FOOD, ACTIVITIES & FUN FOR ALL AGES FOOD, ACTIVITIES & FUN Page 6 FOR ALL AGES Page 7 Sticks and dogs - a bit of fun or more of a danger?

Summer is (hopefully!) nearly here and our dogs are – it was quite a surprise to find the stick which had to be looking forward to spending more and more time out removed via an incision into the stomach. and about on walks however one of the more common problems to affect dogs at this time of the year are stick One of the most major stick injuries we saw at the practice injuries. was a dog that fell onto a stick whilst playing. The stick penetrated the dog’s chest into the lungs and heart. Fetching a stick is probably one of your dog’s favourite Of course, this is a terrible case that does not happen pastimes and many people enjoy throwing a stick for their frequently, but it is one that we will never forget. We do dog, seeing the joy in their faces as they run to retrieve it sometimes see sticks that have penetrated other parts of a for you. However, we have seen a few minor and some dog’s body such as its foot, leg or abdomen not so minor injuries as a result of dogs playing with sticks. Stick injuries do tend to cause a lot of damage as the stick The most common stick injury is damage to the roof of sometimes fragments and we must be sure to remove the mouth. Dogs sometimes run with the stick pointing every last fragment, or they can lead to infection in the into the top of the mouth, a trip and a fall could result in area. It is not the most common injury we see; however, major damage to the roof of the mouth. More than once it is something to be aware of as we can prevent these I have had to repair a hole in a dog’s soft palate (the soft injuries - dogs love playing with balls just as much as bit at the back of the dog’s mouth). These holes can affect sticks. Make sure it is a ball that is big enough to prevent their breathing and is something that needs fixed as a your dog swallowing it when he catches it as we have matter of emergency. Other mouth injuries that I have even seen a few dogs that have swallowed balls when out seen include sticks stuck across the back of the mouth – playing! more straightforward to repair as they as usually just stuck between teeth and simply have to be prised out.

We occasionally come across dogs that have swallowed Charlie Carnochan sticks. Sometimes these cause obstructions or splinters in BVM&S MRCVS the gut and they have to be removed surgically. However, Director I did once see a dog that swallowed a 15-inch stick whole. It was so long that it couldn’t fit in the stomach in fact only “The best mixed veterinary practice in Scotland the last few inches were in the stomach with the remaining - GHP awards 2016” still in the gullet. The dog was not too bothered by this

Aberdeenshire North Foodbank

Aberdeenshire North Foodbank has helped over 3,444 adults and children in 2018 and we are continuing supporting them into 2019. We have new collection points at the Co-op & Sainsbury in Kintore and the Church has been running a drop in/ drop off café on a Friday morning. The church started the café in mid-November and has been a great help along with the other charities that locally support us by donating food and cash. We were blessed to receive the proceeds of the Christmas wreath making evening back in the beginning of Dec & also the proceeds form the Carols by candle light service on the 16th of Dec. We have been over whelmed by the generosity of the public over the Christmas Season and would just like to say a big thank you to everyone for supporting us.

Page 7 Report from the Rotary Club of Kintore, Kemnay & District (KKD)

It’s a new year and you’ll have made new resolutions for the year 2019. How many would like to give something back to the local, national and international communities. Our members of the Rotary Club of Kintore, Kemnay and District have been giving back for years. If you too would like to give something back then why not join us. We meet in Thainstone on Thursdays at 7.45pm, and for those who wish we have a meal before at 7pm. Please get in touch with Jim Thomson 07776172152. What have we been doing lately to give back? We have a speaker most weeks so we have been hearing about diabetes, the new neonatal unit and have given £200 to support them, we have been to see the new residential unit at Sue Ryder in Kincorth and again have given £200. We have been learning about the spread of polio as well as supporting our Interactors in Kemnay Academy, (most of whom are from Kintore) to organise an event to support the eradication of polio in the whole world. It is very close with only 3 countries left which have live polio and vaccinations Kintore Pharmacy Window Display costing only 20p. Perhaps you saw the Kintore Pharmacy decorating their window in purple to help to raise To give away money of course means we need to awareness as since we have been polio free since 2004 all fundraise. This brings us a lot of fun, and the main next due to vaccinations given to our children. event is the intoxicating tea party in Kintore Village Hall on Saturday afternoon 16th March at 2pm. Enjoy drinking with china cups from teapots filled with cocktails served by our male Rotarians in aprons! Enjoy sandwiches, scones and cakes from the cake stands, the games and company as well. Get your tickets from Henrick on 07739080460.

