15 GEAUGA SWEET STRINGS Albert Einstein said: “Life without playing music is inconceivable to me… get most joy in life out of music”. The Geauga Sweet Strings is an acoustic/string/percussion/free reed wind instrument group which meets at the Chardon Senior Center every Tuesday at 2:00pm. The instruments currently being played by our members are mountain or lap dulcimers; fiddles, a hammered dulcimer, a dulcijo and spoons. We are thrilled when those who play the harmonica and various percussion instruments such as the gourd, washboard, bells, kazoo and jig dancers are with us. There are numerous benefits to learning and playing an instrument: it makes you smarter; your social life will improve, it relieves stress, it gives you a sense of achievement and confidence, improves memory and patience, increases your creativity AND it’s just plain fun! We have played at various venues in Geauga, Lake and Ashtabula counties. We have performed for community groups, Healthcare facilities, libraries and festivals. Perhaps you have enjoyed listening to us at The Burton Century Village. We look forward to welcoming new members and audiences. For more information please contact Laura Sterlekar at 440-285-9709. Stay Healthier, Happier this Winter Winter in Northeast Ohio can be tough. Long stretches of dark, gloomy days; cold temperatures; rain, sleet and snow; plus darkness descending at 5 pm can all add up to feelings of depression, fatigue and general sluggishness.

So what’s a person to do to get through these winter days without succumbing to physical or emotional ailments? University Hospitals Director of Wellness Roy Buchinsky, MD, says two important keys to staying healthy and happy this winter are exercise and Vitamin D. He recommends staying active, outdoors or indoors, to maintain strength and muscle tone and promote production of hormones that are natural mood-boosters. “For those who are physically able to tolerate the cold and walk safely in winter conditions, a brisk walk on a winter day is a great choice,” Dr. Buchinsky says.

Vitamin D, which our bodies produce in response to sunshine, also has a positive effect on mood. “During these dark days of winter, we need to make up for the lack of sunshine by making an effort to eat foods high in naturally occurring vitamin D,” Dr. Buchinsky notes. Readily available sources include salmon and tuna or dairy products that are supplemented with vitamin D. A UH primary care physician can be a reliable source for wellness information, preventive care and support with a healthy diet and exercise plan any time of the year. Call 1-866-UH4-CARE (1-844- 374-2706) for a referral to a UH primary care doctor near you.
