JUNE 2020 Darlington Building Society NYSD NORTH YORKSHIRE AND SOUTH DURHAM NEWSLETTER ECB PREMIER CRICKET LEAGUE Founded 1892 A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS No apologies for headlining our second lockdown newsletter with the magnificent Marske CC mural which was included in an ECB presentation to every county in the country in mid-May — the topic was ‘cricket connecting communities and improving lives’. In the following pages we devote some well-deserved space to a few of our clubs who have inspiring stories to tell, and we also include a story about a local cricket fanatic who has been involved on the NHS frontline. Our first newsletter was issued on what would have been the opening day of the 2020 season — since then the May Bank Holidays have come and gone with the ECB suspension of all recre- ational cricket still in place and uncertainty as to when, if at all, we might get a start, although as we write small steps are being taken out of lockdown, offering a glimmer of hope. The League provided clarity to their clubs from the outset of the crisis via contingency plans that have proved remarkably prescient — they remain as relevant as the day they were issued, and provide some guidance about what NYSD cricket may look like if and when the green light is eventually given. Inside this issue: Through This Test Together 2 SUMMER’S HERE !! Around the World 3 Oh the irony! Going the extra mile 3 Of course there are vastly more important things at this time, but cricket lovers aching for the game to re-start can- Cummings and goings 3 not help but reflect on the glorious weather in April and May — better than the vast majority of us can ever remember.

  • Sussex V. Durham Specsavers County Championship - Division Two Arundel Castle Cricket Ground Wednesday 20Th – Friday 22Nd June 2018
Sussex v. Durham Specsavers County Championship - Division Two Arundel Castle Cricket Ground Wednesday 20th – Friday 22nd June 2018 Day One It was late on Tuesday evening when Sussex Academy graduate Tom Haines received the unexpected call to play in the Specsavers County Championship Division Two match against Durham. He had played only two championship matches before, both in 2016, when he scored 12 runs in three innings as a 17-year-old, so he must have felt he was making his debut all over again. But the 19-year-old left-hander – called in to replace England Lions call-up Chris Jordan - responded by scoring a memorable maiden first-class century at Arundel Castle Cricket Ground, featuring in a record second-wicket stand of 244 in 54 overs with Phil Salt as Sussex piled up 439-5. Salt also scored his maiden ton at this level as the pair celebrated beating Sussex's previous record second-wicket stand against Durham of 196 between Bill Athey and Alan Wells at Hove in 1996 - before either of today's centurions were born! Before the match the Sussex head coach Jason Gillespie has asked his top five to improve on what had been a disappointing start to the season. “We haven’t quite nailed it in the top five,” he said. Sussex went into this game with their batting averages led by all-rounder David Wiese. And they were also without highly rated Stiaan van Zyl, who is missing this match with a knee injury. But Gillespie could not have envisaged this response from a Sussex side, even though they were batting on a relaid and flat looking surface.

Durham Jets vs. Sussex Sharks Vitality Blast, Quarter-Final Emirates Riverside, Chester-le-Street. Friday 24th August 2018. Sussex Sharks secured their first Vitality Blast Finals Day appearance since 2012 by defeating the Durham Jets in their quarter-final clash by five wickets at Emirates Riverside. Fine bowling performances from Danny Briggs and Will Beer restricted the home side to 140 from their 20 overs, with Ben Stokes top scoring with 34 after the Jets opted to bat first. Although Durham made early inroads, Laurie Evans and Delray Rawlins were outstanding, with the former notching a composed half-century, to guide Sussex to a convincing victory. The Jets made a blistering start to their innings with Stokes and Graham Clark at the crease. Stokes led the assault, which included striking four boundaries off Jofra Archer's first over. Chris Jordan used his nous to make the breakthrough, sending a slower ball down to dismiss Clark, who was well caught by Rawlins Sussex began to dry up the runs after Durham's early surge. Stokes paid the price for an ambitious reverse sweep off Beer falling lbw for 34. The pressure of the Sharks' spin bowlers paid dividends when Briggs trapped Tom Latham lbw for 16, while Paul Collingwood's advance down the track resulted in him being clean bowled by Beer. Briggs dropped Will Smith early in his third over, but when presented with a second opportunity he made a fine grab to leave the home side 92-5. Ryan Davies ended the Jets' boundary drought of 10 overs with a clip into the legside, but was then undone by a slower ball from Archer after guiding Durham past the 100-run mark.

  • Sussex CCC Vs Durham CCC Specsavers County Championship – Division Two the 1St Central County Ground, Hove Monday 24Th – Thursday 27Th June 2019
Sussex CCC vs Durham CCC Specsavers County Championship – Division Two The 1st Central County Ground, Hove Monday 24th – Thursday 27th June 2019 Day One Chris Jordan had Durham on the rocks at 90 for 5 on the first day of the Specsavers County Championship match at The 1st Central County Ground before a Cameron Bancroft century put the visitors back on course, steering them to 259 without futher loss at the close. After electing to bat first, Durham's opening partnership lasted just seven deliveries before Alex Lees sliced his attempted cover drive off Jordan to Harry Finch at backward-point. There were just 7.2 overs in the morning because of persistent light rain. When play resumed after lunch Sussex took control. Aaron Thomason took his maiden first-class wicket when he had Gareth Harte, driving, caught by Stiaan van Zyl at extra-cover. That made it 64-2 in the 22nd over. Then Jordan shook Durham with a spell of three wickets in eight balls without conceding a run. First, he caught Jack Burnham by surprise with one that bounced and seamed sharply away, for Ben Brown to take a regulation catch behind the wicket. There were two more for the England man in his next over. First he swung one away from Graham Clark, who pushed forward and was caught by Laurie Evans at second slip. Then, three balls later, Liam Trevaskis was also defeated by late away swing and was lbw without scoring. But then Bancroft and Ned Eckersley put on an unbroken stand of 169.
