SIGNS OF LIFE There were many signs of life in our parish last weekend. We tried some new things: Saturday night there was a meeting of the new Youth Ministry for Middle School students, as well as a Mass at Lake Forest High School for the beginning of the academic year. Sunday morning we had the premier of our expanded Religious Education program at the Primary Grade Center. There were also familiar sights and sounds, such as the many, many bags of groceries donated to help the food pantry in Waukegan and the sound of the parish choir at the 10:30am Mass. These are great signs of the Catholic faith being lived in our community. Deo gratias!
THAT THERE MAY BE PRIESTS This weekend we will take up a second collection in support of the seminaries of the Archdiocese of Chicago. The preparation of candidates for the priesthood requires an outstanding formation program both academically and spiritually. Thank you for supporting the men who are preparing to become priests and helping the work of the seminaries entrusted with their formation.
WELCOME! BIENVENIDO! Next Sunday, September 28 we will welcome back Archbishop Jose Antonio Eguren to St. Mary for the 10:30am Mass. The archbishop has been a friend of the priests and people of our parish for almost twenty years. A native of Lima, Archbishop Eguren is currently the Archbishop of Piura, located in northern Peru. Please join us on September 28.
THE FRONT PORCH The project of restoring the front porch of the church has been delayed due to the enormous amount of concrete that had to be removed. Everyone assumed that there was a mound of earth or sand beneath the porch; instead there were substantial concrete planks fitted into the façade. The project will be completed by the end of October, five weeks later than anticipated. I apologize for any inconvenience but trust that we will all be pleased with the finished product. Thank you.

Our guest speaker will be Judy Kohl, owner of the Mustard Seed Fair Trade Shop in Lake Forest. She has a very interesting personal story to tell (raised in Africa as a child of missionary parents) as well as the story of the Mustard Seed Shop. The Mustard Seed is a fair trade shop helping vendors and women in Africa earn a fair wage plus helping charities such as a Safe Place with donations from their profits. During this month we will again be participating in the Baby Bottle fundraiser to help women in difficult and unplanned pregnancy situations. At the end of all the Masses on the week-end of October 4-5, the Respect Life Committee will be distributing the baby bottles. We are asking that you take a bottle home, and fill it with a donation to Aid for Women. School of St. Mary Implementation of New Science Program at School of St. Mary Calendar of Events Research shows that students learn science best through hands-on interactions which allow them to actively construct basic knowledge, apply and analyze new September 22 understandings. For example students in grade 3 will be Confirmation Service Mtg learning the principles of motion of vehicles and then ultimately will redesign a car at 7:00pm in Church with K'NEX and look at how to save money in their design without sacrificing the Save the Date! effectiveness of the movement of the car. This type of science education will help November 8 prepare our students for STEM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Harvest Barn Dance Mathematics). Archbishop Eguren worked with Pope Francis when the Holy Father was Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
