Edmonton... Eight Alberta high school students will finish high school at campuses around the world thanks to Grant MacEwan United World College Scholarships. The Alberta students are from Calgary, Didsbury, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Spruce Grove and Widewater.

The scholarships, which are provided by the Government of Alberta, are valued at $70,000 each and are awarded in recognition of academic performance, citizenship, volunteerism and leadership. The scholarships cover two years of tuition and accommodations at United World College locations in , the United States, Norway, Italy and Hong Kong. “These students represent a new generation of Albertans that are taking our province forward with new energy and enthusiasm,” said Doug Horner, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology. “Completing your education away from home can be one of the most valuable life experiences an individual can undertake. I congratulate all of them as they begin this unique journey.” United World College is a British-based foundation that comprises 13 locations and has a network of more than 36,000 graduates. The scholarships are named in honour of Dr. John Walter (Grant) MacEwan who served as a Calgary Alderman, the Mayor of Calgary and a Member of the Legislative Assembly before being appointed Lieutenant Governor of Alberta in 1966. “I hope to learn to live in a foreign and international environment and to learn what I can accomplish with the skills it took me to get there. Through understanding my classmates and the community I will serve, I hope to learn better how to serve the world and be globally aware,” said Robert Adamson, who will be studying at the United World College campus in China. “I feel very honoured and I know the experience will be very rewarding, as will the opportunity to pay forward what I've been given.” For information on Alberta’s scholarship program, visit www.alis.gov.ab.ca. -30- Editor’s note: Students are available to speak to the media Date: Saturday, June 12 Time: 3 p.m. Location: Grant MacEwan University - City Centre Campus (Robbins Health Centre) Participants: Current and past recipients of United World College scholarships Backgrounder: 2010 United World College recipients Media inquiries may be directed to: Kevin Donnan Communications Alberta Advanced Education and Technology 780-427-0405 [email protected] To call toll free within Alberta dial 310-0000.
