Spring Bulbs

We hope you enjoyed the crocuses in the verges on Causeway Head Road. They made a cheerful sight to herald the spring. We intend to extend this planting in October and expect the present flowers to increase and thicken out by next spring. New plantings of daffodils in Townhead Road, under the trees, were a success, although they were a little late flowering. We will be planting more in the Village in the autumn. Anyone willing to help will make a difference, and of course any donations towards the costs will be gratefully received, and any suggestions for areas you might like to see planted. Thank you to the many people in the village who responded to the appeal for "snowdrops in the green" and who donated an estimated 8 -10,000 bulbs. About twenty Brownies, Rainbows their Leaders and some parents planted these around the King Snowdrops being planted on the Village Ecgbert Stone on the Green on a beautiful in spring sunshine. sunny day at the end of April. On the 25th January 1953, a tragedy occurred on the Hathersage Road between the Dore Moor and Fern Glen Farm, as a result of which 3 young people lost their lives. David Tomlinson aged about 23 of Baslow Road, Totley, but previously of Causeway head Road, Dore, shot and killed Phillip Tranfield, a taxi driver of Carterknowle Road, Sheffield, and Grace Fowler aged 18 from Doncaster. At the time she was employed at Fairthom Convalescent. David then shot himself. It was good to see Councillor Sylvia Dunckleyat our AGM on 29th March. She is on the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority Committee. We get funding from them. Together, her and our Treasurer, John Savoumin, have been putting our case and things are looking good. Many thanks to them both. Alan and Barry are back and we have another driver due to join us. This is just as well, because holidays, Grandparent duties, etc., are coming up as well as clubs wanting to go out and about. We need drivers and escorts even more. By the way, I must emphasise that we don't just cover the S 17 area. We go to many other parts of Sheffield and I am sure that many of you will have seen us around. The outing to Bridlington is on Monday 12th July. Anyone is welcome to come. The Dore Football Committee.
