117 __________________________________________________________________________________________ _____ A Brief History of Superheroes on TV – Broadening and Diversifying Appeal By Steve Sternberg Superheroes and sci-fi are more popular than ever, as anyone who attends the giant annual comic-cons in San Diego (July) and New York (October) can attest. They both consistently draw 150,000 attendees or more. There are also numerous smaller comic-con events throughout the country, ranging anywhere from a few thousand to 100,000+ attendees. Once considered niche, with very limited appeal, these have become major pop-culture events – but still have a strong focus on sci-fi and superheroes. DC’s Batman and Wonder Woman movies, as well as Marvel’s many mega- successful cinematic efforts, which began with Captain America and the Avengers, have shown that there are large audiences for these stories. The trick has become appealing to the hard-core fans who are well-versed in more than 60 years of comic-book canon, as well as new fans with only a passing or no familiarity with the characters’ backstories or superhero mythology. A Sternberg Report Sponsored Message The Sternberg Report ©2021 __________________________________________________________________________________________ _____ From the earliest days of television, series featuring superheroes have had their ups and downs. While occasionally popping up in the 1960s through early 2000s, most often as one network tried to counter-program and appeal to a younger audience, the creation of the CW network, along with the advent of streaming platforms, and the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has led to a rebirth of the superhero genre.
