Kennedy Human Rights will present the Ripple of Hope Award to its 2016 class of honorees including United States Vice President Joe Biden; Starbucks Chairman, President and CEO, Howard Schultz; and Guggenheim Partners’ Chairman of Investments / Global Chief Investment Officer and Managing Partner, Scott Minerd at the New York Hilton Midtown in New York City. This year’s Ripple of Hope Gala, hosted by Master of Ceremonies, actor Kevin Nealon, will feature stirring performances of the words and reflections of global Human Rights Defenders as interpreted by celebrated actors from stage and screen, including: Alan Alda, Alec Baldwin, Joy Behar, Harry Belafonte, Michael Bolton, Lorraine Bracco, Tim Daly, Danny DeVito, Trevor Donovan, Giancarlo Esposito, Danny Glover, Kelsey Grammer, Dennis Haysbert, Catherine Keener, Keegan-Michael Key, Tony Lo Bianco, Matthew Modine, Kate Mulgrew, Rosie Perez, Sullivan Stapleton, Alfre Woodard, and many more. “At such a tumultuous and deeply divided time in our collective history, it has never been more imperative that we work together towards our goals of ensuring justice and the protection of human rights across the world,” said Kerry Kennedy, President of Robert F. The 47th and current Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, has devoted his life to public service and the betterment of society, with a focused dedication to human rights. A member of the Democratic Party, Biden represented Delaware as a United States Senator from 1973 until 2009, following his election to Vice President. He is an outspoken supporter and enactor of key social justice initiatives spanning the realms of public health, women’s rights, affirmative action, public education, civil rights, same-sex marriage, environmental protection, and more. Howard Schultz, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Starbucks Coffee Company, has a made a longstanding commitment to civic responsibility and community services as a means of creating a strong culture in which purpose and profit are aligned missions. He has been widely recognized for his philanthropic efforts, including his work on educational initiatives aimed at fighting the AIDS epidemic, his promotion of responsible capitalism, and advocacy for ethics in business.     30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV.     Actors' Stories are a SAG Awards® Tradition When the first Screen Actors Guild Awards® were presented on March 8, 1995, the ceremony opened with a speech by Angela Lansbury introducing the concept behind the SAG Awards and the Actor® statuette. During her remarks she shared a little of her own history as a performer: "I've been Elizabeth Taylor's sister, Spencer Tracy's mistress, Elvis' mother and a singing teapot." Over the Years This glimpse into an actor’s life was so well received that it began a tradition of introducing each Screen Actors Guild Awards telecast with a distinguished actor relating a brief anecdote and sharing thoughts about what the art and craft mean on a personal level. For the first eight years of the SAG Awards, just one actor performed that customary opening. For the 9th Annual SAG Awards, however, producer Gloria Fujita O'Brien suggested a twist. She observed it would be more representative of the acting profession as a whole if several actors, drawn from all ages and backgrounds, told shorter versions of their individual journeys. To add more fun and to emphasize the universal truths of being an actor, the producers decided to keep the identities of those storytellers secret until they popped up on camera.     AWARD 1 Supporting Actor – Drama John Lithgow ‑‑ "The Crown" JOHN LITHGOW: Well, this is fantastic. I feel so lucky to have won this in the company of my fellow nominees. You guys, so many of you are my friends and former cast mates. I can congratulate all of you. Congratulations. You deserve this. "The Crown" just keeps on giving, and this is just the last of its gifts. Once again, I have to thank Peter Morgan, Stephen Daldry, Andy Harries, Ted Sarandos of Netflix, my reps, my wife, the magnificent English crew and company of actors led by the wonderful Claire Foy.
