CALIFORNIA’S COUTS COUSINS IN MEMORY OF OUR FRIEND, JAMES ARMSTRONG A Bi-annual Newsletter for the Descendants of the Couts Family #47 WELCOME- It is the goal of this newsletter to create interest in and share the research for the Couts (pronounced Koutz) and Allied Family genealogy. It can only be written with the cooperation of each family member. We encourage each of you to send in your family group sheets and enter data as far back as you can find. The information that you find within its covers will be as “true” as we can prove. We gladly accept articles, photos, genealogy lines, and family stories. We plan to complete this edition to Newsletter #50 and then, we will end the series. IS IT PROOF? For over twenty years, brother Bo Couts and I have been looking for proof that Teter Couts (Dietrich Kautz) was related to Henry Couts (believed to be his son). Are they related? I think that we’ve found a piece of proof. We know that Henry Couts was related to Chrisley Couts, John Couts, and Margaret Couts. Chrisley Couts Jr. and Margaret Couts were left money and land in Henry’s will. Chrisley Couts Jr.’s father was Chrisley Couts Sr. Chrisley Couts, Sr’s (d. 1790) tombstone was carved (Chrisley Couts, brother of John Couts, 1811) and was placed in the Couts Cemetery on the John Armstrong farm, former land of John and Chrisley Couts. John Couts bought Chrisley’s land from his heirs probably before their mother’s (Sarah Wright Couts Collins) death circa 1811 and before they all headed to Indiana and Missouri on a wagon train with the Bartons, Collins, and Caldwells.

  • Indiana Magazine of History Tions Arose That Caused the Lieutenant-Governor to Appear in a Rather Unfavorable Light
INDIANA MAGAZINEOF HISTORY VOL. XVI JUNE, 1920 No. 2 Christopher Harrison MARTHATUCKER MORRIS, Salem, Indiana. When the adventurers of the east had settled into well organized homes and cities, the pioneer began to wander to the middle west, and followers of Daniel Boone and George Rogers Clark began to make the history of southern Indiana. Many men breathing the spirit of nature and adventure came to the towns along the Ohio river and pushing further inland the town of Salem began to be a place of importance in the settlement of southern Indiana. It is the life of one of those early men of whom we write; a peculiar and striking figure with an air of mystery sur- rounding him, even in the days when in Indiana, wild beasts and rough and ready fights for the survival of the strongest, left little time for mystery. Christopher Harrison, from 1815 until 1835, perhaps something like twenty years, claimed Salem and the vicinity as his home. It is fitting that a Salemite honor his memory by reviewing the incidents of his life. The subject of this sketch was born in Cambridge, Dorchester county, Maryland, in the year 1775. The family came from England about the middle of the eighteenth century. His father, Robert Har- rison, lived and died on a farm called “Appleby” in the suburbs of Cambridge. His son Christopher received a liberal education, being a graduate of St. John’s College, Annapolis, Maryland, and receiving also a finishing classical course in Europe. While studying to become a lawyer, he served as confidential clerk to William Patterson, one of the wealthy merchants of Baltimore, and is said to have been also a tutor of Elizabeth Patterson daughter of the merchant.

  • The Geography of Indiana's Governors
The Geography of Indiana’s Governors STEPHENS. VISHER A study of birthplaces and various other geographic facts relative to the governors and lieutenant governors of Indiana has revealed several little known facts of interest. Since 1816, when Indiana came into the Union, thirty-five men have been governors of the State.’ Under the Constitution of 1916, the governor’s term was three years, but since the second constitution went into effect in 1851, the term is four years. Before 1851 a governor could be reelected, but since then a governor is not eligible for a second consecutive term. Before 1851, three governors served single terms of three years each. Two were reelected and served six years each, while two others who were reelected did not fill out the second term. Joseph A. Wright was elected for a three year term in 1849. While he was governor, the second constitution was framed and ratified, and he was made eligible for the four year term, which was to begin in January, 1853. In the period of three-year terms, governors were in- augurated early in December, but since 1852, their terms begin in January. Governor Wright, therefore, served a lit- tle more than seven years (Dec., 1849 to Jan., 1857). Including Governor Wright, and not counting the pres- ent incumbent, fourteen governors have served full four- year terms. Sime 1857, four governors elected for four years did not serve out their terms. Before 1849, there were two governors who served less than one year each, Ratlif Boone (1822 )and Paris C. Dunning (1849).
