News and events promoted by UPCOMING EVENT - MUSIC / CONFERENCE / EXHIBITION 16 – 17 March Sacher Perspectives: a Celebration of Paul Sacher in Cardiff Cardiff University and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales at BBC Hoddinott Hall, Wales Millennium Centre are hosting a unique season-long collaboration for the first UK celebration of the legacy and achievement of legendary Swiss conductor, impresario and champion of new music Paul Sacher. The Cardiff Sacher Series features works commissioned by Paul Sacher and composers closely associated with The Sacher Foundation in Basel. The season climaxes on 16-17 March with the live BBC Radio 3 broadcast concert, the Sacher Perspectives international conference and exhibition from the Paul Sacher Foundation. 16 March, 7.00 pm BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Thierry Fischer A BBC Radio 3 live broadcast concert of music commissioned by the Swiss conductor and champion of new music Paul Sacher. The works range from the airy gracefulness of Stravinsky's Concerto and the atmospheric textures of Lutosławski's Double Concerto (for oboe and harp) through to the charm of Frank Martin and the powerful Fourth Symphony of Honegger. Swiss conductor Thierry Fischer is Music Director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra. 2011/12 is also his sixth and final season as Principal Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Acknowledging the legacy of Paul Sacher, the conference will explore issues arising from the investigation of sources housed at the Sacher Foundation, the richest repository of compositional materials in the world, and consider how manuscripts, sketches, correspondence and other material opens up the way we think about the music of composers in the collections, and about source study in general. Sacher Perspectives: Exhibition 16 – 17 March Cardiff University, School of Music An exhibition of facsimile material from the Paul Sacher Foundation will be on display at The School of Music, Cardiff University during the conference and will be formally opened by HE Mr Anton Thalmann, Swiss Ambassador to the UK on 16 March.
