Turkey as a hub between east and west Opportunities for the logistics industry

The recently-inaugurated Marmaray railway tunnel under the Bosphorus is only one symbol of just how keen Turkey is to fulfil its role as a gateway between east and west. During a symposium organised by DHL Freight Switzerland on the subject of Eastern Europe, Dogan Taskent, president of the Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Turkey, explained the economic outlook on the Golden Horn.

In economic terms, Turkey is better off today than many Southern European and Balkan countries. Reforms have massive- ly changed the economy over the last ten years. «From a country with closed bor- ders and an inflation rate of 90%–100%, Turkey has changed into a country with a thriving economy and an inflation rate of 10%,» Dogan Taskent explained in Zurich during a symposium organised by DHL Freight Switzerland on the subject of Eastern Europe. ti

Along with road transportation, a total of 90 consignments were moved by inland barge from Derince port to the jetty at the site concerned. It had not been possible to move those pieces by road, due to their outstanding size. In this project, Kita not only acted as a most important logistics provider for the task, but also utilised all of its infrastruc- ture, equipment and logistics engineering skills to ensure the smooth transition of the goods concerned. Bremen forwarder with a strong foothold in Bavaria Heavy goods the easy way – by river

The medium-sized forwarding and logistics company Karl Gross, founded in 1876, has adapted to the changing needs of its customers and markets throughout its history. Its branch office in a southern German river port is an outstanding example of the company’s flexibility.

The transport of oversized cargo is the order of the day for the Ham- burg-based project department of the freight forwarder Karl Gross. The division’s team, led by Thomas Burkhardt and Steffen Fulst, is constantly in search of routes and vehicles which are capable of han- dling the cargo and individual requirements of the company’s clients. s os Gr

There are various international market leaders in their fields among Karl Gross’ industrial machinery and equipment transport customers, including firms from the food technology industry. The project cargo experts from Hamburg have seen the vol- ume of all the parts that they deliver directly to construc- tion sites in Asia and South America grow significantly over the past few years. «Our experience has shown that machines and plants used in the food processing industry are increasingly pushing the limits of what can be shipped on trucks in Germany with what we may call normal special per- mits,» Fulst elaborates.

The northern German freight forwarder has responded to the market situation by establishing a branch office in the inland port on the Danube in the Bavarian city of Regensburg. A further benefit of the new branch office is that it puts the company in close geographical proximity to its customers in southern Germany, making it possible for them to consult personally with customers on-site, «basically, at the drop of a hat» as one shrewd freight forwarder pointed out. The company’s Regensburg office is located in the Bayernhafen. «Our office site is right in the port, in sight of the Danube. On 17 September the first Ilyushin IL-76 of the Russian airline took off from Munich airport headed for the north of the European part of the Russian Federation.