Rotary, Polio, Purple and Kintore School Ray Walker and Holly Walker were the guests at the Kintore School Assembly on Friday 22nd February 2019. Firstly they listened to an excellent presentation by 3K about Love using song, dance and speeches. Most of the pupils, and some of the teachers, were wearing purple and Ray and Holly were able to tell them that polio was a horrible disease. We could LOVE the fact we will never get it because we are vaccinated as babies, again as toddlers, and finally as teenagers. We explained that vaccinations in some overseas countries are counted by staining the children’s pinkies purple and so the whole project in ending polio is called Purple4polio. We are very close to eradicating polio in the whole world. Just need to keep vaccinating. And since a vaccination only costs 20p we need to raise money. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation helps by giving us £3 for every £1 we collect. Many thanks Kintore School.

We need more members to keep up this “giving back” so join us as a full member or as an associate or as an affiliate. Jim Thomson will be delighted to hear from you!

Elephant at Castle Fraser Ray Walker

Thanks to Castle Fraser for the purple scarf round their elephant! Our Funds4U posters are around and we are expecting a large amount of Kintore and Kemnay group applications. Last year we gave away nearly £3000. What will this year bring?

Page 10 Page 11 KINTORE CHURCH CELEBRATES BICENTENNIAL

Message from Rev Neil Meyer Jubilee “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” Dear friends, Luke 4:18-19 Oxford defines “Jubilee” as “a special anniversary of an event, especially one celebrating twenty-five or fifty years of a reign or activity.” So, for example, we remember the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Her Majesty’s coronation. This year we celebrate the bicentennial of our church building in Kintore. Although Christian worship in Kintore predates the current building by many centuries, this 200-year mark gives us the opportunity for celebration and the word which has come to mind for this celebration is: “Jubilee”. When you dig a bit deeper into the Biblical origins of the word, Jubilee, a world of meaning opens up. The word comes from the Hebrew word yobel meaning “ram” and refers to a ram’s horn trumpet. According to the Old Testament, the priests of Israel were to sound the trumpet throughout the land at the end of every 50-year period, announcing to the people that the Year of Jubilee – a year-long celebration – had begun. Well, so far it all sounds quite familiar and as we would expect it. But then, this celebration takes an unexpected political, social and economic turn… The form which the Jubilee celebration was to take was one of restitution. At the Jubilee debts were redeemed so that the poor could start the following year debt-free; land traded during the preceding 50 years was returned to its ancestral owners so that the dispossessed could return home; slaves were released so that they could start afresh as free people; even the land itself was left to lie fallow in order to recover from human exploitation. This is a powerful vision of restoration and of new beginnings – and what strikes me about the details of the Jubilee is that it is the poor, the broken-hearted, the weak, the fallen, the marginalized, the oppressed and the forgotten who have most cause to celebrate when the Jubilee year rolls around. As we have sifted through the historical records of the Christian Congregation in Kintore we have uncovered story after story of restoration and new beginnings, of care for the poor and comfort for the broken hearted – the Church is, after all, a community of new beginnings, a community that exists to reach out to and lift up the broken and the fallen. As Jesus came to seek and save the lost we, his people, follow in his footsteps. The Church is a Jubilee community. So let the trumpets sound and let the poor rejoice. The Year of Jubilee is here! Page 14 Page 15 However, one option for the A96 Dualling seems to have lost its way. The blue-green-violet route veers away from the A96, crossing the Don Valley and carving its way through 1,769 acres of quality farmland, splitting 63 farms in the process.

Why? To get to a flyover in a rural location near Lochter.

The rationale, apparently, is:

• to open up land to the north of Inverurie for development • to entice traffic from the A947 to take the long way round, joining and increasing traffic into Aberdeen form Kintore (The aim being to delay to need the upgrade the A947.)

What does this cross-country route mean?

• The extra distance would add some 240 miles and around £360 more fuel to an annual commute from Huntly. • The loss of farmland would take at least £760,000 of agricultural output out of our economy each year. • Start a rush of development from the rural area north and east of Inverurie and Kintore.

But, for Kintore, probably the biggest concern would be that the blue-green-violet option would add more traffic onto the already busy A96 into Aberdeen.

As an upgrade of the A96 from Inverness to Aberdeen, it really does seem as though the blue- green-violet option has lost its way.

These two benches – one bought by While the Council has no choice but to make savings in the Council at auction, the other kindly gifted by a Kemnay next year’s budget, councillors do have a choice about how resident – were on display on 26 January. The intention is that is done. As I write this, I do not know what choices the for both benches to be refurbished and finished in time to be different political groups on the Council will make.
