  • New Orleans Nostalgia
NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard True Bohemian Rhapsody The true “Bohemian Rhapsody” is neither “Caprice Bohémien” by Rachmaninoff, nor is it the 1975 hit by the rock group Queen. Freddie Mercury and Queen provided the world with its extremely popular (yet intensely cryptic) “Bohemian Rhapsody”, a stream-of-consciousness nightmare of a song that offered lyrics like: “I see a little silhouetto of a man, Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?” Research indicates that “Bohemian Rhapsody” is the second most played song on British radio and jukeboxes, and in clubs collectively, after “A Whiter Shade of Pale” by Procol Harum. Could it be because both songs incorporate the word “fandango” into their lyrics? But is there a song more truly worthy of the title “Bohemian Rhapsody”, especially in a place that has been called America’s most Bohemian city? And how was it that Carnegie Mellon University professor Richard Florida (author of “The Rise of the Creative Class”) gave New Orleans a fairly low standing in his “Bohemian Index”? How could it be that the Crescent City (with its French Quarter, musicians, writers, artists, eccentric characters, jazz and funky vibe) ranked below Salt Lake City? And why the beaucoup boo hoos over such a low boho rating (41st out of the 49 largest metro areas)? These questions will soon be answered. Bohemians refer, of course, to the inhabitants of the former Kingdom of Bohemia, located in the modern day Czech Republic. Their leader back in the day was “Good King Wenceslas”, Duke of Bohemia, who cruised around Prague in the early tenth century.

  • PROCOL HARUM 2014 BIOGRAPHY Procol Harum Are Still Going Strong
PROCOL HARUM 2014 BIOGRAPHY Procol Harum are still going strong. March 2014 sees a new double CD, Inside/Outside, celebrating over forty years of studio and live recordings. In addition the spring will see a new download-only release, Some Long Road, featuring tracks from the band’s 2012 US tour. Alongside this Procol continue to tour many parts of the world, and are considering options on three continents at the moment. You could not be blamed for thinking that, with the monumental success of Procol's first smash hit, the band just stopped there, like so many others. Even the recently-awarded accolade of ‘most- played single of the past seventy-five years’ has not quelled their need to go forward: hence 2014’s new live album. In the past couple of years they have released ten re-mastered CD albums, plus the 2CD anthology Secrets of the Hive (all generally available in Europe, and sourceable on import); their DVDs In Concert with the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Live at Union Chapel have been widely acclaimed. There’s also a special 4-disc CD/DVD box-set compendium – aptly entitled All this and More – featuring 68 of the band’s many unique compositions: this prompted Classic Rock magazine to observe, ‘it’s small wonder The Who’s Tommy and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody can be traced to Procol’s influence’. It could be termed a plethora of Procol. The quality of writing and performance has remained Procol Harum’s gold standard through the gradually-mutating line-ups: each participating musician has kept the ideas flowing and prevented Procol from resting on their laurels.

  • Deja Vu the King's College
Alyce Oosterhuis Deja Vu The King's College ABSTRACT The following short story represents one psychologist's attempt to describe in narrative form what can occur when we find ourselves wanting to "rescue" our clients. This narrative is an example of the oft-described dictum that one cannot be a professional counsellor to friends. However, the story tells more than that. More than anything else, it illustrates that, for our clients, the obstacles to psychological healing can be our own perceptions and expectations of their eventual recovery. After four years of visiting with a friend who was incapacitated by anxiety and depression, this psychologist's expectations for a slow reconstruction of healthy coping skills created an evening of mishap. The patient is doing fine; the doctor has some things on which to work now.

  • A Browner Shade of Buffalo: Music, Color, and Perception in Oscar Zeta Acosta’S New Chicano Identity
A Browner Shade of Buffalo: Music, Color, and Perception in Oscar Zeta Acosta’s New Chicano Identity Alexei Nowak University of California, Los Angeles And although my eyes were open, They might just as well have been closed. —Procol Harum, “A Whiter Shade of Pale” 1967 Y mis ojos ya, ya, ya vacíos Van, van rodando sin cesar. —José Feliciano, “Con su blanca palidez” 1968 Oscar Zeta Acosta remains a difficult figure in the history of Chicano literature, partly due to the excess and ugliness of his two novels— Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo (1972) and The Revolt of the Cockroach People (1973)—and partly due to the excesses of the man himself, whether excessive intoxication, cultural hybridity, or sheer girth.1 This essay will reconsider Acosta’s relationship to the 1960’s counterculture by demonstrating the central role of psyche- delic rock music in the Brown Buffalo and in its vision of Chicano identity. While scholars have long debated Acosta’s relationship to the counterculture,2 particularly the Beats, much of this work sets up the counterculture and the emerging Chicano movement in opposition and then seeks to determine to how successfully Acosta’s novels break from the former in order to join the latter. In doing so, these scholars not only present the counterculture as culturally daring but politically conservative—thus coining the suggestively oxymoronic category of the so-called “mainstream” counterculture—but more importantly as fundamentally white. To do so is to erase first of all the work of ear- lier counterculture writers of color such as Leroi Jones/Amiri Baraka, Bob Kaufman, and John Rechy, and second the many Chicanos of the late 1960’s and 1970’s who, as Randy J.
