Nielsen Music has also had an amazing, transformative year. Technological advancements and new partnerships have allowed us to provide robust, comprehensive data in more accessible, customizable and useful ways in 2017. Over the past year, we received a record number of requests for Nielsen Music research and insight reports. Welcome to the Nielsen Music Year-End Report, which examines the trends that shaped the Paul Shaver Canadian music industry in 2017 with definitive consumption figures and charts. Vice President/ Head of Nielsen Music Canada Overall consumption of albums, songs and On-Demand Audio streaming grew 13.6% year-over- year. On-Demand Audio streaming offset decreases in track and album sales and, on December 3, for the first time in history, it surpassed the 900 million per week mark. Ed Sheeran led all artists in Canada with overall consumption and had the top-selling album of the year. Six Canadians had No. 1 albums on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart in 2017, including The Weeknd’s Starboy, Drake’s More Life, Arcade Fire’s Everything Now, Shania Twain’s Now, Pierre Lapointe’s La Science Du Coeur and Gord Downie’s Introduce Yerself. The passing of Gord Downie captured the nation’s attention. In the week following his death, The Tragically Hip’s overall consumption increased by 1,000% over the previous week. Also, six of the group’s albums re-entered the Billboard Canadian Albums chart. -

Print this Article Page 1 of 2 CLOSE WINDOW Published: 2009-07-07 McCartney tickets won’t go for half price By AMY SMITH Staff Reporter Paul McCartney fans hoping for half-price tickets for this Saturday’s concert in Halifax are going to be out of luck, says the promoter. There were a number of deals offering two tickets for the price of one in the final days before last month’s Bon Jovi concert at Magnetic Hill in Moncton, which attracted about 33,000 fans. And before last weekend’s Virgin Festival in Halifax became a free event, promoters said those who had bought a ticket could bring a friend for free. About 10,000 showed up for that event. But Greg Cox of Power Promotional Events said Monday there were no deals in the works to buy one ticket and get one free for this concert. (His firm was not involved in either the Bon Jovi concert or Virgin Festival.) "I am not aware of anything (like that)," he said in an interview Monday. He said Coke Zero is offering two adult tickets, two tickets for children under 12 and some Coke promotional product for $250, plus service charges. The promoter said there are plenty of reasons to catch the show — Sir Paul’s only Canadian performance this year. "Paul McCartney at 67 is not likely going to make it back to Halifax again," Mr. Cox said. "There’s too many other places in the world that he’s never played that he would like to play. -

The organization was formed in 1985 as an acoustic music club & is celebrating its 25th anniversary in early December. As well as promoting over 70 concerts a year, the club also programs “The SummerTyne Fest Outdoor Stage”, which is part of the Americana Weekender, The Evolution Festival Ballast Hill stage, and the Boss Sounds Reggae Festival. THE MUSIC DISTRIBUTION INDUSTRY IN CANADA 2006 BY LARRY LEBLANC FEB. 2006 This report has been prepared by Larry LeBlanc for the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB). The purpose of this document is to provide a profile of the English and French-language components of distribution of the Canadian-owned label and artist sector as well as Canadian artists signed or distributed by multinationals in Canada. The report specifically discusses changes in the music distribution sector in Canada since 1998. As well, such newly emerging factors as the rise of widespread Internet-based downloading; the rise of music subscription services; and the use of ringtones, ringtunes and podcasting in affecting music sales are also discussed. The report indicates that Canadian music retail has become more consolidated and more selective with product choices. Major music retailers carry a different product mix today than a decade ago. There are fewer music CDs, and more film-related DVD and computer game product. Although radio remains a critical vehicle for the Canadian record industry, labels and retailers cite a waning impact of the medium on overall sales. The study is based on a review of existing documentation, secondary research as well as analysis and findings drawn from 11 interviews conducted by Larry LeBlanc, as the principal source of primary research. Music OVERVIEW Canada's small market size, and a sizable support infrastructure is enabling the domestic industry to develop distinct acts for audiences home and abroad. In the past three years, global markets have embraced a new wave of formidable Canadian English-language rock acts including: Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Death From Above 1979, Feist, Stars, the Dears, Alexisonfire, Metric, Bedouin Soundclash, and Hot Hot Heat; as well as such French-language acts as Corneille, and Lynda Lemay. -
