Background • An Army veteran and former police officer, Higgins uses his service experience to promote national and border security on the House Homeland Security Committee • Deep southern Louisianan roots; raised on a horse ranch in St. Tammany Parish, and later served for six years in the , attaining the rank of staff sergeant • After serving, Higgins worked as manager of a car dealership for several years before returning to uniform service and becoming a patrol officer in 2004 for the Opelousas City Police Department; resigned in 2007, before disciplinary action and suspension without pay were imposed on him for "unnecessary force" and "misconduct" • In 2011, he joined the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office and rose to the rank of captain; tenure marked by his videos for the Crime Stoppers program, where he persuaded suspects to surrender by forcefully implying they will be caught and redemption would be easier if they turned themselves in, earning himself the title of "Cajun John Wayne" • After resigning from the Sheriff's Office, he and his wife sequestered themselves in prayer for a couple of weeks and took the messages that arrived requesting him to seek federal office as a sign from God; ran for office and was elected to Congress in 2017 • Serves as the ranking member on the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border Security, Facilitation, and Operations, where he vocally supported Trump's 2017 executive order restricting travel to certain countries and voted against an amnesty bill for undocumented immigrants • Previously served on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, where he worked to improve VA health care and better facilitate modern "community-focused care" • In 2020, he has vocally opposed the Black Lives Matter movement and protests against police shootings; voted against the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, saying the "bill is reflective of the broader anti-law enforcement and Defund the Police rhetoric coming from the left" and defies his unwavering support for law enforcement • Voted in Congress on January 6, 2021 to object to the certification of Electoral College results affirming President 's election
