Second Conway Poll In Two Weeks to Show KY Race Statistically Tied Our recent late September poll of likely 2010 general election voters shows the race for Kentucky’s U.S. Senate seat is statistically tied.

If the November election for U.S. Senate was held today and the candidates were…for whom would you vote? Early Late Sept. Sept. 2010 2010 Difference -2 -3 Democrat Jack Conway 45 42 Republican 47 45 Don’t know 8 13

This is the second time in as many weeks where the results are within the margin of error, and comes as Conway is withstanding a barrage of misleading, negative attacks by special interests from outside Kentucky. This shows that Conway is well-positioned to win the Senate seat.

Race Tied Despite Paul’s Double Digit Lead In Name ID Currently, Rand Paul is better known than Jack Conway, with 84% name ID to Conway’s 72%. While they have comparable favorable ratings, Paul’s unfavorable rating is 11% higher than Conway’s:

Rand Jack Paul Conway % Name ID 84 72 % Favorable 44 43 % Unfavorable 40 29

Conway Leads By 3 Among Voters Who Know Both Candidates However, once voters learn that Paul’s values are not Kentucky values, they support Conway. Among voters who can identify both candidates, Conway leads by 3:

Knows Both Candidates Difference +3 Democrat Jack Conway 48 Republican Rand Paul 45 Don’t know 7

The Benenson Strategy Group conducted 700 interviews statewide with likely 2010 general election voters. The interviews were conducted September 20-22, 2010. The margin of error for overall results is ±3.70%. BSG’s clients include Governor (D-VA), Senator Jim Webb (D-VA), Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR). Peter Brodnitz, who conducted this survey, was named “Pollster of the Year” by the American Association of Political Consultants in 2007 for his work for Kaine, Webb and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
