The interest of projective geometry arises in several visual comput- ing domains, in particular computer vision modelling and computer graphics. It provides a mathematical formalism to describe the geometry of cameras and the associated transformations, hence enabling the design of computational ap- proaches that manipulates 2D projections of 3D objects. In that respect, a fundamental aspect is the fact that objects at infinity can be represented and manipulated with projective geometry and this in contrast to the Euclidean geometry. What Is Algebraic Geometry? Linear Algebra can be seen (in parts at least) as the study of systems of linear equations. In geometric terms, this can be interpreted as the study of linear (or affine) subspaces of Cn (say). Algebraic Geometry generalizes this in a natural way be looking at systems of polynomial equations. Their geometric realizations (their solution sets in Cn, say) are called algebraic varieties. Many questions one can study in various parts of mathematics lead in a natural way to (systems of) polynomial equations, to which the methods of Algebraic Geometry can be applied. Algebraic Geometry provides a translation between algebra (solutions of equations) and geometry (points on algebraic varieties). The methods are mostly algebraic, but the geometry provides the intuition. Compared to Differential Geometry, in Algebraic Geometry we consider a rather restricted class of “manifolds” — those given by polynomial equations (we can allow “singularities”, however). For example, y = cos x defines a perfectly nice differentiable curve in the plane, but not an algebraic curve. In return, we can get stronger results, for example a criterion for the existence of solutions (in the complex numbers), or statements on the number of solutions (for example when intersecting two curves), or classification results. -

Two Heuristic \Proofs" of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra: Let p(z) be a polynomial of degree n > 0; we can even assume it is a monomial. We also know that the number of zeros is at most n. We show that there are exactly n. 1. Proof 1: Recall that polynomials are entire functions and that Liouville's Theorem says that a bounded entire function is in fact constant. Suppose that p has no roots. Then 1=p is an entire function and it is bounded. Thus, it is constant which means p is a constant polynomial and has degree 0. This contradicts the fact that p has positive degree. Thus, p must have a root α1. We can then factor out (z − α1) from p(z) = (z − α1)q(z) where q(z) is an (n − 1)-degree polynomial. We may repeat the above process until we have a full factorization of p. 2. Proof 2: On the real line, an algorithm for finding a root of a continuous function is to look for when the function changes signs. How do we generalize this to C? Instead of having two directions, we have a whole S1 worth of directions. If we use colors to depict direction and brightness to depict magnitude, we can plot a graph of a continuous function f : C ! C. Near a zero, we'll see all colors represented. If we travel in a loop around any point, we can keep track of whether it passes through all the colors; around a zero, we'll pass through all the colors, possibly many times. -

(Maharashtra) INDIA [email protected] ABSTRACT Importance of Elliptic Curves in Cryptography was independently proposed by Neal Koblitz and Victor Miller in 1985.Since then, Elliptic curve cryptography or ECC has evolved as a vast field for public key cryptography (PKC) systems. In PKC system, we use separate keys to encode and decode the data. Since one of the keys is distributed publicly in PKC systems, the strength of security depends on large key size. The mathematical problems of prime factorization and discrete logarithm are previously used in PKC systems. ECC has proved to provide same level of security with relatively small key sizes. The research in the field of ECC is mostly focused on its implementation on application specific systems. Such systems have restricted resources like storage, processing speed and domain specific CPU architecture. Elliptic curves have a long and interesting history and arise in a wide range of contexts in mathematics. The study of elliptic curves involves elements from most of the major disciplines of mathematics: algebra, geometry, analysis, number theory, topology, and even logic. Elliptic curves appear in the proofs of many deep results in mathematics: for example, they are a central ingredient in the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, which states that there are no positive integer solutions to the equation xn + yn = zn for any integer n ≥ 3. Our goals are fairly modest in comparison, so we will begin by outlining the basic algebraic and geometric properties of elliptic curves and motivate the addition law. We will then study the behavior of elliptic curves modulo p: ultimately, there is a fairly strong analogy between the structure of the points on an elliptic curve modulo p and the integers modulo n. -

The essence of this approach consists in combining the well-known Hasse bound with an explicit formula for the quantities of interest-reduced modulo p. It allows to advance an efficient technique to compute the 2 six cardinalities associated with the family Ep, for p ≡ 1 (mod 3), whose complexity is O˜ (log p), thus improving the best-known algorithmic solution with almost an order of magnitude. 18.783 Elliptic Curves Spring 2015 Lecture #25 05/12/2015 25 Modular forms and L-series As we will show in the next lecture, Fermat's Last Theorem is a direct consequence of the following theorem [11, 12]. Theorem 25.1 (Taylor-Wiles). Every semistable elliptic curve E=Q is modular. In fact, as a result of subsequent work [3], we now have the stronger result, proving what was previously known as the modularity conjecture (or Taniyama-Shimura-Weil conjecture). Theorem 25.2 (Breuil-Conrad-Diamond-Taylor). Every elliptic curve E=Q is modular. Our goal in this lecture is to explain what it means for an elliptic curve over Q to be modular (we will also define the term semistable). This requires us to delve briefly into the theory of modular forms. Our goal in doing so is simply to understand the definitions and the terminology; we will omit all but the most straight-forward proofs. 25.1 Modular forms Definition 25.3. Our approach works for virtually any modular function yielding class invariants. The main algorithmic tool is modular polynomials, a concept which we generalize to functions of higher level. 1. Introduction Let K be an imaginary quadratic number field and let O be an order in K. The ring class field HO of the order O is an abelian extension of K, and the Artin map gives an isomorphism s Pic(O) −−! Gal(HO=K) of the Picard group of O with the Galois group of HO=K. In this paper we are interested in explicitly computing ring class fields. Complex multiplication theory provides us with a means of doing so. Letting ∆ denote the discriminant of O, it states that we have j HO = K[X]=(P∆); j where P∆ is the minimal polynomial over Q of the j-invariant of the complex elliptic curve j C=O. This polynomial is called the Hilbert class polynomial. It is a non-trivial fact that P∆ has integer coefficients. The fact that ring class fields are closely linked to j-invariants of elliptic curves has its ramifications outside the context of explicit class field theory. Indeed, if we let p denote a j prime that is not inert in O, then the observation that the roots in Fp of P∆ 2 Fp[X] are j j-invariants of elliptic curves over Fp with endomorphism ring O made computing P∆ a key ingredient in the elliptic curve primality proving algorithm [12]. -

Chapter 12 The cross ratio Math 4520, Fall 2017 We have studied the collineations of a projective plane, the automorphisms of the underlying field, the linear functions of Affine geometry, etc. We have been led to these ideas by various problems at hand, but let us step back and take a look at one important point of view of the big picture. 12.1 Klein's Erlanger program In 1872, Felix Klein, one of the leading mathematicians and geometers of his day, in the city of Erlanger, took the following point of view as to what the role of geometry was in mathematics. Let there be given a manifold and in it a group of transforma- tions; it is our task to investigate those properties of a figure belonging to the manifold that are not changed by the transfor- mation of the group. So our purpose is clear. Choose the group of transformations that you are interested in, and then hunt for the \invariants" that are relevant. This search for invariants has proved very fruitful and useful since the time of Klein for many areas of mathematics, not just classical geometry. In some case the invariants have turned out to be simple polynomials or rational functions, such as the case with the cross ratio.
