Pontos fortes Bibliografia Índice de Documentos de suporte à Dissertação 2 Nota Prévia Uma Dissertação de Mestrado é a porta de entrada para a especialização do conhecimento e para o universo restrito daqueles que sabem que sabem, construída laboriosamente a partir da vivências pessoais e de muito e estrénuo trabalho. Nascido em 1949, aluno de História, licenciado em 1981, com a cabeça cheia de apriorismos e nostalgias pouco sustentadas, procurei aproveitar este desafio como algo a não perder. O apoio dos meus professores e orientadores muito contribuiu para isso. Para mais e no meu caso pessoal, este Mestrado constitui, um enorme desafio pessoal à preguiça e à acomodação, uma vez que é feito, felizmente, sem quaisquer perspectivas de progressão profissional, devido e graças à minha condição de aposentado. Representa um enorme esforço de trabalho intenso, uma vez que considero o Mestrado como um todo e desde o início e para o prosseguir, me esforcei por ser o melhor aluno, um melhor colega e um melhor cidadão. É testemunho também de um sincero esforço de humildade pessoal, para alguém que durante a sua vida profissional e devido à natureza desta, tudo fez para que sobretudo, prevalecesse o reconhecimento, por vezes ingente, pessoal e institucional Representa ainda uma tentativa sincera de contribuir para o criar de valor académico e científico de uma Instituição, a UMa – Universidade da Madeira, que carece de contribuições cada vez mais válidas para o cimentar da sua importância institucional. Constitui ainda mais e suplementarmente a satisfação de um sonho adiado, pelas circunstâncias da vida pessoal e profissional e um grito de incentivo para que, todos aqueles, como eu, aposentados, se não deixem acomodar nem estiolar. Representa igualmente a possibilidade de ajudar desinteressadamente o meu País e a minha Região a procurar e, se possível, encontrar respostas para os enormes desafios económicos e sociais que se Lhes perfilam no futuro próximo. Foi nosso objectivo essencial juntar os nossos conhecimentos e experiências pessoais e profissionais, aos conhecimentos do mundo universitário, no universo complexo de professores e alunos e desta forma enriquecermo-nos e enriquecer os outros. Possa finalmente este Mestrado ser uma porta para um universo de conhecimento cada vez mais especializado, o qual me venha a permitir tornar-me um cidadão e um aluno mais responsável e solidário com a minha Universidade e o meu País. 3 Resumo O porto do Funchal é uma realidade recente. Historicamente podemos considerar que existe porto desde o final do Século XIX, muito embora já com D. José I tivesse havido uma Determinação real para proceder à construção de uma infra-estrutura portuária, o que só parcialmente foi cumprido, num processo apenas terminado em 2011. Até aí e desde a colonização, o desembarque de pessoas e bens era feito no calhau, ao ritmo e sabor das levadias e dos estados do mar e da força humana, numa tradição que ficou expressa em inúmeras obras e registos de viagem e igualmente no Pilar de Banger, mandado construir por um britânico, como base de guindaste para descargas. No século XX, o porto do Funchal, ao mesmo tempo que era local de comércio e descarga de mercadorias, assim como de passageiros, foi progressivamente assistindo ao surgir de um novo conceito em matéria de turismo, não já apenas e só como mero transporte, mas tendo como objectivo o cruzeiro. Esta Dissertação pretende estudar, quantificar e se possível teorizar, ainda que de forma sucinta, a importância que esse novo tipo de lazer, a partir de agora, por nós designado de cruzeiro, teve, tem e esperamos venha a ter, na nossa economia regional e no bem- estar e progresso económico dos múltiplos intervenientes nesta actividade. Para nos apoiar neste desiderato, para além da teoria, construímos um inquérito, que foi apresentado ao turista de cruzeiro, durante a sua escala e a fruição desta, por si mesmo, em passeios a pé pela cidade do Funchal ou guiado por um guia, conhecendo o potencial do nosso porto. Este inquérito foi feito em colaboração com a APRAM, o SNATTI e a EUROMAR, assim como com outros intervenientes nesta cadeia de valor, tendo nós, conceptores e aplicadores do mesmo, procurado seguir uma linha de orientação que nos permitisse a comparação dos resultados, com inquéritos desenvolvidos anteriormente. O nosso objectivo essencial é não apenas o de prosseguir num percurso de valorização pessoal e académica mas também procurar dotar com dados quantificáveis, todos os parceiros deste negócio da nossa região e contribuir de uma forma activa e responsável na definição e planeamento do nosso melhor recurso económico, o Turismo. Esta Dissertação é, por agora, um objectivo em si, mas não se esgota como tal e a nossa missão não termina hic et nunc, uma vez que trabalhamos por mero prazer intelectual, sentimos que somos apoiados institucional e pessoalmente e temos a certeza de que o que estamos a desenvolver, poderá ser útil para a nossa economia e para a nossa Região. Palavras-Chave: Porto do Funchal, Cruzeiros, Inquérito, Cruzeirista 4 Abstract Funchal harbour is a recent feat. Historically one may consider that the harbour has existed since the end of the 19th century, although King José I had in his time issued an Order for the construction of a port infrastructure. This Order was only partially fulfilled, since the process was concluded in 2011. From then on until colonisation, people and goods disembarked on the calhau (rock), swaying to the rhythm and whims of the sea and human strength, a tradition that has been enshrined in various works and travel records, as well as set in stone with the Pilar de Banger tower, which was built by a British national and used as a crane for transporting goods from ships. While both a space for trading and for unloading goods, as well as passengers, in the 20th century Funchal harbour witnessed the coming about of a new concept of tourism. It was no longer a matter of ships being used solely as a means of transport, rather the goal of embarking on a cruise. With this dissertation I plan on studying, quantifying and, if possible, theorizing, albeit succinctly, on the importance that this new type of leisure which, from now on is referred to as the cruise, had, has and we hope will have on the regional economy and well-being and economic development of the various parties to this activity. In order to assist me in this task, in addition to theory I have designed a survey that was presented to cruise tourists while on land in order to ascertain how they spent their time here, their strolls through Funchal city or on guided tours, the way in which they got to know the potential of our harbour. The survey was conducted together with APRAM, SNATTI and EUROMAR, as well as with other players in this value chain. As the designer and implementing party of the survey, I sought to follow a guideline that would enable me to compare the results with prior surveys.
