She is vice- president of the European Economic Association, and director of the Gender, Growth and Labour Markets in Low-Income Countries program and of the research program in Development Economics at CEPR. She is co-editor of Microeconomic Insights and Economica. Her research focuses on how monetary incentives and social relationships interact to shape individual choices within organizations and in labor markets. Her research has been awarded the IZA Young Labor Economist Prize, the Carlo Alberto Medal, the Ester Boserup Prize, and the Yrjö Jahnsson Award. LARRY KATZ Lawrence F. Katz is the Elisabeth Allison Professor of Economics at Harvard University and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. His research focuses on issues in labor economics and the economics of social problems. He is the author (with Claudia Goldin) of The Race between Education and Technology (Harvard University Press, 2008), a history of U.S. economic inequality and the roles of technological change and the pace of educational advance in affecting the wage structure. Katz also has been studying the impacts of neighborhood poverty on low- income families as the principal investigator of the long-term evaluation of the Moving to Opportunity program, a randomized housing mobility experiment. -

Field Experiments in Development Economics1 Esther Duflo Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Department of Economics and Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab) BREAD, CEPR, NBER January 2006 Prepared for the World Congress of the Econometric Society Abstract There is a long tradition in development economics of collecting original data to test specific hypotheses. Over the last 10 years, this tradition has merged with an expertise in setting up randomized field experiments, resulting in an increasingly large number of studies where an original experiment has been set up to test economic theories and hypotheses. This paper extracts some substantive and methodological lessons from such studies in three domains: incentives, social learning, and time-inconsistent preferences. The paper argues that we need both to continue testing existing theories and to start thinking of how the theories may be adapted to make sense of the field experiment results, many of which are starting to challenge them. This is perhaps due to a conjunction of the lack of readily available high-quality, large-scale data sets commonly available in industrialized countries and the low cost of data collection in developing countries, though development economists also like to think that it has something to do with the mindset of many of them. -

Email: [email protected] 1 1 Introduction Abstract We use a unique natural experiment to shed light on the distribution of information in speculative markets. In June 2011, Betfair - a U.K. betting exchange - levied a tax of up to 60% on all future profits accrued by the top 0.1% of profitable traders. Such a move appears to have driven at least some of these traders off the exchange, taking their information with them. We investigate the effect of the new tax on the forecasting capacity of the exchange (our measure of the market’s incorporation of information into the price). We find that there was scant decline in the forecasting capacity of the exchange - relative to a control market - suggesting that the bulk of information had hitherto been held by the majority of traders, rather than the select few affected by the rule change. This result is robust to the choice of forecasting measure, the choice of forecasting interval, and the choice of race type. This provides evidence that more than a few traders are typically involved in the price discovery process in speculative markets. It has also had such a form as competition between relevance and rigor, although both must be taken care. The three research methods (field experiment, action research and design research) are sometimes recommended to be used interchangeable. But we shall show they are quite different. We try to analyze and describe their boundaries and division of labor between practitioners and researchers. We shall also correct some long-lasting misconceptions and propose some further research topic. Introduction Mathiassen and Nielsen (2008) studied the articles published in the Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems during 20 years and found that empirical articles have a great share of the all the published articles. Majority of the authors are from the Scandinavian countries. This seems to show that practice is much appreciated among the Scandinavian researchers and practical emphasis is characteristic in the Scandinavian research culture. We shall in this paper consider three empirical research methods (field experiment, action research and design research). -

List University of Chicago1 4 July 2020 Abstract While empirical economics has made important strides over the past half century, there is a recent attack that threatens the foundations of the empirical approach in economics: external validity. Certain dogmatic arguments are not new, yet in some circles the generalizability question is beyond dispute, rendering empirical work as a passive enterprise based on frivolity. Such arguments serve to caution even the staunchest empirical advocates from even starting an empirical inquiry in a novel setting. In its simplest form, questions of external validity revolve around whether the results of the received study can be generalized to different people, situations, stimuli, and time periods. This study clarifies and places the external validity crisis into perspective by taking a unique glimpse into the grandest of trials: The External Validity Trial. A key outcome of the proceedings is an Author Onus Probandi, which outlines four key areas that every study should report to address external validity. Such an evaluative approach properly rewards empirical advances and justly recognizes inherent empirical limitations. 1Some of the people represented in this trial are creations of the mind, as are the phrases and statements that I attribute to the real people in this trial. Specifically, these words do not represent actual statements from the real people, rather these are words completely of my creation. I have done my best to maintain historical accuracy. Synthetic Control Method: Inference, Sensitivity Analysis and Confidence Sets∗ Sergio Firpo† Vitor Possebom‡ Insper Yale University September 1st, 2017 Abstract We extend the inference procedure for the synthetic control method in two ways. First, we impose a parametric form to the treatment assignment probabilities that includes, as a particular case, the uniform distribution that is assumed by Abadie et al.(2015). By changing the value of this parameter, we can analyze the sensitiveness of the test's decision to deviations from the usual uniform distribution assumption. Second, we modify the RMSPE statistic to test any sharp null hypothesis, including, as a specific case, the null hypothesis of no effect whatsoever analyzed by Abadie et al.(2015). Based on this last extension, we invert the test statistic to estimate confidence sets that quickly show the point-estimates' precision, and the test's significance and robustness. We also extend these two tools to other test statistics and to problems with multiple outcome variables or multiple treated units. Furthermore, in a Monte Carlo experiment, we find that the RMSPE statistic has good properties with respect to size, power and robustness. Finally, we illustrate the usefulness of our proposed tools by reanalyzing the economic impact of ETA's terrorism in the Basque Country, studied first by Abadie & Gardeazabal(2003) and Abadie et al.(2011). REFLECTIONS ON EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES IN THE LAW* Hans Zeiselt Much of the law's reasoning turns on the effects of the rules it creates or enforces. Normally these effects are alleged or implied, but rarely proven. Yet during the last decades, first the natural sciences and, learn- ing from them, the social sciences have developed techniques of ek- perimentation that would allow firmer determinations of what a rule of law does or does not accomplish.' The basic tool (and also the paradigm for retrospective analysis) is the controlled experiment. Its essence is simple: The objects or people on which the experiment is to be performed are divided randomly, that is, by some lottery device, into two groups; the experimental treatment is then applied to the one group and withheld from the other, the control group. If an effect is found in the experimental group that is absent from the control group, it can be attributed to the experimental treatment, since at the time of the prior random selection the two groups had been strictly comparable, and in fact interchangeable.' And randomization assures that whatever the outcome of the experiment, it is possible to calculate the degree of certainty that can be attached to it.
