Space Shuttle Closer to Launch 14 February 2007 Space Shuttle Closer to Launch 14 February 2007 making his first flight as the shuttle's pilot. Mission Specialists James Reilly (STS-89, STS-104) and Patrick Forrester (STS-105) will be returning to the station. Steven Swanson and John Olivas, both mission specialists, join the crew for their first flight into space. The mission astronauts will return to Kennedy a few weeks before liftoff to participate in the Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test. During this time they will practice launch activities, safety exercises, inspect the payload and conclude with a simulated main engine cut-off exercise. The entire assembly is stacked on the mobile launcher platform and is targeted to roll out to Launch Pad 39A on February 15. The rollout marks the next milestone for Mission STS-117 and will be the first launch from Pad 39A in four years. The flight of Space Shuttle Atlantis to the International Space Station on mission STS-117 has been targeted for March 15, a day earlier than originally planned. On the next space shuttle flight to continue constructing the station, the Atlantis crew will install a new truss segment, retract a set of solar arrays and unfold a new set on the starboard side of the station. Lessons learned from two previous missions will provide the astronauts with new techniques and tools to perform their duties. Inspections are finished for the solid rocket boosters and nearly complete for the orbiter, with 20 of 28 hail-damaged areas, all on the left side of the vehicle, already repaired. A new target launch date has not been determined, but teams will focus on preparing Atlantis for liftoff in late April. Mission STS-117 to the International Space Station will be scheduled sometime after a Russian Soyuz spacecraft returns from the station.

    CHRONOLOGY OF WAKEUP CALLS Compiled by Colin Fries, NASA History Division Updated 12/26/2013 The idea for the Wakeup Call chronology arose as a result of my dual interests in the history of music and the space program. I discovered as soon as I began working as an archivist at the NASA History Office that there was no complete list of these calls sent from Mission Control. There have always been inquiries about flown items and mission events as we all know, and those about wakeup calls and music played in space encompassed a steady stream (no pun intended)! And NASA’s Web pages did provide audio for these calls beginning with STS-85 with the note that: “Wakeup calls are a longstanding tradition of the NASA program” -- yet nothing on when it started. One of the most frequent inquiries was and still is – What was the first wakeup call? (I later learned that it was “Hello Dolly” sent during Gemini 6). So with the blessing of the history staff I began compiling a chronology using the sources in the NASA Historical Reference Collection here at NASA Headquarters. The Space Shuttle portion of the Chronology proved to be the most challenging since the Johnson Space Center Audio Control Room Recorder Log began with STS-80. In 2005, I was able to visit JSC Public Affairs and make copies from their query books to fill in the gap. Still there were Space Shuttle wakeup calls, even entire missions, that remained elusive. The other sources that I used are listed at the end of this PDF.

Introduction The first issue of the Spaceport News was December 13, 1962. The 1963, 1964 and 1965 Spaceport News were issued weekly. The Spaceport News was issued every two weeks, starting July 7, 1966, until the last issue on February 24, 2014. Spaceport Magazine, a monthly issue, superseded the Spaceport News in April 2014, until the final issue, Jan./Feb. 2020. The two 1962 Spaceport News issues and the issues from 1996 until the final Spaceport Magazine issue, are available for viewing at this website. The Spaceport News issues from 1963 through 1995 are currently not available online. In this Summary, black font is original Spaceport News text, blue font is something I added or someone else/some other source provided, and purple font is a hot link.
