PASTORAL COLUMN Dear Brothers and Sisters, This column will be somewhat of a catch all – items that are going on around us and our parish life. But I thought you might find some of them interesting. Fall Festival …. The numbers are being worked and processed. We are still waiting for a few invoices and reimbursements to be made. However, I’ve been told that the festival results are really good, and we have broken previous amounts in various areas. The full report should be forthcoming in a couple of weeks. While we await those results, I once more want to thank everyone for making this festival such a great success. It’s almost impossible to calculate the number of hours people put into this very successful festival. So, thank you again. Kitchens . . . The new kitchen in the Christus Center is 95% complete. There are a couple of items we are still waiting on to be finished (such as a garbage disposal and some shelving). However, the kitchen is usable at this time provided people remember there is no garbage disposal. The kitchen in McGivney is another matter. The Fire Marshall will not approve the vent system over the stove. And, there’s a couple of other electrical issues that could easily be taken care of IF the subs would come out and do it. Until these items are finished, use of that kitchen is not practical or safe. So, we keep calling and waiting; but are definitely working on it. Leadership Summit . . . I want to thank the members of the Pastoral Council and Stewardship Committee for putting together a wonderful afternoon for the leadership of the parish. The leadership of every organization, ministry, committee, etc., was invited to meet together as a way for all who represent their ministry, organization, etc. to bring concerns to the floor as well as to seek solutions from the common leadership. It’s a shame that not all ministries sent people to the summit. Often, these are the same ministries that don’t follow policies and guidelines and create havoc for each other and the parish staff. As a community, we really do need common procedures and policies thinking of the common good and the welfare of the whole parish. This model of stewardship comes from the scriptures. And, in practicing good stewardship we should care for one another and the facilities we have. Just an example: If your ministry decides to cancel a meeting or gathering, please notify the office to take the event off the schedule. We then will cancel the set up and take down as well as save on electricity by not cooling/ heating the space. It seems so simple; but this happens all the time. If the head of a ministry is notifying the members of the cancelation – it’s just one more email or phone call to the office. Good leadership is tantamount to good stewardship. Recycle Dumpsters . . . We began to recycle paper several years ago. Over time, the company stopped paying us for the paper because it was no longer economically effective for the company. However, we continued as stewards of creation to keep recycling. More time passes, and people stopped reading the signs on the dumpsters and filled the dumpsters with products that are not accepted by the recycling company. When the containers were full, people just piled everything on the ground; mix that with rain and wind and now we are cleaning our whole parking lot and Cypresswood Drive. The issue of our parking lot “eye sore” came before Pastoral Council and I accepted the recommendation that we remove the bins from campus. What started out as something that brought money to the parish (which went to Outreach Ministries) became something that was costing us. The office is still committed to recycling as a way of good stewardship. Stewards of Creation . . . We are asking all ministries to please consider not using Styrofoam cups and plates. Styrofoam does not decompose in the environment under normal circumstances. Much like plastic, Styrofoam is made from a polystyrene-based petroleum product that is not biodegradable. Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose, and Styrofoam takes much longer because it is a stronger form of plastic. It’s a small step forward, but one that can easily be accomplished to help the earth. With my prayers for a complete renewal,

PARISHPARISH WIDE WIDE EVENT EVENT HI HIGHLIGHTGHLIGHT Guatemala School Mission Keeping the Dream Alive Living Our Mission as a “People for Others” The Guatemala School Mission Committee will again hold our annual fundraiser in support of Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Chiche’ Guatemala the weekend of November 10-11. Joining us again will be the pastor of the “Little School,” Father Juan Antonio, accompanied by the Principal of the school, Juana Macario. They will be visiting from November 6 through November 12 to assist our parish in raising funds for teacher salary support, which now stands at $70,000 per year for Pre-K through 6th grades. While on mission visiting the school last summer, we learned that the government demanded that the teachers be paid minimum salaries totaling $70,000 per year or pay a large fine or close the school. With the support of Father Norbert, we chose to fund the shortfall and increase the commitment to the teachers’ salaries in order to continue this mission and relationship that has existed since the school opened in 2001. From that beginning until today, 3,762 boys and girls ages 4-13 have attended the school, with 422 having graduated sixth grade as a direct result of the continued support of St. Ignatius and its parishioners. Two former students were teachers, and four former students are currently teaching at the school. We faced an enormous challenge last year resulting from Hurricane Harvey. The Little School stood beside us with prayers, including a 30-minute live Facebook prayer service. May you find it in your heart to continue your prayers for the school this year, and may God Bless you for your continued financial support.

. . Empezamos a reciclar papel hace varios años.
