MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
THE DECLINE OF VOLUNTEER “ISM” Within the many life cycles of an organization like the Canadian Kennel Club, we see an ebb and flow of active participation from the membership at large. This shifting state of involvement is common to all types of organizations that rely upon a volunteer work force to maintain operations and pump new life into an organization. The needs of the CKC are no different, but in a world where organizations are admittedly suffering because of declining membership, and therefore seeing a drop in their available volunteer force, we at CKC seem to be different! Even though there is less time available to people and even though the cost to an individual volunteer is often more than just time, we at the CKC can con- sider ourselves and our volunteer force to be at the top of the heap when it comes to rallying our troops.
There are at least forty or more permanent committees or councils supporting the overall work of the Club and each need “staffing” to make things work. If the average is approximately 5 permanent vol- unteer members per committee, the total quickly reaches somewhere in the region of some 200 plus active CKC members giving back to the organization on a regular basis throughout the year. These folks constantly give of their time and talents and this applies well beyond the scheduled meetings they attend. This estimated number of volunteers is the absolute minimum! It does not include ad hoc committees or the people who support the members of the committees, or the thousands of volunteers who are actively involved with club activities; organizing shows and trials, participating in their local areas with RDOG Day, supporting the Purina National, hosting CGN testing, providing seminars and educational events within their communities, or individuals working in similar capacity with both Apex Publishing and the CKC Foundation.
It does seem that our dedicated list of CKC volunteers just goes on forever in both the energy expended and pure absolute numbers of people who volunteer. We admittedly discuss amongst ourselves the need for more help more often and more bodies to fill the unlimited tasks, and maybe even complain about the few doing the majority. But let’s just step back for a second. By comparison with other organ- izations, unable to source any volunteer support and crying out for help, consider how lucky we are and how fortunate to have passion as a core element within the make up of the individuals who are the CKC.
Recognizing the efforts of our peers and giving a huge “shout out” by acknowledging their efforts and giving the credit they are due is one of the most valuable investments we can ever make.
In a time when volunteer “ism” is seriously in decline, let’s realize that the CKC is one of the organi- zations for others to look to re: how to do it right! We know how to get behind and support something we are passionate about. It is the passion that makes the difference and through every volunteer act, our passion rises to the surface as an example of who we are and acts as an inspiration to others.
Our volunteers are our heroes and thanks to you all!

40 | MARS 2010 JOIN US FOR THE 2010 ANNUAL PURINA NATIONAL – A CKC CHARITY EVENT
This year, the fourth annual Purina National – a CKC Charity Event will be held at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, from March 12-14, 2010. With over $40,000 in prizes, the event will include three Championship Dog Shows, six Obedience Trials and three Rally Obedience Trials.
We are pleased to announce that, in three years, the Purina National has raised approximately $85,000 for the CKC Foundation – a charitable organization whose mandate is to fund canine medical and genetic research; educate the public on the benefits of dogs in society; and support effective animal control legislation.
It is thanks to our strong supporters, including chief sponsor Nestlé Purina, a team of volunteers and private donations that help make this event such a resounding success.
