Page 5 - www.ngroadracing.org 2021, NG’s Golden Anniversary Season

From Gaydon Aerodrome 18th April 1971 to Brands Hatch 18th April 2021

The NGMCC (North Gloucestershire Motor Cycle Club) was born back at the end of 1970 when twelve members of the Cheltenham Motor Club decided to break away from the increasingly car focused club and set up a club dedicated to . Each of the twelve put up £25 (about a week’s salary back then, the equivalent to about £750 today….. would you?) to get the club off the ground. This was mainly to purchase all the kit needed to set up a temporary racetrack as the only place to race back then were disused airfields for the fledgling club.

The band of twelve were John Biscoe, Don Browning, Kevin Browning, Mike Chandler, Brian Chapman, Bob Davis, Gerry Gardner, Lyn Giles, Fred Hodder, Bob Mayo, Pat Onions and Brian Smith

After a chance meeting between Pat Onions (NGMCC) the then Managing Director of Cotton Motorcycles and Bill Underwood, the Chairman of the RAF Motor Sports Association, a link was made, and a deal was done. If Cotton’s could provide the RAF team bikes for the International Six-Day Trial, then the RAF would help negotiate the airfield venues for NGMCC to race on. Very soon several suitable venues were found in the Gloucestershire/Wiltshire and Warwickshire area to set up as temporary weekend race circuits and the NGMCC / RAFMSA co- promotions started.

Which brings me neatly onto NG Road Racing. What is the difference between NGMCC and NG Road Racing? well nothing but the name really. The change came when the Club went from Regional to National in the 1990’s (or Non-territorial as

Page 6 - www.ngroadracing.org the ACU, the sport’s governing body called it). This was to allow the club to race at any circuit in the country rather than being tied to the South West corner of England. However, to change status you could have no local or regional connotations in your organisation’s name…. So out with North Gloucestershire and in with NG (…simple). To this day though, almost 30 years on, people still refer to the us as “The North Glos”!

So, picture the scene, Gaydon in Warwickshire on 18th April 1971, and the very first meeting was staged. Roll forward 50 years and we are still racing. Not bad for a little club that started in Cheltenham as a bit of fun, that even those original twelve though might last for a couple of years.

I am proud to say that my Dad was one of the twelve and I was at that very first meeting (aged 6) …. I know, I don’t look old enough….! Russ Gardner

Images (Top to bottom) 45 Derek Minter – British Champ “The Mint” was at the first meeting at Gaydon in 1971. 3 Roger Nicholls – 4 times a champion in 350cc and Unlimited in the mid 1970’s. 23 Sidecars and straw bales. 13 Phil Bevan – The clubs most successful rider with 17 championship wins 234 Open face helmets, black leathers and not a disk brake in sight

NG Road Racing… Who Won What in 2020?

This is the definitive list of who won what at the end of the Covid ravaged 2020 season.

www.ngroadracing.org

2020 turned into a very strange year indeed with the Covid ravaged calendar. In the end we managed, with everyone’s amazing efforts to fit in two race meetings, Cadwell Park and Castle Combe. It was everyone feeling that with six rounds in total that the champions will be honoured and marked down in the clubs history books, and also be added to all the class championship trophies…….. once the businesses are open to do the all-important engraving!!

Page 35 - www.ngroadracing.org In Safe Hands Sports and Remedial Therapist

and Sportstape Practitioner.

I am so pleased to be working again with NG Racing again this season. For those of you who don’t yet know me my background in racing started back in the late 80’s I marshalled for many clubs and have a passion for racing.

I trained as a Remedial Sports Therapist, then trained to use Sportstape and finally as a Pilates instructor and have never looked back. I am proud to say I am part of the physio team at the TT and have been for the last 5 years. I also have a n understanding of how racers need to be out on track doing what they love.

So how much does it cost? - I work on donations there is no fixed amount that you have to pay so treatment will not cost you a fortune. All the donations go into my racing kitty – to get me to the next meeting and pay for necessities like Sportstape.

