  • Beginner Project Whittled Peg Rack
WOODWORKS: BEGINNER PROJECT WHITTLED PEG RACK Historically, peg racks like this one were hidden. They were fastened to the back walls of wardrobes in the days before wire coat hangers were invented. But this one’s too nice to hide! • You can adjust the length of your peg rack to fit any wall, and you can mount as many or as few pegs as you like. They don’t all have to look alike, either. As your whittling technique improves, the pegs will become more consistent. This project gives beginning woodworking students the opportunity to develop their whittling skills while doing some basic measuring, cutting, drilling and assembling to produce a great-looking household necessity. If you haven’t done it much before, you’ll find that whittling is relaxing and enjoyable, not to mention a nice break from machine work. You can also choose to cut the pegs with a scrollsaw to get some practice on that machine. And after you build the piece, you’ll learn how to apply and use finishes to protect the wood and keep it looking beautiful. –1– CONTINUED - WOODWORKS: BEGINNER PROJECT WHITTLED PEG RACK TOOLS REQUIRED Hand Tools Power Tools Miscellaneous – Fine (000) steel wool – Whittling knife – Drill or drill press with – Pencil (for Polyshades®) – Block plane 1/2" drill bit – Safety glasses – Respirator – Table saw – Carpenter’s glue – Gloves for finishing – Scrollsaw, stationary belt – Sandpaper – Mineral spirits and drum sanders (for – Clean, lint-free cloths – Water-filled metal container machine-made pegs) – Small square with tight-fitting lid – Woodcarver’s glove – Minwax® Wood Finish™ – Leather thumb guard Stain Brush SHOPPING LIST CUTTING LIST 1x4 pine or other softwood (whittled pegs) or oak or other Key Pcs.

  • 2020 Spoon Gathering June 4, 5 & 6, 2020
2020 Spoon Gathering June 4, 5 & 6, 2020 Join us in Milan for 3 enjoyable days of carving, green woodworking, demonstrations, workshops, presentations, networking, and friendship. Mission statement. Sharing the knowledge of carving spoons and related handcrafts, while creating an inclusive gathering for all. Preparations for the 2020 Spoon Gathering are a work in progress. Some details may change as the event draws closer. If you have not attended before, please contact the school so that you can be added to the email list and receive any updated information as it comes available. Feel free to contact the school with any questions. 1 The Spoon Gathering The seed for a unique green woodworking event was planted more than a decade ago by artist and MVAS spoon carving instructor, Frank Foltz. Frank and the early organizers of the Spoon Gathering envisaged the creation of an event that would encourage carvers and spoon enthusiasts to gather once a year to celebrate the humble wooden spoon. What started as a small gathering of spoon carvers and enthusiasts in St. Paul has grown into a vibrant and entertaining 3-day festival of carving, friendship, and learning. Each year, carvers from across the United States and beyond converge on Milan to celebrate the wooden spoon, an international symbol of family, meals, and friendship. The Spoon Gathering today offers a family friendly event for those interested in wood spoon carving and traditional handcrafts. Demonstrations, workshops, and presentations are varied and are sourced from not just the world of spoon carving, but also related arts, skills, and knowledge.

  • The “Unknown” Maker of Marquetry Is Attributable As Buchschmid & Gretaux. I Hope You Will Publish This for Your Readers
The “Unknown” Maker Of Marquetry Is Attributable As Buchschmid & Gretaux. I hope you will publish this for your readers because it answers a question regarding an “unknown” maker of pieces owned by your previous readers. Like all antiques, these objects were made in the context of their times, and that context stays lost until somebody interested in it digs it up later. My wife and I purchased a piece of marquetry in 2018 from an online auction, local to Northern Virginia, in a lot with other home décor, described as “Germany scene wood inlay picture” shown in the attached pictures. Fig 1: Front of “Hildesheim Knochenhauer-Amtshaus”, 9 x 12 inches framed. 1 Fig 2: Rear view of original frame; note two labels, paper taping, horizontally grained wooden back, and two-pin triangular hanger. 2 Fig 3: Close-up of labels. My parents emigrated from Germany to the U.S. in the 1950s and eventually brought back lots of ‘German stuff’ passed through our family, that I grew up with. So what follows is based on not just objective facts, but also on the context of those facts that I experienced through immersion in a culture that my parents brought with them to the U.S. As with every piece, the question is always “who made it, and when?” Here, by answering the “when” first, the “who” becomes apparent. I. “WHEN” it was made Every detail is an important clue, but I draw your attention first to the labels on the back of each of the five (5) pieces, noting the following: 1) the misspellings of “INLAYD” and “COLRED” – this identical wording appears on two pieces found on your own website.
