Page 5 - www.ngroadracing.org 2021, NG’s Golden Anniversary Season From Gaydon Aerodrome 18th April 1971 to Brands Hatch 18th April 2021 The NGMCC (North Gloucestershire Motor Cycle Club) was born back at the end of 1970 when twelve members of the Cheltenham Motor Club decided to break away from the increasingly car focused club and set up a club dedicated to motorcycle racing. Each of the twelve put up £25 (about a week’s salary back then, the equivalent to about £750 today….. would you?) to get the club off the ground. This was mainly to purchase all the kit needed to set up a temporary racetrack as the only place to race back then were disused airfields for the fledgling club. The band of twelve were John Biscoe, Don Browning, Kevin Browning, Mike Chandler, Brian Chapman, Bob Davis, Gerry Gardner, Lyn Giles, Fred Hodder, Bob Mayo, Pat Onions and Brian Smith After a chance meeting between Pat Onions (NGMCC) the then Managing Director of Cotton Motorcycles and Bill Underwood, the Chairman of the RAF Motor Sports Association, a link was made, and a deal was done. If Cotton’s could provide the RAF team bikes for the International Six-Day Trial, then the RAF would help negotiate the airfield venues for NGMCC to race on. Very soon several suitable venues were found in the Gloucestershire/Wiltshire and Warwickshire area to set up as temporary weekend race circuits and the NGMCC / RAFMSA co- promotions started. Which brings me neatly onto NG Road Racing. What is the difference between NGMCC and NG Road Racing? well nothing but the name really. The change came when the Club went from Regional to National in the 1990’s (or Non-territorial as Page 6 - www.ngroadracing.org the ACU, the sport’s governing body called it). This was to allow the club to race at any circuit in the country rather than being tied to the South West corner of England. However, to change status you could have no local or regional connotations in your organisation’s name…. So out with North Gloucestershire and in with NG (…simple). To this day though, almost 30 years on, people still refer to the us as “The North Glos”! So, picture the scene, Gaydon in Warwickshire on 18th April 1971, and the very first meeting was staged. Roll forward 50 years and we are still racing. Not bad for a little club that started in Cheltenham as a bit of fun, that even those original twelve though might last for a couple of years. I am proud to say that my Dad was one of the twelve and I was at that very first meeting (aged 6) …. I know, I don’t look old enough….! Russ Gardner Images (Top to bottom) 45 Derek Minter – British Champ “The Mint” was at the first meeting at Gaydon in 1971. 3 Roger Nicholls – 4 times a champion in 350cc and Unlimited in the mid 1970’s. 23 Sidecars and straw bales. 13 Phil Bevan – The clubs most successful rider with 17 championship wins 234 Open face helmets, black leathers and not a disk brake in sight Champions Past and Present 1971 Open Champion Richard Allen vs 2020 Open Champion Max Symonds Page 7 - www.ngroadracing.org NG Road Racing… Who Won What in 2020? This is the definitive list of who won what at the end of the Covid ravaged 2020 season. www.ngroadracing.org 2020 turned into a very strange year indeed with the Covid ravaged calendar. In the end we managed, with everyone’s amazing efforts to fit in two race meetings, Cadwell Park and Castle Combe. It was everyone feeling that with six rounds in total that the champions will be honoured and marked down in the clubs history books, and also be added to all the class championship trophies…….. once the businesses are open to do the all-important engraving!! 2020 NG Road Racing Class Champions Steve Lynham Motorcycles Formula 125 * Oliver Sweet Phoenix Junior Supersport * Cameron Hall A and R Racing Spares Formula 400 * Ritchie Welch EDP Photo News 500cc * Ritchie Welch Inlay Management Services 600cc * Aaron Ridewood Bluebell Lakes Powerbike * Sean Montgomery Phoenix Motorcycles Open * Max
