The Te Ropu Wahine Maori Toko I te Ora – Maori Womens Welfare League in collaboration with Pacifica Manakau held their inaugural Pink Ribbon Breakfast on 11 June 2015 The venue was the Manurewa Netball Centre hall, Manurewa. The hall was offered free of charge by the Manurewa Netball President Lil Cattell, Pacifica Manukau looked after the beautiful table arrangements, a big thank you to Anahila and Margaret with the League managing the catering. The initial planning numbers started at one hundred wahine attending; however interest in the event was so great that the number was increased to two hundred (200). On the day over two hundred and fifty manuwhiri arrived, made up of many men, tamariki, health professionals, wananga, schools, League members and Whanau Toko I te Ora whānau (eight whānau and six mokopuna).

The Pink Ribbon Breakfast was opened by National President Prue Kapua, Pacifica Manukau President Bernadette Pereira, Regional President Tina Barclay, MP’s and Louisa Wall, Pa Ariki no Rarotonga accompanied by the Consulate Rarotonga. He mihi ano tēnei ki a Martin Cooper rāua ko Rangi McLean for the karakia whakatau and mihi mihi, supported by Manurewa marae whānau.

Three wāhine toa, breast cancer survivors presented commanding and compelling stories of their personal journeys of breast cancer that included cancer treatments undertaken both conventional, rongoa and spiritually based. Bernadette Pereira opened the presentations, followed by Vikki Ham and Angie (Ladybug). What a privilege for listeners to gain an insight into a most personal but difficult time in their lives. The final presenter was Heather Emory who spoke of her cervical cancer journey and the healing that has driven her passion for breast and cervical screening promotion. Heather works for Raukura Hauora o Tainui who remain the only Māori provider in Aotearoa – that undertakes both screenings.

On entrance all attendees received a BreastSceen bag with pens, lip balm and breast screening information from CMDHB. BreastSceen staff Miriam Te Hira Scanlon and Jessie Mathers from BreastSceen Waitemata Northland negotiated the Auckland morning traffic to arrive and support the kaupapa. This was very much appreciated; the Ngakau Atawhai branch whom both waahine belong to has long advocated the breast screening kaupapa to League members in the Tamaki Makaurau rohe. Miriam also donated Breast Screen bags which will be distributed to League members at the regional council hui on 20 June 2015.