How I can help you? Good lap times are down to many factors, but good bike preparation is fairly high up there. You all know that you would never dream of putting your bike out on track without preparing it well first. The same goes for your body! Being able to comfortably move on the bike or sidecar will reduce your lap times. I can help you achieve this. Why not ask some of the riders that I have helped out over the past seasons.

I have a Facebook page NG Racing in Safe Hands – I always upload where I am set up at each meeting. Any of the Race office staff will also be able to point you in my direction. If you have any questions before the meeting, please message me via Facebook. I am a member of NGRRC Motorbike and Sidecar Racing Facebook group under Sue Hunt LSSM. If you need to book in for any meeting it is easiest to message me via the Facebook page or send me a text on 07767837585.

Has all the winter preparation paid off? Let us get on the grid and find out.

The long winter months working away in the garages all over the country by the UK's hard core club and national level riders is now done, the wait is over, it's time to get back out on track. The massed paddock of riders are keener than ever after last years COVID ravaged season to get back out on track. Luckily we did manage to hold two meetings in 2020, totaling six championship rounds and Max Symonds ended up lifting the club’s premier open class on his new BMW……..well done Max, who emulated his dad Joe’s Premier class win from some twelve years ago back in 2008.

In preparation for this year the lucky ones would usually have been able to get down down to or Spain to test, the not so lucky ones would have been to Mallory Park or Pembrey for a finger freezing test session. But this year, none of that has been possible due to the worldwide travel restrictions.

As at every NG Road Racing meeting we have timed qualifying on Saturday morning with the first of the weekends three championhsip points scoring races in the afternoon. Two more championship races for rach class will take us through Sunday straight after the riders have had the regular morning warm-up sessions.

Each championship class carries twenty-five points for a win, going down the scale to one for fifteenth place and there are a total on twenty one rounds this year spread over the seven meetings. The range of classes take in the full gamut of machines, from Formula125 modified road bikes, all the way up to the tricked out 1000cc superbikes, with everthing catered for in between from 600cc to Mini-Twins and Streetstocks to Suzuki Bandits.

The Brands Hatch Indy circuit is just 1.198 miles long but packs in six big corners. On a bike the machine is never actually upright as the “so-called” straight sections, like the Cooper straight are so short, and are linked by some big corners. Just look at the circuit map, and you will see what I mean. Brands has a great place in UK racing with a track that dates to 1926, although a switch of direction in 1964 to the more recognisable layout proved a hit. It is one on the only venues in the world to hold WSB, F1, GT Car, WTCC, IndyCar and Nascar, and was always rammed back in the late 1990's when Carl Fogarty was at his peak in World Supers pulling in over 80,000 punters for race day.

Josh Day is the NG Road Racing lap record holder here putting in a lap at 91.94mph that is a time of just 47.29sec, set back in March 2017 on his ZX10R Kawasaki when he was battling all weekend with Chrissie Rouse. However, such is the nature of this circuit that Kyle Ryde got his RS GP Honda round in just 50.16 sec in 2011, that’s 86mph, less than 3 seconds slower with a lot less horsepower. Any riders will tell you that half a second around Brands Indy is like the best part of two seconds at most circuits!

Adding extra interest to the weekend NG Road Racing are again running the British National series for 125cc and 250cc GP machinery. This is the only place in the UK that you will see these full-blown ex-GP machines racing for a full British Championship title backed by the ACU (The sports governing body). We also have the Ducati Desmo Due Series, Formula Prostocks runners and for fans sidecars we have the first round of the ever-popular ACU/FSRA British Formula 2 championships.

Next Round: | 15th and 16th May.

The 2021 A.C.U. / F.S.R.A. British F2 Sidecar Championship Championship will be well-aware of the formidable talent which has joined the series in more recent years, and Incorporating The F2 Cup they are set to renew their rivalries after an eighteen month layoff, as 2020 bore witness to the first cancelled campaign since it first ran, back in 1985.

