This past season, the OWHA truly lived up to its vision of World Hockey Leaders, offering first class programs throughout Ontario with a commitment to Female Hockey that is unmatched anywhere in the world. Sincere thank you and congratulations to the countless volunteers and supporters who have given so much to ensure players are supported as athletes and as people. The OWHA is a strong family that competes to win games and to provide the best programs yet comes together with a powerful perspective of supporting each other, recognizing that we win together when female hockey and sports gain universal credibility and acceptance. We continue to be blessed by an incredible past and owe so much to so many players and volunteers who we will never know as the internet was not around to capture and preserve their wonderful stories and accomplishments. Parks Canada and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada unveiled a plaque in the honour of the Preston Rivulettes. The team was unstoppable from 1931 to 1940, winning 95% of its games. The team won 10 Ontario titles, 6 eastern Canada titles and 6 Dominion titles. Relatives of team members attended the ceremony on December 22, 2017 in Cambridge. The OWHA annual report and the records of its teams, associations and leagues document the collective accomplishments of the organization. Games and championships were won and lost while everlasting friendships and memories were created. The future measure of success will come as young players advance through school and life. There are many studies that show the correlation between participation in sport and success in business. One global survey of 400 women executives found that 94% participated in sport and 74% agreed that a background in sport can accelerate a woman’s leadership and career potential (Ernst & Young Global Limited, 2014). It is often a single person and family who deliver the most powerful and everlasting messages. A very special young girl, Abbey Tran, played for the Etobicoke Dolphins in the Atom B division of the provincial championship. She was a happy, healthy player and leader. Shortly after the championship, Abbey became ill and lost a valiant battle with a rare illness. Her grandmother, Debbie Bland, read messages from Abbey’s teammates describing her as an inspirational leader and a very supportive person. She loved hockey and life and found positives in any win or loss. Our hearts go out to this family and we thank them for the amazing legacy Abbey has left her teammates, friends and family. The OWHA continues its positive impact on the growth and development of Female Hockey nationally and internationally. The Global Game, an initiative of the OWHA, was held in March with 38 countries joining together as teammates with a final score of Team White 129 and Team Blue 134. The OWHA hosted the Team Canada game with participants coming together from all parts of Ontario and Canada as teammates. We are thrilled that Female Hockey is uniting the world through sport. This was seen through the participation of North and South Korean women’s hockey players in the 2018 Olympics. This opportunity came about due to the strength of female hockey players throughout the world who came together in the successful lobby to have women’s hockey as an Olympic sport. Together, we accomplish the impossible. Our long-time relationship with China continued this year as we sanctioned Kunlan Red Star and Vanke Rays to play in the CWHL. We welcomed the Quqihar Team that played a series of exhibition games and won the Heilongjiang championship on their return to China. The China National team played an exhibition game in Mississauga prior to travelling to Italy for their world championship. We also welcomed New Zealand who was hosted by Toronto Leaside Girls Hockey Association. The OWHA congratulates the Little NHL on the growth of its Novice, Atom, Peewee, Bantam and Midget girls’ divisions. We provided the on-ice officials and supervision for the 74 games and congratulate the champions and all participants. 1 Safety and attention to risk management continue to be a priority in our goal of providing a physically and emotionally positive environment. Concussion awareness, recognition and management are important with medical doctor’s approval to return to play combined with return to play guidelines. On March 7, 2018 Rowan’s Law received Royal Assent. Rowan’s Law is the first legislation in Canada to deal with concussions in sport. At this time, only Rowan’s Law Day is in force as the rest of the act will not come into force until regulations are finalized. Many OWHA associations have been operating excellent FUNdamentals programs for players at various ages. We are working with Hockey Canada on the new Initiation Program that will create some adaptations. We will keep members informed and look forward to feedback from those running the sessions. We had a very successful year at the high performance levels winning gold and silver at the U18 National Championship in Quebec City. OWHA players performed well at the Four Nations Cup, the U18 World Championship and the Winter . Brampton Canadettes Midget AA team took fourth place at the Esso Cup. We congratulate all players, teams and officials who were outstanding representatives. Upcoming high performance events include the Ontario Summer Games and the Canada Winter Games. We look forward to hosting the 2019 Esso Cup in Sudbury, working with local volunteers and leaving a strong legacy for Female Hockey and the community. We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport for recognizing and supporting the OWHA as the PSO for Female Hockey in the Province of Ontario. Special thanks to our sports consultant, Barbara Lyon-Stewart.

EMPOWERING FEMALE ATHLETES EVERYWHERE

SheIS was born from a vision to create progressive change from a place of positivity. Sports have long been seen as a great way to create strong individuals and future leaders. In recent years, the world has also seen the move towards women's equality become increasingly prevalent. SheIS saw an opportunity to marry the already strong sports community with this momentum and create a real impact in the women’s sports world. SheIS seeks to embrace the known benefits that sport brings to both individuals and communities, with a specific focus on raising awareness of, engagement with, and participation in girls and women's leagues. This is an inclusive effort, and we are proud to partner with both male and female leagues, athletes, business leaders, and passionate fans in order to achieve our mission.
