News and events promoted by UPCOMING EVENT - MUSIC / CONFERENCE / EXHIBITION 16 – 17 March Sacher Perspectives: a Celebration of Paul Sacher in Cardiff Cardiff University and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales at BBC Hoddinott Hall, Wales Millennium Centre are hosting a unique season-long collaboration for the first UK celebration of the legacy and achievement of legendary Swiss conductor, impresario and champion of new music Paul Sacher. The Cardiff Sacher Series features works commissioned by Paul Sacher and composers closely associated with The Sacher Foundation in Basel. The season climaxes on 16-17 March with the live BBC Radio 3 broadcast concert, the Sacher Perspectives international conference and exhibition from the Paul Sacher Foundation. 16 March, 7.00 pm BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Thierry Fischer A BBC Radio 3 live broadcast concert of music commissioned by the Swiss conductor and champion of new music Paul Sacher. The works range from the airy gracefulness of Stravinsky's Concerto and the atmospheric textures of Lutosławski's Double Concerto (for oboe and harp) through to the charm of Frank Martin and the powerful Fourth Symphony of Honegger. Swiss conductor Thierry Fischer is Music Director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra. 2011/12 is also his sixth and final season as Principal Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Acknowledging the legacy of Paul Sacher, the conference will explore issues arising from the investigation of sources housed at the Sacher Foundation, the richest repository of compositional materials in the world, and consider how manuscripts, sketches, correspondence and other material opens up the way we think about the music of composers in the collections, and about source study in general. 9 A Will and a Way There were no guarantees that the Basle Chamber Orchestra’s life would be a long one.Although there were musicians interested in performing early and modern music, plenty of works for them to perform, and a conductor to lead them, there was no money. For nearly ten years, the musicians who played in the orchestra’s half- dozen or so concerts a year did so unpaid. Sacher, too, received no fee, but there were unavoidable expenses involved in the BKO’s development and concerts. There was the rent of performance venues. There were printing costs for tickets and programmes. There were publicity and administrative costs, and fees for hiring outside soloists and additional musicians when a work required brass or woodwind.All these costs had to be met, and initially the returns were small. The new orchestra and its performances of ‘new music’ did not have the support enjoyed by the city’s symphony orchestra.Not only were the latter’s concerts well attended, but they were subsidized by the machinery of the state-supported Basler Orchester Gesell- schaft (Basle Orchestra Society).‘At that time,’explained Curt Paul Janz in 1995,‘the work of contemporary composers was regarded by the directors of the Basle music societies, their orchestras and many of the concert-going public with total hostility.’ Potential conflict, however, was no deterrent to Sacher. ‘I see that I’ve begun a fight,’he had written to Lili Streiff – he was only nineteen, but already fully aware of his mission – ‘a task which is threatened by countless obstacles.

Chapel Hill 2012 Approved By, Brigid Cohen, chair Allen Anderson Annegret Fauser Mark Katz Severine Neff © 2012 Daniel Guberman ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT DANIEL GUBERMAN: Composing Freedom: Elliott Carter’s ‘Self-Reinvention’ and the Early Cold War (Under the direction of Brigid Cohen) In this dissertation I examine Elliott Carter’s development from the end of the Second World War through the 1960s arguing that he carefully constructed his postwar compositional identity for Cold War audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. The majority of studies of Carter’s music have focused on technical aspects of his methods, or roots of his thoughts in earlier philosophies. Making use of published writings, correspondence, recordings of lectures, compositional sketches, and a drafts of writings, this is one of the first studies to examine Carter’s music from the perspective of the contemporary cultural and political environment. In this Cold War environment Carter emerged as one of the most prominent composers in the United States and Europe. I argue that Carter’s success lay in part due to his extraordinary acumen for developing a public persona. And his presentation of his works resonated with the times, appealing simultaneously to concert audiences, government and private foundation agents, and music professionals including impresarios, performers and other composers.

Patron: Her Majesty the Queen Press Release For release: Friday 18 November 2011 Sir Mark Elder awarded Honorary Membership of the Royal Philharmonic Society Sir Mark Elder has been made an Honorary Member of the Royal Philharmonic Society in recognition of his outstanding services to music. A rare honour, the award has only been presented 129 times since the first honorary membership was made to Carl Maria von Weber in 1826. Sir Mark Elder is Music Director of the Hallé and works regularly with the world’s leading symphony orchestras, in the UK enjoying close associations with both the London Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He appears frequently in many of the most prominent international opera houses, including the Royal Opera House, the Metropolitan Opera New York, and the Opéra National de Paris and was the first British conductor to conduct a new production at the Bayreuth Festival. He previously won the prestigious RPS Music Award for Conductor in 2005. In its citation, the Council of the Royal Philharmonic Society says: The Royal Philharmonic Society is delighted to present Honorary Membership to Sir Mark Elder. This award celebrates his international recognition as one of the leading conductors of our day, but more particularly it is given in admiration of his cultural leadership. Over more than three decades he has carefully and systematically transformed the fortunes of two great British musical institutions. As musical director at English National Opera, and latterly with the Hallé, he has focused on fostering exceptional musical standards, creating pride at every level of these organisations and enthralling audiences with both the sheer impact of his music making and his passionate advocacy for music.

Both the composers’ musical decisions and the finished works’ critical and musicological reception demonstrate just how urgently the genre of opera was thought to be in crisis. Enabled by the myth of the “Stunde Null” or Zero Hour, many avant-garde composers shunned opera as artistically bankrupt and conservative, preferring instead genres that were less closely tied to the musical past. Opera’s coherence as a genre depended upon the maintenance and renewal of dramatic and musical conventions from eras both immediate and distant – a dependence that became politicized as the boundaries of “new music” were policed.

AN EXAMINATION OF COMPOSITIONAL STYLE AND CELLO TECHNIQUE IN 12 HOMMAGES Á PAUL SACHER by RYANE DUNNAGAN (Under the Direction of David Starkweather) ABSTRACT To celebrate the 70th birthday of Swiss conductor Paul Sacher, Mstislav Rostropovich commissioned twelve composers to write a works for solo cello based on Sacher’s last name. Rostropovich invited Conrad Beck, Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, Benjamin Britten, Henri Dutilleux, Wolfgang Fortner, Alberto Ginastera, Cristobal Halffter, Hans Werner Henze, Heinz Holliger, Klaus Huber, and Witold Lutoslawski to each write a variation for solo cello. All agreed and, with the exception of Berio and Henze, completed works in time for the premiere. Ten of the twelve compositions were performed by Rostropovich himself and were premiered on May 2nd, 1976 in Zürich, Switzerland. This document divides these works into three categories based on extended cello technique and compositional innovation and clarifies any notational and technical issues.