In 2019, Pete Founds / Jevan Walmsley made history, winning a record-breaking fourth consecutive British F2 Championship. As ever, they return to defend their honour, but are rumoured to be making a bold change to Honda power, having sold their trusty LCR Suzuki over the winter months. Founds / Walmsley made very few appearances in 2020 once a non-championship season got underway. One they did attend being a B.S.B. round as a “Wild Card” at Donington Park, where they were quickly on the pace of the top ten regulars, showing they had lost none of their determination, despite taking time out.

Lee Crawford / Scott Hardie (LCR Suzuki), will be all out to win the title that has evaded them for the last four years. They have proved to have the raw pace, but in 2019 were frustrated by a problem with their chassis which saw the chain part company with the outfit on too many occasions! However, Round One – Brands Hatch Indy – N.G.R.R.C. they made clear their intentions in Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th March 2020, taking no fewer than four Super F2 lap records – including here at

Brands Hatch – albeit on the longer G.P. Circuit. They also surprised allcomers, winning at the Donington Park B.S.B. event, on their short F2 outfit against the F600 machines, and dominated the Scarborough Gold Cup at Oliver's Mount winning all four races with ease.

The most recent British F2 Sidecar race winners were Sean Hegarty / James Neave (Baker Honda) at Oulton Park in September 2019, and with Brands being a local circuit for Hegarty, this could well be an advantage for this versatile team, who have also been proving to be a winning combination on a Classic front-exit sidecar in recent months. John Lowther – with new passenger Matty Rostron (LCR Yamaha), will be for hungry for regular podium finishes, as Lowther took his first British F2 win at Mallory Park in 2019.

The championship has seen many changes in its participants since that previous Brands Hatch event, and of the Runners-up in the 2019 F2 Cup, Rob Atkinson / Mark Middleton (BLR Suzuki), will be hoping to “go one twenty four registered drivers who appeared in 2014, only six remain in the series today. Suzuki) and Paul Riley / Lizzie Quinlan (MRE Suzuki).

It is a pleasure to welcome several newcomers to the fray, and expected to be towards the front of the F2 Cup field are Harry Payne, who is ably assisted by former World Champion passenger Mark Wilkes (GP Yamaha). Father and son team Shaun and Ben Chandler (Baker Honda) are also newcomers to the F2 Cup, they have had regular top six finishes at Oliver's Mount in recent years.

Wild-Cards Lewis Blackstock / Paddy Rosney (LCR Honda), will be expected to be amongst those vying for honours in the Super F2 field, having something of a rare outing on their F2 bike, being regular competitors in the RKB-F1 Sidecar Championship.

I would like to pay tribute to our series sponsors, all of whom have remained loyal to the series, despite the difficult times which the pandemic has brought about for many businesses. The A.C.U. have awarded the official “British Championship” title, and along with A.R.C. (Binchester / Newton Aycliffe); A.V. Craine & Son; Hegarty Plant Ltd; Lockside Engineering; Pagid Racing (Breitenbach Rennsport); Rowtec Engineering Maintenance; and Whitby Cottages they continue their long partnerships with the F.S.R.A. We would also like to welcome aboard Leeds Parcel Company, who join as a new sponsor in 2021 – their director, Andy Wilby, is known by many in the paddock as a sidecar driver, and has also assisted several solo and sidecar teams over the last twenty years.

Finally, the F.S.R.A. would like to thank N.G.R.R.C. for hosting us this weekend, and to all their dedicated staff, officials, marshals, medics and all the other volunteers who have come together to get the season underway as early – yet as safely as possible. Organising events even in “normal times” is hectic enough, but under these extraordinary measures of the last twelve months makes these things even trickier!

We hope and anticipate that the country may continue its way out of all restrictions, and by the summer months, the racing season will have returned to a semblance of familiarity and normality. Round two of the series will once again be hosted by N.G.R.R.C., at Donington Park over the weekend of the 15th and 16th May. In the meantime, please keep up to date with F.S.R.A. news, including race reports and up to date championship points on the new website – www.fsra.org.uk
