Freeman This investigation was an analysis of the interaction of adolescent exposure to methylphenidate (MPH; trade name: Ritalin) on nicotine sensitization and conditioned place preference (CPP) in a rodent model and underlying mechanisms of this effect. Animals were treated IP with 1 mg/kg MPH or saline using a ―school day‖ regimen of five days on, two days off, from postnatal day (P) 28-50. During the final two weeks of MPH treatment, animals were either behaviorally sensitized to nicotine (0.5 mg/kg free base) or saline for 10 days, or conditioned to nicotine or saline using the CPP behavioral paradigm. In addition, three days after behavioral sensitization was complete, animals were analyzed for stress behavior using the forced swim stress behavioral test. In addition, 24 hours after post-test conditioning animals were analyzed for the effect of a clinically relevant dose of pre-exposed MPH (1 mg/kg) and nicotine treatment on the expression of BDNF in the nucleus accumbens and dorsal hippocampus. Behavioral results revealed that adolescent pre-exposure to MPH blunted nicotine behavioral sensitization in both male and female rats during the first week of testing. However, MPH enhanced nicotine CPP in both adolescent male and female rats. Interesting, animals administered MPH demonstrated a significantly decreased latency to immobility in the forced swim stress behavioral test. In addition, pre-exposure to a 1 mg/kg dose of MPH appears to have sensitized the BDNF response to nicotine in females as compared to all other groups. 2 DEDICATION This dissertation is dedicated to my mentor Dr. Russ Brown.     Concurrent Alcohol and Tobacco Dependence Mechanisms and Treatment David J. Drobes, Ph.D. People who drink alcohol often also smoke and vice versa. Several mechanisms may contribute to concurrent alcohol and tobacco use. These mechanisms include genes that are involved in regulating certain brain chemical systems; neurobiological mechanisms, such as cross-tolerance and cross-sensitization to both drugs; conditioning mechanisms, in which cravings for alcohol or nicotine are elicited by certain environmental cues; and psychosocial factors (e.g., personality characteristics and coexisting psychiatric disorders). Treatment outcomes for patients addicted to both alcohol and nicotine are generally worse than for people addicted to only one drug, and many treatment providers do not promote smoking cessation during alcoholism treatment. Recent findings suggest, however, that concurrent treatment for both addictions may improve treatment outcomes. We strongly oppose exempting marijuana smoking and vaping from the proposed ordinance. In order to have a 100% smokefree multi-unit housing, the ordinance must include the smoking and vaping of both tobacco and marijuana products. Residents in Corte Madera should be able to breathe air that is free from all types of secondhand smoke exposure. Secondhand smoke from combusted marijuana contains fine particulate matter which is a form of indoor air pollution, which can be breathed deeply into the lungs

    ASH Fact sheet: Tobacco and the Developing World July 2019 SUMMARY • Around 1.1 billion people aged 15 and over smoke, with 80% living in LMICs (low and middle income countries). Tobacco growing and consumption have become concentrated in the developing world where the health, economic, and environmental burden is heaviest and likely to increase. • Evidence shows that the number of smokers in LMICs has been rising and is likely to continue rising without the enforcement of stringent tobacco controls. Adolescent smoking is also considerably high in LMICs, over four times the level in the UK. • The health burden of smoking is disproportionately high in the developing world. By 2030, it is estimated that tens of millions of people in the developing world would have died from tobacco consumption. The majority of child deaths from second-hand smoke also occur in Africa and South-East Asian alone. • Smoking in the developing world has been shown to reinforce poverty as already deprived smokers spend less on healthcare, children’s education, food, and clothes. • Almost all tobacco farming now takes place in low and middle-income countries. This causes massive environmental damage such as mass deforestation and air pollution, and the industry’s poor safety practices leave tobacco farmers – many of which are children – prone to developing serious life-threatening illnesses. • Transnational tobacco companies have been shown to target women and children in developing countries. They also undermine efforts to curb the harms of tobacco through litigation
