Getting Started with the TOR in WebCT Vista

What is WebCT Vista?

WebCT Vista is a password-protected course management system. Most GSLIS professors use VISTA for course material retrieval, course discussions, online quizzes, a course calendar and grade posting. Each professor uses different aspects and functions of Vista.

WebCT Vista also provides access to the TOR.

Browser Check

Before logging in, we recommend that you do a browser check. Select the Run a Browser Check link to be sure that your browser is configured properly. You will be alerted to problems and receive suggestions for making changes to preferences as needed. For best results, we recommend using Internet Explorer as it is the browser most consistently supported by WebCT Vista.

You should also be sure that your browser is not blocking pop-ups. Each browser handles pop-up settings differently.

How to Allow Pop-ups in Vista

1. How do I set Internet Explorer to allow pop-ups? Pop-up Blocker is on by default.

Tools > Pop-Up Blocker > Turn Off Pop-Up Blocker

2. How do I set Mozilla to allow pop-ups?

MAC: Firefox > Preferences > Click on Web Features on the left hand side > Uncheck the Block Pop-up Windows box > Click OK

PC: Tools > Options >Web Features > Uncheck the Pop-up Windows box > Click OK

3. How do I set Netscape to allow pop-ups?

Tools > Pop-up Manager > Allow Pop-ups from this site

This information about pop-ups is also available at http://my.simmons.edu/gslis/techlab/howto-info.shtml on the GSLIS tech lab web site.

These handouts and more available online at GSLIS Tech Lab How To's - Download Center

Personal Network Folder vs. Personal Web Space

What’s the difference?

Network Folder • Every student has 100 megabytes of password-protected storage space on the file server. • This is your personal network folder. It is also referred to as “the Y: Drive” because that is how it shows up when you log into an on campus Dell computer.

On Windows computers, double- click here to open your network folder

On Mac computers, double-click here to open your You can also use the network folder N: drive, but it is public storage and anyone can read or delete files there.

• You are encouraged to save important files in your personal network folder, because it is regularly backed up and private. • You can access your network folder from any computer on campus and even from off campus. See Off Campus handout link below for instructions on remote access: http://my.simmons.edu/gslis/techlab/docs/remote_vpn.pdf

Web Space • Every student has 10 megabytes of space available to create her/his own web site on the Simmons web server. • This is COMPLETELY SEPARATE from your personal network folder • Files are moved into this space using an FTP client. See FTP and Your Simmons Web Space handout below for more details: http://my.simmons.edu/gslis/techlab/docs/FTP.pdf • Files uploaded to the Public folder in your web space are visible on the open web.

Note: Both these network services expire three months after you withdraw or graduate.

Checking Your Personal Web Space

1. Verifying Your Public_html Folder Status:

Click on the Start Button, then select Run, type telnet web.simmons.edu and hit OK.

Log in using your Simmons email username and email password. When you log in successfully, it will look like this:

At the $, type dir to see a listing of what folders are in your account, it should look similar to this:

If you see the public_html folder listed, then you are all set to start uploading files to your web space via FTP Commander. There is a handout for this application in the Download Center as well (http://my.simmons.edu/gslis/techlab/howto-info.shtml). If you don’t see that folder, it will need to be created.

2. Creating a public_html folder: (if necessary)

Type: "mkdir public_html" and press enter.

Now type "dir" again, and you should see "public_html" as an option.

It's very important that you name the file exactly as shown, or you won't be able to access your web page. Once you've created the public_html directory, you can type "exit" to close the black window. If you have any problems creating this, please contact the Tech Lab Assistant on duty or send an email to [email protected]

GSLIS Technology Group Last Revised: 1/17/06 Using FTP and Your Simmons Web Space

What’s it for? FTP stands for “” and is used to move files from one drive or server to another remote one like a web server. This is how you get images and html pages into your public folder, so they will be visible on your personal web site. There are many FTP applications available. The ones recommended here are already on the GSLIS Tech Lab computers, but below are instructions for setting them up on your own computer.

If your computer runs Windows . . . WinSCP is a free, open source FTP application. To download it onto your computer, follow these steps:

• Go to this URL: http://winscp.net/eng/download.php • Under WinSCP 3.7.6, click on Installation Package. • Click on any of the icons in the Download column (they are all the same.) • A new screen will say “Download will begin shortly…” • Next you will be prompted to save the installer. Save it to your computer, close your browser and double-click the installer to run it. • Leave all the defaults as you go through installation.

How To Connect You should now have a WinSCP shortcut on your desktop. Double-click it to open the application. To make a connection to your web space, match settings below in the “WinSCP Login” window and click “Login”:

Use your Simmons username and password After clicking “Connect,” you will see this warning window. Just click “Yes” and continue.

Transferring Files You should now be connected. The right side list shows the files already in your web space. The left side shows the directory from which you have chosen to move files. This might be your Y: drive, a CD, your personal computer’s hard drive, etc.

To copy a file from the Y:drive to your web space, just select and drag it over.

Anything you want to view on your personal web site must be copied to the “Public” folder of your web space

A window pops up to confirm that you do, indeed, want to copy the file to that location. Hit “copy” to make the transfer. Repeat with any other files you need to move to your web space.

GSLIS Technology Group last revised 9/1/2005 If your computer runs Mac OSX . . . Cyberduck is a freeware FTP application. To download onto your computer, follow these steps:

• Go to this URL: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/internet_utilities/cyberduck.html • Once installer is downloaded, double-click on it and follow installation instructions.

How To Connect Go to Applications > Cyberduck. Double-click to open the application. To make a connection to your web space, match settings below in the application window:

Choose SFTP to get a secure connection.

Use your Simmons username and password.

Click connect. It may take a few moments, but then you will see a list of the files in your personal web server space.

Anything you want to view on your personal web site must be copied to the “Public” folder of your web space

Now you can simply drag files from your computer or local drive to the public folder, and they will be copied there.

GSLIS Technology Group last revised 9/1/2005 Accessing Your Network Folder Off Campus: Using the Simmons VPN

What Is It? VPN is short for . Essentially, it is a means of making a secure connection to a network when your location is remote and you must use the public internet. Simmons uses VPN to allow you to access your network folder (known as the Y:drive on campus) from home.

How Do I Get To My Files? • In order to access your network folder from off-campus, please visit http://remote.simmons.edu

• Log in using your Simmons network username and password – the ones you use to log into a computer on the Simmons campus.

• After you log in, you will see the screen below. To get directly to your network folder, type: \\mcbfs1\student\username in the network path line (where “username” is your Simmons network username) and then hit the Go button.

GSLIS Technology Group Last revised 6/30/05 • You will now see all of your network folders and files, arranged in the order you set them up originally on campus.

• You can double-click on any of the names to open the folder or file. When clicking on files, you will be prompted to download or open them on your local computer to work on or read. Don’t forget to put the newest version back on the server when you’re done!

• If you want to copy files from your local computer to your network folder, click the Copy File to Server button. Once selected, you will see a screen that looks like this:

• Click on the Browse button and select the file that you wish to move to your network folder, after clicking Open, it will put the document path in the Local File to Use line and the file name in the Name After Copy line.

• Click Copy and you will be taken back to the listing of what is in your network folder and the new file should be added to it.

• If there is a file that you want to delete, click on the checkbox to the left of the file so that it is selected, then hit the Delete button at the top of the screen. It will ask if you are sure that you want to delete the item, click Yes and the file will be deleted immediately.
