This time there is no asterisk beside Kevin Koe’s name on the scoreboard at the Tim Hortons Brier. Koe is in Saskatoon as Alberta’s skip and it isn’t because was away winning an Olym- pic gold medal. “Two years ago they said we got there because he wasn’t here. Well, this year he was here. And we won it,” said the skip who now calls home base. Two years ago Martin won the Olympic gold. But Koe validated his provincial title by winning both the Brier and the world championship. Second , who won an Olympic silver medal with Martin at Salt Lake in 2002, said: “We took the asterisk off on that two years ago like when he won the Brier when we (Martin) didn’t play that year. “It was interesting to have Martin here and not play him in the final. I’m sure everybody wanted a Koe-Martin final.” Bottom line is that this will be Koe’s second Brier in the last three years. Koe defeated Brock Virtue’s young Calgary crew 6-3 in a final after Virtue upset Martin for the second time in the event 8-7 in the semi-final. The final was a forgettable boring bit of business as Koe kept Virtue’s yellow rocks out of the rings from beginning to end. Koe and company were almost flawless throughout, winning five straight — Kevin Koe Monday, March 5, 2012 Page 7 three in the A qualifying from the 12-team triple knockout draw, and Martin 7-4 in the B qualifi er. Black Diamond and Dean Ross of Calgary failed to win in three starts. “Yeah, the last time we were at the Brier, Jamie was there, too, and we won it,” said Kevin Koe. “It’s nice when the whole family is going.” 100 Then there’s Simmons, the chiropractor from Moose Jaw, who gave 100 up another shot at winning his home province to play third for Koe.

95 He’s not only going to be going to Saskatoon, he’ll be going with a real 95 chance to win. “I probably am crazy. But it worked out,” said Simmons, who 75 75 skipped a team in the last Brier in Saskatoon and was booed when the team got off to an 0-4 start. “Pat is making all the shots,” said Koe. “And he proved to be a calming, steadying infl uence on this team.” 25 Another Alberta storyline: This is the fi rst Calgary-based Alberta 25 team to play at the Brier since 1994 when Ed Lukowich last skipped 5 a provincial champ. And the all-Calgary provincial fi nal was the fi rst 5 since Harold Breckenridge defeated Mickey Pendergast in 1990. 0 Those last two Calgary teams were a combined 9-13 at the Brier. 0 Koe who has lived in Edmonton and Grande Prairie working in the oil patch for years, has moved to head offi ce in Calgary. Simmons maintains a temporary winter residence in Calgary. Rycroft, Thies- sen and former third, now fi fth man, Blake MacDonald are all from Edmonton. Koe, a fi nancial guru with the NWT government, had to make the long trip west to Whitehorse for the 2012 NWT-Yukon shootout but rolled to six straight wins for the Polar title. With second-year third Tom Naugler, eight-time Brier competitor Brad Chorost- kowski at second and rookie Robert Borden at lead, Koe had the Brier junket locked up after fi ve of his six double-round-robin as- signments. For the record, Koe whipped Yellow- knife clubmate Steve Moss 10-4 in the fi rst round, then thumped George Hilderman of Whitehorse 10-4, Moss 12-5, Jon Solberg of Whitehorse 8-1, Hilderman 9-6 and Solberg 8-7 in the champ’s only tough test of the tournament with the big prize in the bag. Solberg fi nished runnerup with a 3-3 record. He also lost to Moss in the second round. Moss logged a 2-4 record while Hilder- man was 1-5, defeating Moss in the last round. Koe will be hoping to improve on an 3-8 record last year at London. His best Brier record in fi ve tries was his debut 6-5 effort Jamie Koe stretches it out at Regina in 2006.
