Cleanliness Is First Step of Development : Vasundhara by : INVC Team Published on : 2 Oct, 2014 03:00 PM IST Cleanliness Is First Step Of Development : Vasundhara By : INVC Team Published On : 2 Oct, 2014 03:00 PM IST INVC, Jaipur, Governor Shri Kalyan Singh, in presence of the Chief Minister Smt. Vasundhara Raje, administered the oath of cleanliness to the people of Rajasthan at a state-level function of 'Swach Rajasthan- Swach Bharat' or 'Clean Rajasthan- Clean India' campaign on Thursday at village Dhankya in Jaipur district. After this, they also launched the Clean India campaign in the state by wielding brooms at Dhankya Railway Station. The Governor called upon the people of the state to start cleanliness from themselves. Hygienic living was a duty of all us, he said and added that sanitized living of the community was a must for better health. Mahatma Gandhi also dreamt of a clean India and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had called for making it a peoples' movement, Shri Singh said. All citizens should join the campaign to realize that dream, he added. Calling it a radical thought of the Prime Minister, Governor Singh said that it was a very big campaign. It was above the divides of rich-poor, small-big and female- male, he said. He said that Bapu gave us Free India and we had to make it Clean India. Shri Singh said that in this age of development, not having a toilet for our mothers, sisters, wives and daughters was a kind of blot on us. For a healthy and dignified life he called upon the people to work according to the pledge for Clean India. He said that people should keep their streets, mohallas, villages, towns, cities, state and the country sanitized. For this, all individuals had to take the initiative, he added. Governor Singh called Dhankya a historical place and stated that a historical campaign was being launched from here. Paying tribute to great thinker Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay he said that Shri Upadyay was multi-faceted personality. Panditji promoted the idea of Unitary Humanism which was over and above all the other isms, he said. Calling this idea to be realistic and philosophical Shri Singh said that the humanity was described in its complete and integrated form. On this occasion the Governor also paid tribute to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri. He said that Gandhiji's words acted as mantras and Shastriji was a true son of Mother India. Gandhiji's journey started from Mohandas to culminate at Mahatma, the Governor added. Governor Shri Singh and Chief Minister Smt. Raje paid floral tribute to Pt Deendayal Upadyay in Quarter No. 10 of Dhankya Railway Station. Prior to this, the event was inaugurated by the Governor and the CM by lighting of lamps. The governor also distributed cheques of prize money to six persons under the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan. The Chief Minister suggested to link development and progress with sanitation and appealed to the people to join this ambitious campaign by keeping the environment around them hygienic. Then only the idea of Clean India- Clean Rajasthan would actually take shape. Cleanliness would support investment, industries and tourism in the state, which would lead to progress of the state and the country. Nobody would be able to do it alone and everybody had to join walk along for this. Participation of all citizens of the state could develop a sparkling and shining Rajasthan, she added. Smt. Raje said that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had a massive pledge to make Swach Bharat that is Clean India from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Now, every citizen should participate in this campaign to make the country and the state clean. She said that the state government had focused on sanitation, construction of toilets in schools and making the entire state Open Defecation Free in next four years. She said that for making toilets in schools and their maintenance special endowment would be taken out of the local MP/MLA development funds. The CM declared for sanction of Rs 70 crore for sanitation works in the JDA region covering Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC), two other municipalities and village panchayats. As per allocation, Rs 50 lakh each would be given to 120 panchayats, Rs 2.5 crore each to Chomun and Bagru municipalities and Rs 5 crore to the JMC. Construction of drains, public toilets, CC roads etc may be constructed with this amount. She appealed for proper utilization of these allocations and thus present an example before the entire state. Smt. Raje said that the JDA had already done www.internationalnewsandviews.com correspondence with the Indian Railways at appropriate level for exchange of land of the birthplace of Pt. Deendayal Upadyaya. It would be given a formal shape very soon, after which the holy place would be developed. She also greeted the people on birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and Durgashtmi and Dussera. THE SAFFRON WAVE MEETS THE SILENT REVOLUTION: WHY THE POOR VOTE FOR HINDU NATIONALISM IN INDIA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Tariq Thachil August 2009 © 2009 Tariq Thachil THE SAFFRON WAVE MEETS THE SILENT REVOLUTION: WHY THE POOR VOTE FOR HINDU NATIONALISM IN INDIA Tariq Thachil, Ph. D. Cornell University 2009 How do religious parties with historically elite support bases win the mass support required to succeed in democratic politics? This dissertation examines why the world’s largest such party, the upper-caste, Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has experienced variable success in wooing poor Hindu populations across India. Briefly, my research demonstrates that neither conventional clientelist techniques used by elite parties, nor strategies of ideological polarization favored by religious parties, explain the BJP’s pattern of success with poor Hindus. Instead the party has relied on the efforts of its ‘social service’ organizational affiliates in the broader Hindu nationalist movement. The dissertation articulates and tests several hypotheses about the efficacy of this organizational approach in forging party-voter linkages at the national, state, district, and individual level, employing a multi-level research design including a range of statistical and qualitative techniques of analysis. In doing so, the dissertation utilizes national and author-conducted local survey data, extensive interviews, and close observation of Hindu nationalist recruitment techniques collected over thirteen months of fieldwork. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Tariq Thachil was born in New Delhi, India. He received his bachelor’s degree in Economics from Stanford University in 2003.

  • Introduction
Introduction On 4th April, 1980 the National Executive of the Janata Party adopted a resolution prohibiting members of RSS to continue in the Janata Party. This resolution was sequel to the fears entertained by Chandrashekhar’s Group and a few Socialists who had not left the Janata Party when the split caused by Ch. Charan Singh took place and others that the erstwhile Jana Sangh would capture the party on account its mass base and large army of dedicated workers. This development was anticipated by leaders and workers of the Jana Sangh and RSS background in Janata Party. So they had asked Jana Sangh workers from all over the country to assemble at Delhi before the meeting of the National Executive of Janata Party and to be prepared for all eventualities. The resolution adopted by the National Executive of Janata Party was not acceptable to erstwhile Jana Sangh constituent and to several other leaders and persons in Janata Party who had no RSS background. The Jana Sangh constituent had sincerely worked towards the strengthening and smooth working of the Janata Party. Even though it constituted the largest single constituent of the Janata Party and had a larger popular base in the country it did not ask for proportionate share either in Janata Government or in Janata Party and was content with whatever was given to it. The Jana Sangh constituent wanted Janata Party to succeed and emerge as an alternative to Congress which had ruled the country for three decades prior to 1977. In this background, there was a feeling of regret and unhappiness as well as of good riddance and relief in the Jana Sangh 2 • Party Document Vol-10 workers.
