Preview: Gathering of the Vibes 2008 Chad Berndtson July 29, 2008 Having recently finished an enterprise feature for another publication on the glut of national music festivals and what role that glut creates for regional festivals with a lot more personality, I’m more excited this year for the Gathering of the Vibes than I have been in quite some time. As the man said, “He’d have to be one charming motherfuckin pig”…er, sorry, “Personality goes a long way.” Compared to the Roo- and Coachella-sized behemoths, and a lot of the sexy new kids with names both playful and official-sounding—Rothbury might be a bit of both, and allegedly, it was quite the time—the Vibes is a creakier, more elegant dinosaur. A glorious, humble triceratops of a festival, yes, secure in its size, pleasant in its modest ambition and its abilities, not ostentatious, and kindly manageable. And damn isn’t it great to have it back in New England proper (it returned in 2007 after several years of renovation to Bridgeport’s Seaside Park and a few years at various upstate New York locales)? For this born/bred New Englander, it’s not only in a New England/Tri-State area happy medium, but it fills a still-felt void left by the big Phish festivals of yore and especially the can’t-believe-it’s-been-five-years-now departed Berkshire Mountain Music Festival (1997-2003). (For Berkfest alums from those heady days, monsoon conditions and all, have a scoop of nostalgia on the house) The Vibes doesn’t have the gaudy cache of some festivals, or some of the nationally dazzling headliners.

Fifteen years after Jerry Garcia died on August 9, 1995, his namesake ice cream, Cherry Garcia, continues to be the best-selling flavor for the Ben & Jerry’s brand, according to spokesperson Liz Stewart. This tidbit of information might seem trivial, but it underscores a larger point: the influence of the Grateful Dead’s guiding force continues to be felt in popular culture in ways few people would have imagined when he was a cult figure back in the 1960s and ’70s. Over the decades, Garcia’s reputation grew as he became a symbol of both the counterculture and a do-your-own-thing aesthetic he exemplified with his music. As chief songwriter and lead guitarist with the Grateful Dead, he expanded the boundaries of rock by incorporating a myriad of influences into his songs and bringing jazz-inspired guitar improvisations to the rock concert stage. “Anybody who was not afraid to have a song last for 20 minutes early on was influenced by his music,” said Bruce Hornsby, who scored a chart topping hit in the 1980s before becoming an unofficial Grateful Dead member in the 1990s. “(He) spawned Phish, the Dave Matthews Band, Widespread Panic and I think also the Allman Brothers.” But if you count Garcia only as being the granddaddy of the jam band scene, 1 / 5 Jerry Garcia's long, strange trip..

Abstract: The community surrounding the Grateful Dead, a San Francisco-based psychedelic rock band that had played together for thirty years when its lead guitarist Jerry Garcia died in 1995, still persists. For many Deadheads, as these fans are called, membership in this community has been a major component of their identity and following the band from place to place had provided structure and meaning to their everyday lives. Many older Deadheads continue to participate not only via online, recorded, and print media but also by attending performances of bands including surviving members of the Grateful Dead, cover bands, and other jam bands. This chapter examines the challenges to identity maintenance and community participation faced by Deadheads as they age, the ways in which the community has addressed the aging of its population, and how fans have adapted the ways in which they participate in the community to allow continuity in their identity as Deadheads.

Black Tie Dye Ball
Furthering a Tradition of Grassroots Giving Black Tie Dye Ball Nightclub 9:30 Washington D.C. December 3, 2005 Welcome from the Rex Foundation In the spring of 1984 the first Rex benefit was held in San Rafael, California. For the next 11 years, the Grateful Dead performed Rex benefit concerts across the country that resulted in over $7 million in grants to some 900 programs. In December 2001, the Rex Foundation initiated its renewal efforts by presenting benefit events and extending its reach to a broad base of supporters, and has since granted $512,000 to 79 programs. The Black Tie-Dye Ball is a celebration on many levels. We honor our history while also celebrating the success of our renewal efforts to connect with an extended base of musicians and fans who want to see the Rex Foundation once again fund many worthwhile programs. We extend our deepest appreciation to Dark Star Orchestra for their generous support. They have been part of the Foundation’s renewal efforts from the very beginning. Our firstBlack Tie-Dye Ball was held in Chicago in March 2004. Scott Larned whose memory we honor tonight was key to creating this wonderful event title that we now “take on the road”. We thank special musical guest Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay for helping create with Dark Star Orchestra both a unique musical experience and tapestry of musical past and present. We also thank our Washington, DC Host Committee for helping us create a successful event outside of our home base.
